Mama's girl Katherine loosens the apron strings
Katherine Heigl's close relationship with her mother Nancy has frightened off boyfriends in the past, she has revealed.

But the American actress said her new husband singer Josh Kelley was the exception.

She said: "He is really great and it's funny because I've had other relationships where I felt like there was a bit of competition between the boyfriend and my mother, where he wanted me to be more focused on him than anyone else.

"Obviously my mum is a big part of my life but Josh right from the start was so wonderful with my family."

The 27 Dresses star also revealed how she wasn't sure if her husband liked her when they were first dating because he was playing it cool.

She said: "I like to play it cool myself and I was disconcerted about the whole thing.

"It threw me off as I wasn't sure if he felt as strongly about me as I did about him and I didn't want to be the sap.

"It was a good year and a half into the relationship before Josh started letting his goofy side show and not being quite so put together."

The loved up actress revealed how her husband had written a song for her.

"It is hugely romantic," she said. "There is nothing that even comes close to me for that.

"I was so blown away. It was really amazing to listen to his newest album and realise that so much of it was influenced by us and our relationship.

"I listen to it constantly."

Heigl's first taste of fame came as a nine-year-old when she was snapped up by a modelling agency.

Television roles soon followed, her most high profile being her Emmy award-winning performance as Dr Isobel Stevens on Grey's Anatomy.

She has since moved onto the big screen making her name in hit film Knocked Up and new movie 27 Dresses.

As her career takes off, Heigl said she was being more careful about the projects she chose.

She said: "I certainly make decisions now from a different place.

"Everything takes more thought and care but I also feel like I've got to follow my instincts.

"If I read a script and I love it and I love the characters I'm going to want to do it versus trying to figure out the exact project for me to catapult me further," she said on Channel 4's Richard and Judy.
