'Fame' star grateful to her Grandma, Sylvia La Torre

LOS ANGELES—For Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, one of the rewards of having Sylvia La Torre as a grandmother is that she learned such songs as “Bahay Kubo” and “Sa Kabukiran” from no less than the iconic entertainer herself.
Anna, who appears in the “re-imagining” of the 1980 musical film, “Fame,” is grateful that her first voice lessons were with Sylvia, even if sometimes they had to do it on the phone. For a time, Anna and her parents, Artie Perez (Sylvia’s son) and Evelyn, and two older brothers, Juan Miguel and Antonio, lived in Northern California, while Sylvia was based in Southern California.
In our interview over late lunch, Anna recalled, “When my grandmother visited us, she would play the piano and say, ‘Sing this note.’ She was my babysitter. It was fun. She told me stories of her early days in show business.” ... Read More ...

Vanessa Hudgens sat down with Newsweek earlier last month to answer a few quick questions about Bandslam, paparazzi and having those necessary girl-only nights with pals. Check out what the 20-year-old actress had to say:
On paparazzi: "Paparazzi are a nuisance because it doesn't have anything to do with your actual job, which for me is acting and movies. Instead, they take interest in me filling up my tank at the gas station and random things. I think it¡¯s unnecessary but it's something that comes with the territory."
On her fans that followed her from High School Musical: "It's amazing. I've never had that obsession over anything where I started crying [at the sight]. But it's incredible. They are the best fans."
On keeping close to her friends: "We all have such hectic schedules that we'll go from not seeing each other for months and when we do meet up again, we pick right back up where we started. I think it's nice to have real friends like that. Girly nights are always fun -- consisting of staying in, watching movies and grubbing out."
Vanessa Hudgens looks to be in really good spirits as she prepares to catch a departing flight to Vancouver at LAX airport in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday (September 27).
The 20-year-old actress is headed back to Canada to shoot her new action flick, Sucker Punch. She was spotted arriving at Vancouver Airport on Monday (September 28).
In a recent interview, Miss Hudgens admitted that being a part of the uber-successful Disney musical franchise has turned her into a spontaneous singer wherever she is.
"I hope people don't expect that I always break out into song mid-conversation -- but I normally do anyway. When people hear someone singing and they look to see who it is -- it is usually me. I can¡¯t help it -- that's what being in musical movies does to you."
