Ok so this tut is for GIMP. Idk how to translate so this is for only GIMP users I guess. :P
We'll be going from this (http://sixpop.com/files/191/94.jpg) to this:

1. Open the base image. The original dimensions are 800x536, and I decided to crop a bit off the top because I don't like banners that are tall.

2. Next I scaled the image because obviously we don't want a banner that's 800x472. ;) So I went to Image > Scale Image and scaled it to 450x266.
Then I decided that it was still a bit too tall so I cropped some more off the bottom making it 450x249.

3. Once I had the size and shape done, I sharpened up the image by going to Filters > Enhance > Unsharp Mask and used the default settings:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut4-3.png
4. Next I performed my obligatory Channel Mixer coloring by going to Colors > Components > Channel Mixer and entering the following settings (which I have memorized because I have used them so often...)

5. After that I went to Colors > Brightness - Contrast and raised the contrast to 30.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut9-2.png
6. Next I went to Colors > Levels and raised the Output Levels to 35.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut10.png
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut11-1.png
7. Next I went to File > Open As Layers and opened this (http://sixpop.com/files/191/black-hard-cover.jpg) texture.
I set the texture to Screen at 100% Opacity.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut12.png
8. After that I went to File > Open As Layers again and this time opened this (http://sixpop.com/files/191/37-5_crazykira.jpg) texture.
I moved it around so the colored parts weren't really showing, then I set it to Multiply at 100% Opacity.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut13.png
9. Once I was satisfied with the coloring, I felt like it needed something more, so I decided to add some text.
I used the text tool to type "HAYLEY" in Sans, size 148 and made it white. I moved it to the bottom of the banner, where some of it was cut off.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut14.png
10. After that I thought that the text stood out far too much, so I set it to Overlay at 100% Opacity.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut15.png
11. Finally, I wanted to make it so the text still popped a little, so I decided to add a drop shadow.
I went to Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow and put in the following settings.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/Livestrong368/tut17.png
And there you have it! I'd love to see your results. You don't have to use a Hayley pic;it could be anyone. :)
