1. Start off with a base, sharpen it if you need to. (I sharpened mine)
2. Create new color fill layer: color #ffffff, set it to soft light at 49% opacity.
3. Create new color fill layer: color #b9f4b1, set it to darken.
4. Create new selective color layer:
REDS -50, +23, +42, 0
YELLOWS 0, 0, -36, 0
WHITES +15, +66, -15, -23
NEUTRALS +19, +14, +9, +2
BLACKS 0, 0, 0, -17
5. Create new color balance layer:
MIDTONES -9, +5, +7
SHADOWS +9, -3, -9
HIGHLIGHTS 0, 0, 0
6. Create new brightness/contrast layer:
BRIGHTNESS -9
CONTRAST +7
7. Create new photo filter layer, warming filter (85)
-----
8. You are done unless you want the second avatar (which makes the avatar darker): Create new color fill layer: color #d0d7e1, set it to color burn (lower the opacity if it is too dark or skip this step)
//If you need to see the avatar after a specific step please feel free to ask or if you need me to clarify a step.

Very nice. Yea if the skin is very pale it's better to lower the opacity of the second color fill layer.
^Nice!

Time a selective coloring tutorial... (;
Only two steps. It seemed to work with this photo.
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/smileysrock/tutorial2.jpg
1. Make a new selective color layer:
REDS -70, +22, +80, 0
YELLOWS 95, +38, -30, 0
WHITES +100, +10, +23, -21
NEUTRALS +30, -16, -31, +8
BLACKS 0, 0, 0, +6
2. Make a new selective color layer:
REDS -58, +27, +57, 0
YELLOWS +77, 0, +100, 0
CYANS +100, 0, -100, 0
WHITES +100, +25, +12, +14
NEUTRALS +6, +25, +22, -9
BLACKS 0, 0, 0, -18
don't forget to change it according to the picture you are coloring. (;

If you wanted a tutorial to specific type of coloring or of a coloring to a certain picture,
just let me know or give me the picture and I will do something with it.
if anyone wants to know how to do something in photoshop then ask,
though i'm not really too knowledgeable in photoshop but i will try to help.

sorry forgot.... :S
here's a tutorial with just color fill layers!
yes i just kept adding them and subtracting then divided a few.
I will definitely make more w/o selective coloring!
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/smileysrock/564-2.jpg
1. layer>new fill layer>solid color, color #230101, set it to Exclusion 100%
2. layer>new fill layer>solid color, color #080229, set it to Exclusion 100%
3. layer>new fill layer>solid color, color #abebf9, set it to Darken 100%
4. layer>new fill layer>solid color, color #abf9b4, set it to Exclusion 24% opacity, 76% fill
5. layer>new>layer, use a white softbrush (#ffffff) and color where your main person or object is and then fill in the rest with a black softbrush (#000000). my layer looks like this (http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/smileysrock/ex.jpg). set it to soft light 43% opacity.
-----------
check back later today and i will post psds to photos like this one (http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/smileysrock/oliviawildecoloring2.jpg).
there will be 10 avatars in one .zip file available for download!
EDIT: I lied. dang computer ate them all. wellup. i will post psd tutorials soon anyway.

^Thanks.
I don't know if I have exclusion, so we'll see how this goes...
Kaitlin
06-18-2009, 07:52 AM
ha... if you don't that would suck saying as all of them except one has that setting. :P
But if you don't I will still make more tutorials.
I'll just remember no exclusion.
if you have the setting difference though it's almost the same, you'd just have to change the colors a bit.

I messed up on the brushes..
Kaitlin
06-21-2009, 08:59 PM
hmmm... maybe you don't even need the brushes.
but it looks good to me!
did you set the hardness of the brush to 0%? and you should probably use a bigger brush too. probably a 100+ px.

06-22-2009, 12:32 PM
^Um, idk. I think the opacity was 100%. Well, if I did 100 it would be the size of the graphic. lol. I just did what you said and put it over their faces... Was I not supposed to do that??
Kaitlin
06-22-2009, 07:40 PM
Well yes but if the brush hardness was not set to 0% then it technically wouldn't be a soft brush and if you went outside their faces it would look weird. :P
But to be honest I don't see anything wrong with your result I was just wondering what you did because it sounded like you didn't like it. :S
Haha, well I will probably make a better tutorial today anyway. :D

hmmm... if you want to make stuff with that tutorial you can download the 30 day trial of photoshop.
haha, i'll make more without all the fancy features photoshop has,
so i guess i can try to do a one like that.
just let me know the main features you can use...
and what can you set your layers to?
meanlilbrooks
06-30-2009, 11:08 PM
for coloring i can do color balance, hue saturation, colorize, brightness/contrast, levels, and curves.
and i can set my layers to dissolve, multiply, divide, screen, overlay, dodge, burn, hardlight, softlight, grain extract, grain merge, difference, addition, subtract, darken only, lighten only.
i have photoshop elements 6 but it doesn't have the selective coloring either..
Kaitlin
06-30-2009, 11:10 PM
mmm, okay. i'll just mess around and see what i can do!
i'm sure i can do a lot with color balance. :P
