IF you want to see Miley Cyrus lose her smile - don't bother making jibes about her singing or that infamous revealing photo shoot.
The worst thing you can do to this hoedown-to-earth girl is ban her from using fake tan and take away her make-up bag.
The Hannah Montana star is one of the world's most powerful teenagers, thanks to her Hannah Montana TV show, which has blossomed into a movie.
In the film, Miley Stewart's growing ego over the rising popularity of her secret pop-star persona Hannah Montana makes her spoilt rotten. To teach her a lesson, her dad sends her home to a small town.
And British director Peter Chelsom insisted on a similar back-to- basics treatment for Miley, by refusing to let her glam up on screen. He even banned two of her big addictions - mascara and fake tan.
The 52-year-old Serendipity and Funny Bones director had never heard of Miley when he took the job. He was determined to turn her into a natural beauty - and refused to let ler layer on her favourite black lashes or powder her face between takes.
Miley said: "Peter wouldn't allow the make-up girl to give me touch-ups when I was sweating, and he wouldn't even allow me my mascara. I said, 'I like my spray tan and I want my hair extensions.'
But he said that I couldn't wear make-up and that my hair should be messy." When Miley came to the set groomed to superstar perfection for her scenes, the director bluntly told her: "You look like a Christmas tree." And he would make her roll in the mudbefore filming.
But Peter ended up admiring his young star's professionalism.
"She's level-headed, unpretentious, works hard," he says. "She really wants to please, really wants to do every scene as well as she can." Miley stunned viewers last week with her motor-mouthed performance on Jonathan Ross, but it was real Miley, not anact.
Off-camera she's just as quick-witted and confident.
Miley's precocity can be freaky, what with her enormous self- possession and the husky speaking voice of a 40-year-old Tennessee barmaid.
Industry sources estimate that this young woman and the brand she represents is worth $1 billion to Disney for her TV, recording and movie work.
It's all happened in a few years. Miley is 16 but her movie, like her show, is aimed at girls who are much younger.
And she's now at that awkward age, where she's part kid and part adult.
Her biggest ambition now that she's in the UK is to visit Topshop. The God-fearing star has said she wants to save herself for marriage, carries the Bible in her bag and when asked what three items she couldn't live without, she replied: "My Blackberry,my Bible, and my guitar." But just in case she sounds like a goody- goody role model, she also admits she loathes having to eat up her vegetables. "I don't eat veg," she cries.
"They look funny and they're green." She's one of the biggest celebrities of her generation but like any teenager in the limelight she feels pressured about her looks and weight.
Miley admits to feeling insecure about her appearance, but when doctors discovered she had a hole in her heart, she chose to stay healthy, even if that meant being a few pounds heavier than other rising stars.
"I've struggled with my weight, but when I found out I had a hole in my heart, there was no way in heck being skinny was worth sacrificing my health," she explains. "Like lots of girls my age, I can be self-conscious about my looks, but it was clear tome that I'd much rather be healthy and normal sized.
"I wish I could show every kid that looks in the mirror and says, 'I'm not beautiful,' what it takes to look like that in a magazine. They would feel so much better because it takes an hour and a half before you even arrive.
They're working on the lighting. They have your stand-in. It's not real." Miley knows she can't be Hannah forever but her wholesome image has already been rocked by a sexed-up photo shoot for Vanity Fair magazine in which she posed half-clothed.
"It's scary - all of a sudden you're not 4ft 9 any more," she says of the fuss.
"But there's a difference between growing up fast and not growing up at all. I would say I've grown up quickly." She certainly has, and this summer she intends to show a more adult side with another movie,The Last Song, written by The Notebook and HorseWhisper author Nicholas Sparks. Miley hopes the film will help her discover whether she's "a good actress or not, or if I'm just good at playing myself".
For the last five years, she's become a global star playing the ballad-loving, guitar-strumming version of her that is Hannah Montana. Aged 13, she had attended her first Oscars ceremony. At 15, she was heartbroken when her two-year relationship withJonas boy band member Nick Jonas, 16, ended.
Lately she's found new love with 20-year-old underwear model Justin Gaston. The age gap has raised eyebrows.
"I've dealt with relationships with people my age," she says defensively.
"They can be harsh and judgmental.
"I'm finally happy again, and I think that is reflected in my music and my work. I don't feel like there's anything to hide. And I love him so much I don't really care." And she admits that she never asks her singer dad Billy Ray Cyrus for advice onboyfriends and bust- ups, because he is rarely sympathetic about it.
"Dad just doesn't get it. He did once actually say, 'Suck it up and get over it. You'll find another one.
There's more fish in the sea and he wasn't that good-looking anyway.' He's a harsh man to my boyfriends.
He's usually cool with them when they're with me but once they dump me or I dump them, then he's always down for bashing them," she grins.
Does she ever find herself comparing record sales with her 47- year-old father? He co-stars in her TV show but has his own recording career, dating back to before his daughter was born. Miley's brother Trace is also in the band Metro Station.
"There's no rivalry because I can never win," states the Disney star. "No one buys CDs any more. I do joke with my dad and call him fat, but my dad knows he's cool and really sweet."
Billy - complete with mullet - became an international star in the 1990s with his cheesy signature song Achy Breaky Heart. Miley giggles: "I wouldn't have been able to eat if it wasn't a hit. So I personally think it's a GREAT song."
And what does the future hold for Miley? The star isn't hanging up her blonde wig just yet but she already has her sights set on another goal - giving Victoria Beckham sleepless nights.
"In 10 years, I'd like to be a soccer mom, like Posh Spice," she admits.
" I'll be there inmy heels cheering on my kids. ' Go, team, go.' But I'll have no idea what's going on."
