It always makes me feel empty inside.
Technically, it is the end of the Mayan calendar.
I don't know if they meant of their civilization because they believed the wouldn't last as long,

I do not think the world is going to end, just change. Somethings going to happen that's big. I'm not saying I know for 100%, but I feel somethings going to happen. Either a natural disaster, or craziness will break out and well idk. My opinion is we should all be prepared for whatever might be thrown are way, even if you do believe the worlds going to end when jesus comes back, because you'd feel very silly if something did happen. All i know is im gonna be prepared, if nothing happens then we can all continue on with our happy lives.

So a few things I want to address here:

First, the world will not end if/when Jesus returns. If he was such an amazing person, why would he end the world when he comes back?
According to the bible, Jesus was supposed to return within the disciples lifetime. And when the world ended only 144,000 people were going to be saved. If you're interpreting the bible literally, that's apparently what will happen. If you believe in God, you'll go to heaven. And if you don't, then you'll go to hell. I find if hard to believe that a "loving" God would only save certain people.
But enough of that.

Second, scientifically speaking, it's impossible for the world to end in 3 years. There have been so many theories that the world us going to end on so and so day, just because of the numbers. It was supposed to end 1/1/00, and then 6/6/06. Neither happened. So I don't believe that it's going to happen 12/21/12 either.

Third, there's no doubt that the world is in a bit of a dire state right now. The war, the economic crisis, global warming and all the envirinmental changes, and just a general state of unhappiness around the world. So maybe it is time for SOMETHING to happen. Sometimes if takes a disaster or something that gives us all a wake up call to unite people. So maybe that's what will happen that day, I don't know.

Nobody knows when the world will end.
For those of us that don't believe in God, maybe we are going to hell, or maybe nothing will happen and we'll just be gone.
I don't know what people really define as the end of the world anyhow, is it when life as we know it ends? Is it when people evolve backwards and can no longer stand to be around each other? Is it when it's no longer possible to live on the earth? Who knows.

there was an experiment going on in like india last october or something that if the experiement went how it was supposed to, the world would have ended. but the experiment didn't work.

The whole thing is actually more legitimate than most people give it credit for. It wasn't just one psycho who predicted something to happen on 12/21/2012, but it was several. The Mayans, Nostradamus, and Einstein all predicted that something major will happen on the date. On that date, the sun and the milky way will be aligned for the first time in tens of thousands of years.

I do believe it's been blown out of proportion, that's for sure. I really don't think the world will literally end, but rather something major will happen. I'm personally a believer in the pole-change theory. Rather, that the north pole will become the south pole and vice-versa. Some believe this will cause complete catastrophe and cause radioactive material to enter our Earth and kill us, others believe it may only disable electronics - which could also cause a disaster in my opinion since virtually our entire world is run on electronics. From street-lights to factories, to everything. Life would change drastically.

Frankly, I'm no expert and I don't know what I believe. I just know that SOMETHING, no matter how small or how large, will definitely happen that day.

They based their timeline mostly on astronomy, for example, the cycles of the sun and moon, and the positions of the stars in the sky. The calendar combines twenty day names with the thirteen numbers of the trecena (the 13 day period common in most Meso-American calendars) cycle to produce 260 unique days. It is used to determine the time of religious and ceremonial events and for divination(predicting things). Each successive day is numbered from 1 up to 13 and then starting again at 1. Separately from this, each day is given a name in sequence from a list of 20 day names.

These combinations form unique places in time, known as the B'ak'tun cycle. (If you wish for me to elaborate on that just ask, but for now, I'm growing tired of typing) in which a sage, would predict the events of that time period. These repeat, successively, and has led to a profound number of startling... Shall we say, coincidences. Lets just say the Mayans are batting 1.000 so far. (baseball joke)

This I heard while watching "The Universe" on the History channel, which, has led me through some sketchy information in the past, but it seems to check out, although I can't seem to find anything about it online.

One, predictions are always extremely vague, leaving them wide open to interpretation. One man may believe what was predicted never happened, another can find several events that pertain to that particular prediction.

Two, this wasn't a prediction, its the interpretation of why the Mayan calendar ends on this date.

Can you please explain to me why Jesus would rise from the dead if the world ends? I'm not a believer but I'm genuinely curious.

because the whole alignment actually makes sense. I'm a huge believer in evolution. I do not believe some spirit, hence god, placed us all here and will make his son rise when the world ends.

Seems like everything turns into a fight about religion these days...
Personally I don't believe in God. But that's just my opinion. I don't believe that the bible is the absolute truth and whatnot, but I think that some bits and pieces of it do teach good morals.
Some of us think that God is going to end the world, some of us don't. Let's try not to force our beliefs on anyone else.
Just because you think that God is going to end the world, or just because you don't, doesn't mean that you're right or wrong.

Im not sure. But im scared as to what people will do the day before. What if they freak out? set things on fire cuz its "gonna end anyway" and people get killed because of how Insane they are going thinking it will end then it DOESNT?

It all has to do with the calender they made. Saying it only goes up to 12/21/12. Thats ALOT to make. I personally think they got lazy and decided to stop there. Too lazy to add more...IMO...

so i believe that the world will never end, but be made into a new world. like, a heaven on earth for real. uhh i dont think that Jesus will come again on that day, but then again no one knows except God, so who am i to say?

If that day were off in the future we'd attribute it to them giving up because it's useless to go any further. We'd been doing that for years. But now that the date is close people want to make something of it. No matter how irrational or idiotic it may be.

That hasn't happened.
My mom told me that when she was younger, people would get
freaked out thinking that the world was going to end twenty years ago.

They were probably scientists and a whole bunch of other people gathering data, proving that the world is diieing because of global warming, and are
predicting that the end of the world will be in 2012.
