I don't enjoy these threads but I do think it's important for people to be remembered. Majel Barrett-Roddenberry died at the age of 76. She was the widow of the creator of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry. They had a son Eugene.
Majel was in the first Star Trek pilot The Cage. She played Number One, the original first officer of the Enterprise. In Gene Roddenberry's original version of Star Trek he wanted the first officer to be a woman. That was a very progessive idea for the 60's. NBC wouldn't let him do this so Spock became the first officer in the series. Majel did play nurse Chapel in the first Star Trek series.
Majel went on to play the voice of the computer in Star Trek The Next generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. She also played Deanna Troi's loopy mother Laxwana Troi in the Star Trek spin offs. She also did voice work in the Star Trek animated series. She appeared in some of the Star Trek films. She also did the voice of the Enterprise computer for the upcoming Star Trek film.
For those of us who watched Star Trek and it's various versions growing up this is very sad. She was a big part of the franchise for many years. She was a connection to the pilot. She was a part of Star Trek since day one. Majel did make up tests for the green Orion girl in the Star Trek pilot.
It's sad to think that she won't be here to see the release of the new movie although she did voice work in it and probably was able to see parts of the film. I believe it's mostly finished. (It was supposed to come out this month but the studio pushed it back to summer.)
