From the front porch of her new home, Ashleigh Griffen looked out to the rolling
pastures and white-fenced paddock's of Townsend Acres. It seemed so strange to be
here and know that this was where they would be living from now on.
The last few months had been the most horredous in Ashleigh's twelve years of living.
A virus had swept through her old home, Edgardale, and killed more than half of her
parents broodmares and their foals. Their insurance didn't cover the losses, and they
had to leave. Ashleigh was crying just thinking about it. The worst part was, none of the
horses here belonged to Ashleigh. They belonged to Clay Towsend, the owner of Townsend Acres.
"Ready to go on tour?" Mrs. Griffen asked Asleigh. "Go get your brother and sister."
Ashleigh went to the front hall and called to her seven-year-old brother, Rory, and
her fifteen-year-old sister, Caroline. They headed outside for the tour. Rory, as always,
was VERY hyper. Caroline was not a horse person. As much as she loved them, she'd
rather go to the mall than muck out stalls. The barn was filled with the scent of horses.
Ashleigh sighed. She remember her horse, Stardust. Stardust belonged to someone
else now. The though brough fresh tears to Ashleigh's eyes.
"It's not fair." Ashleigh hit the barn door with her fists.

After the tour, Ashleigh walked back to the barn. She went straight toward a mare
who had her head hanging out of her stall.
"Townsend Holly," Ashleigh read from the name plate on the stall.
"Yep, Holly is one of the sweetest mares on the farm. She's also one of the best
broodmares. Just right now she's due any day," a voice said from behind.
Sure enough, the mare was pregant.
"She must be a very special horse," Ashleigh said. The groom smiled.
"You must be the breeding manager's daughter, Ashleigh." Ashleigh nodded.
"Your a groom?"
"I'm Dana, and I am in charge of Holly." Ashleigh back away.
"I'll leave you alone."
"No it's okay, you can stay."
Ashleigh spent the next 2 hours with Dana and Holly. School started in 1 hour and she had to get ready.
Maybe this wasn't going to be a bad place at all.
