sonny monroe has been best friends with the lucas family as long as she could remember. she's grown up with nick as her best friend, joe and kevin as her older brothers, and little frankie as the little annoying prick in her side that she loved.
her two best friends, alex russo and miley stewart were always there for her.
her life seemed basically perfect.
until she hit highschool.

It was the first day of High School.
And, boy, was I nervous.
Do you know what it's like to be a freshmeat?
Er-Freshman.
At least I had my two best friends by my sides.
Alex and Miley were the only ones I could totally trust to help me through this agonizing year of being a little fish, while everyone else was a shark.

The sound of high heels stomping on wood rang out through the halls.
I turned and saw something so mesmerizing, so perfect.
I hated them.
Cheerleaders.
"Can you believe them, they think they own the school. They're freshman, like us. It's disgusting." Alex groaned.
"I so agree." Miley smiled.
She was lying.
Miley was THE best cheerleader at our junior high.
She wanted to be them.

"Miley, shut up. You basically are them." I smirked.
Miley gaped at me.
"Lies. I'd never become one of them. Even though, I'd so kick their butts at a cheer off."
Alex and I laughed.
"We know you would."

The first day of high school was OVER.
I put my books in my locker, and slammed the door.
I stood up from my crouched position--bottom locker--and started to walked towards Alex and Miley.
"Are you glad it's over?" I questioned.
"It's not over for me." They said in unison.
"What? Why?"
"Cheer tryouts." Miley said, plainly, as Alex mumbled, "Detention."
I laughed. "Alex, what did you do?"
"My cell went off in class."
"Who was it?"
She groaned.
"Your brother."
Just as she said it, Dylan came up behind us.
"Heyy-lo, beautiful." He cooed at Alex.
I stiffled a laugh.
"Go, Dylan." Alex pointed down the hallway.
He shrugged and did as she said.
Alex glared at me.
Miley and I laughed.
"You like him, Alex."
"I DO NOT."
Miley shrugged.
"Alright. Oh, I'm late, bye guys!"
She took off running down the empty corridor.
"I'll come by your house later." Alex said softly, before making her way to detention.
I sighed.
All alone...
"Hey." I turned.
"Oh, hey Nick."
He smiled.
"Want to walk home?"
I nodded, "Sure."
Hmm, maybe this day wasn't so bad after all.

"So, how's the band coming?" I asked Nick, adjusting my backpack on my shoulders.
"Good, you should come by and hear us play sometime."
"Okay, I can't today, though."
"Yeah, Same here. I'm busy."
I nodded.
"Um. So, how was your first day? I noticed we don't have alot of classes together. Just study hall."
"Yeah, thats sucks...No, but my day was good. Feels kind of weird since last year we were like..the top dogs. And now we're.."
"Little fishies?"
He laughed. "Yeah."
I smiled. We didn't talk for a while.
It was kind of nice, the silence.
We were just enjoying eachotehrs company.
"Hey....HEY! SONNY!"
I turned and saw Alex racing towards us.
"Alex? I thought you were in detention."
She stopped right behind us, and placed her hands on her thighs and breathed heavily.
"We-We've got...a problem."
"What?"
Alex looks up and saw Nick standing there.
"Oh hey, Lucas."
"Russo."
I rolled my eyes at their last name basis-ness.
"Miley..got out of cheer early...cause her dad texted her."
I nodded, waiting for her to continue.
"They're watching a movie tonight."
"Yeah...and?"
"So she was leaving...and they're was kind of a problem."
"Wh-?" Alex pulled me and whispered in my ear.
"Oh."
Alex nodded.
"Nick, I'm sorry, I've got to go."
"Okay.."
"Bye!" Alex grabbed my arm and started running towards the beach.

I might as well explain to you what the heck just happend.
Miley has a...secret identity.
She's actually Hannah Montana.
With the help of a blonde wig.
So, when her dad said they we're 'going to a movie' it meant, they had a Hannah premiere tonight.
And, when Miley was about to leave, paparazzi was swarming her house.
So right now, Miley's hiding in a bush behind her house while Robbie Ray and her brother, Jackson, round up the pap's and convince them Hannah Montana DOES NOT live in her house.

I saw Miley's house comming up on the shore.
Alex pulled me towards the back and then started whisper-calling to Miley.
"Miiiiiiiley. Pssst. Miiiiiley. HEY. POPSTAR."
A hand reached out from a bush and grabbed Alex's shirt.
"Shut up."
Miley pulled us into the bush with her.
"Guys, I dont know what to do. They wont leave."
I looked at Alex.
"We'll help."
I stepped out of the bush and pulled Alex with me.
"HEY!" I yelled, gaining some attention from the paparazzi.
"HEYYYY!" Alex screamed, all of them looked at us.
"I JUST SAW HANNAH MONTANA. SHE WENT INTO THE HOUSE THREE DOORS DOWN FROM HERE."
The paparazzi left like a heard of elephants, leaving the front of the Stewart house completely empty.
"I don't know what I'd do, if Miley didn't have you too."
Mr. Stewart gathered us in a hug.
Miley slow climbed out of the bush.
I laughed. "Nice hair, Hannah."
Miley grimaced.
"I'll be back."
She walked into the house.
Then she came back.
"Hey do you guys..would you guys want to go to the premiere?"
I looked wide eyed at Alex.
She smiled.
"YES!"
I giggled.
"Do we have to wear wigs?"
"Unless you want to be known as Hannah Montana's best friends at school..."
"Wigs it is."
We raced into Miley's house, climbing the stairs two at a time to her closet.

As I sat on the stairs of Miley's Hannah closet, I felt something vibrate in my pocket.
I pulled out my cellphone and saw I had one new text message.

To: Sonny
From: Nick
Message: I'm not busy any more, want 2 come see us play? Just U, not M or A.

I looked up and saw Miley and Alex trying to find something for Alex to wear.
I sighed.

To: Nick
From: Sonny
Message: I'm sorry, I can't. I'm going to the movies with M & A. Maybe tmrw?

I felt bad. Everytime Nick wanted to hang out, I had something to do with Hannah.
He was my best friend, I needed to make time for him...

Worst movie I've ever seen.
I don't even know what it is.
I leaned over to Miley.
"I need to pee, I'll be back." She nodded, and I stood up.
Many people groaned behind me.
"Oh, deal with it." I hissed at them.
I slowly exited the theatre, heading down the hall to the bathroom.
I pulled out my phone.

From: Sonny
Message: I'm ditching, see you at school tmrw.

I closed the phone.
I looked in the mirror and grimaced at my reflection.
The red/orange wig on my head was hidious.
Its curls weren't even close the to the natural-ness of mine.
I pulled it off my head and undid the wrap holding my hair.
I let it fall loose and I shook it, so it would be slightly possible to regain its normal bouncy-ness.

I pulled out my phone once more, an idea popping into my head.

From: Sonny
Message: Only 7:30, can I still come over?

I waited impatiently for a responce.

From: Nick
Message: Yeah, wut about M & A?

Message: Ditched 'em. Pick me up?

I hesitated.
Where?
I couldn't be picked up here.
I raced out of the bathroom and into the empty lobby.
I saw an employee and walked up to him, my breath unsteady.
"Where's the nearest Pinkberry?"
He looke dup from his sweeping.
"Two blocks down."
"Thanks." I mumbled.
I hurried out of the fancy building and stood outside for just a minute.

Message: Pinkberry, on Main.

To: Sonny
From: Nick
Message: Far much? I'll be there in 20.

20 minutes.
Enough time for me to...unpretty myself a little, and actually walk to Pinkberry.

I started walking down the road.
I hesitantly pushed the wig into my bag, and rummaged around for a mirror.
I looked at myself in the compact and roughly swiped my eyes.
The purple eyeshadow smeared a little, but I wet my thumb and rubbed it off.
I wiped the lipgloss of my lips, and the base off my face.
I looked presentable.
But my clothes.
Oh god, my clothes.

I'd have to think of something.
I saw the lights of Pinkberry as I turned the corner.
I looked at my phone.
I'd been walking 15 minutes.
Oh, I needed an excuse.
I could say I went the the premiere with Hannah Montana.
I could say that she was my best friend.
I could say that SHE WAS MILEY.
But no.
I had to lie.
I sighed.
Only 2 minutes until Nick would be here...
Hrmp.
Miley, Alex and I like to go to the Uptown movie theatre, and we dress up.
To fit in.
That'll have to work.

I saw the familar car drive into the parking lot.
Joe was driving--Shocking, I know--And Nick was sitting in the back seat, obviously waiting for me.

"Heyhey, Monroe." Joe smiled.
"Don't call me that."
I hated last name basis', as you may have noticed.
"Party pooper."
I climbed into the backseat, and rolled my eyes.
"Ignore him." Nick smiled.
"Lets just rock."
He laughed.
Joe sped out of the parking lot, and down the road.
Wow, what a fun ride this'll be.

It was the second day back to high school.
Last night...was pretty much the only thing I could think about.
Not only did I spend basically all my time with Nick, but I finally got to listen and enjoy his music.
Which...is AMAZING, I gotta tell you.

So, I was lazily piling books into my locker, trying to keep my eyes open.
I couldn't sleep last night; Adreniline pumped through my veins.
I was sure the bell had already rung, but I didn't hear it.
"Sonny, Sonny, SONNY."
I looked up and saw NIck running towards me.
I sttood up, just as he wrapped his arms arouns me and lifted me off the ground.
"What in the world?!" I yelled, smiling.
"WE. GOT. A. GIG."
My eyes went wide.
"HOLYSHIZ. NO.WAY."
"YES WAY."
He danced around the empty hallway, hold me tightly.
"You can put me down now."
He blushed.
"Sorry, I'm just so PUMPED. We got a call last night after you left from Conner Lewis and-"
"CONNER LEWIS CALLED YOU?!"
"YES. And anyways-"
"OHMIGAWD, I LOVE MORE THAN ENOUGH."

I saw Miley walking down the hallway.

I stared in awe.

I noticed Miley was wearing her cheer uniform.

I noticed a little more flair to her outfit than I'd seen on the cheerleaders yesterday at out 'Welcoming' Pep ralley.

I knew it!
Wait so that meant...

I'm so confused.

"Sonny, come on! Pick up the pace! You've got customers!"
Working at the Waverly Sub Station wasn't the best job in the world.
Sure, I got to hang out with Alex more, but it was still a pain.
"Son, you've got table 33. And I warn you-" Alex grabbed my arm.
"No need. Nothing can make my day worse."
She shrugged and walked away with her tray of food.
I picked up my notepad and a pen and slowly turned aroundm groaning as I saw my table.
Nick and Miley.
I rolled my eyes and walked up to them anyways.
"Hi, Welcome to Waverly Sub Station, I'm Sonny, I'll be your waitress today, is there anything I can get you?"
Nick laughed. "Hellllo. Sonny. It's us."
"I know. I'm required to say that. Now, what can I get you to drink?"
"Whoaaa. Slow your horse. We're here like everyday, and you've never once asked for what I want to drink. Since when do we get treated like customers?"
Since you ripped my heart in half and I'm just trying to get this over with.
I stared at Miley. "Diet coke, and Mellow Yellow, coming right up."
I turned on my heel, heading to the soda fountain.
I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"What's your damage, Sonny?"
Nick.
"Why did you kiss her?"
"I-Excuse me?"
"This morning, you kissed her. Why?"
"Cause she's my girlfriend."

It was like slow motion, the glass of Diet Coke slipped from my finger tips, crashing to the ground.
Nick jumped back, trying not to step on the shattered glass.
"What the heck, Sonny?"

Mr. Russo came out from the kitchen.
"What happend?"
I stood there.
"Sorry, Mr. Russo, I'll clean it up."
Nick just stared at me.
"Sonny. What's wrong...?"
Alex ran over.
"Just leave her alone, Lucas."
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I picked up the shattered glass.
I didn't even use a broom, I just picked them up with my bare hands, the pieces cutting into my palms.
I cleaned up the mess and then rain up the stairs to Alex's house.
She followed behind.
"What did he do?"
"He's dating Miley."
"WHAT THE F-"
"I hate her. And I hate Hannah Montana and...DANGIT." Blood was pouring from my hands. "Gah."

An hour later, the blood had stopped and my hands were bandaged.
"Now tell me what happend."
I began my story.
"So, last night, I left during the movie and I texted Nick and was all "Lets hang out." So he came and picked me up, and I went to his house, and I listened to him play, and stuff. And everything was fine. I had no idea he was dating Miley. And then this morning, he runs up to me saying how he got a gig, and stuff, and he was happy. And I was happy. And Miley came out of no where, and then he just started kissing her. And thats why I just kinda..had a sucky day. And then now..."
Alex pulled me into a hug. "I've got to get back to work. But, you can stay here, and..hang out with Justin!" Justin looked up at us.
"Mk."
Alex went back to the sub station.
"Soooo. Boy troubles?"
Justin sat on the couch next to me.
"More like, guy I like, dating my best friend. And I just kind of...threw glass at him."
Justin chuckled.
"Its not funny!!"
"Sonny, make hiim jealous."
"How? He's dating the HEAD CHEERLEADER. I can't beat that."
"Date someone older, and more attractive, and commit serious PDA while he's around."
I stared at him.
"You are so right...But where am I going to find an attractive older male?"
I looked at Justin, who was smiling.
"NO. OH COME ON."
"It's the only way."
"Justin, I'm going to murder you."
"No you won't."
"I'm not going through with this."
"Do you want him?"
"Yes."
"Then do it."
"Fine."
Justin smiled.
I groaned.
"Boyfriend."

The next day at school was…interesting.
More like, absolutely horrific.
As I walked by Nick in the hallway, I felt like everything was in slow motion.
He was walking with Miley, holding her books for her, and Miley was laughing.
Then, the world stopped spinning.
He looked over in my direction, and his expression changed.
His smile changed to a frown.
I locked eyes with him. I almost said his name, so I could apologize, but Miley pulled him along, and the world went back to normal speed.
I sighed.
I bent down at my locker and started piling my books in.
“Hey.” I looked up.
“Hey Justin.”
Standing up, I turned to him.
His kissed my cheek.
I raised my eyebrows.
“Nick’s not here, Justin.”
“Might as well make everyone else believe it, too, huh?”
“Sure.”
“Can I walk you to class?” He asked.
“Won’t you be late?”
“Nahh.” I shrugged. He took my books for first period from me, and held them.
We walked in silence to my first period.
I stopped outside the biology room.
“Thanks. OH THERES NICK.” Nick was just walking down the hallway to come to biology, same as me.
“Can I kiss you?” Justin asked.
“Yeah.” Nick was just about to walk past us when Justin leaned down and placed a kiss on my lips.
“Sonny?” I pulled back and saw Nick.
I put on a smile, “Heyyy Lucas.”
Last name basis, hated it. But dealt with it.
“Um.”
“I’ll see you at lunch, Sonny.” Justin smiled.
I waved goodbye to him, and walked into class.
Nick was right behind me.
He sat in the seat behind me, like he usually did.
Half way through class, I felt a tap on my shoulder.
Nick passed me a note.
‘Since when are you dating Alex’s brother?’
I grinned. He’s getting jealous.
I passed a note back.
‘Since when are you dating my best friend?’
I heard Nick crumple up the paper, and I smiled. It was working.

“Sonny, I totally understand the whole jealous thing, but JUSTIN? REALLY?”
“Alex, you knowwww this will work.”
“But it’s my brother! I mean, your like..dating him. That’s SO against the code of friendship, and if you kiss him…”
I was silent.
“No. YOU KISSED HIM?”
“NICK WAS THERE!”
“SO YOU KISSED HIM?”
Justin walked up to our table.
“Hey Sonny!....Sister.”
“Freak.” Alex mumbled.
Justin placed a kiss on my cheek, sitting down at our table.
Alex gagged.
“Not in front of me, please.”
I saw Nick and Miley walking around, obviously looking for a place to sit.
Miley probably wanted to sit with the cheerleaders, but they wouldn’t let Nick sit there. And Nick probably wanted to sit with is baseball friends, but they wouldn’t let Miley sit there.
So that left…us.
Nick pointed to our table.
“Alert: Nick and Miley. Time to kick it up a notch, Justin.”
“Oh, god.” Alex groaned.
