Like Mikey said, the show is in HD this season, but only a very small number of select stations are able to broadcast it that way. Like LA, NYC and a few others. The problem is that it's a syndicated show and not many local tv stations are capable of rebroadcasting a syndicated show in HD. And because it's syndicated, that's why you see this show on different networks and different times during the day. Hopefully after the digital transition early next year, they'll get this thing figured out so we can enjoy Ellen and others in HD. So when it does we'll do our best to get it like that, but for now this is the best we can do with shows like this unfortunately. Sorry :/

i hear it everywhere and dont see how a download could be diff
i thought everything appeared the same
like the way my vids appear are based on my computer or tv, etc

most broadcasts up till now, are broadcast in SD which is 720x576 resolution, and either 25 frames per second (uk), or 29.97 frames per second (US), interlaced (i).
HD resolution is either 1280x720p (or i), or 1920x1080p (or i) at upto 60 frames per second, either interlaced, or progressive (p).
interlaced is where frames 1,3,5 etc to 575 , the 2,4,6 etc to 576 are drawn, which when viewed on a pc, can cause lines to show in fast moving images.
With progessive, the whole picture is shown at once, which is one reason why true HD takes up so much disc/hard drive space.
Another reason is bitrate.
Standard dvd (better than SD) quality is around 8200Kb/s, where as true HD can be 30000Kb/s. (not including audio, which is 224Kb/s, 2 channels for SD, and 384Kb/s, 6 channels for HD
HD broadcast has upto 5 times the resolution of a SD broadcast, and double the framerate.

here's an example.
I have a file : Miley & Billy Ray Cyrus - Interview - 02.27.08 (Tonight Show With Jay Leno) which is HD, 1080i, 12 mins long and 1.4Gb file size.
The same file, at SD (or DVD) would be about 400Mb
