Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, to Sing at PI Lawyer’s Holiday Party

Posted 1 hour, 56 minutes ago
By Debra Cassens Weiss (http://www.abajournal.com/authors/4)
Yet another famous singer will perform at this year’s annual holiday party hosted by Houston personal injury lawyer Mark Lanier, and any tween guests are likely to be pleased.
Miley Cyrus—who plays Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel—will perform, the AmLaw Litigation Daily (http://amlawdaily.typepad.com/amlawdaily/2008/11/the-am-law-l-11.html) reports.
Last year Lanier gave out snow globes (http://www.abajournal.com/news/brooks_dunn_to_headline_pi_lawyers_holiday_party/) along with his invitations announcing that his musical guests would be country music stars Brooks & Dunn. This year’s invitation features a pop up image of Cyrus and promises “Texas Bar-B-Q, Fajitas and Amusements,” the Tex Parte Blog (http://texaslawyer.typepad.com/texas_lawyer_blog/2008/11/miley-cyrus-to-perform-at-lanier-holiday-shindig.html) reports.
Party guests are being asked to donate school supplies or money to buy the items for children in Guatemala.

i am imagining miley performing for a room full of stern looking business men in suits and shuffling legal documents and it is not making sense.

PI lawyers are nuts. Those are the ones with the commercials running about the most obscure, specific stuff. Think mesothelioma, but like ten times less common.

15-Minute Warning: Houston Lawyer Gets Miley Cyrus For His Christmas Party

Fri Nov 21, 2008 at 10:51:50 AM

OMG!! Guess who’s going to be at Houston lawyer Mark Lanier’s Christmas party this year – Miley Cyrus! When we heard that, we were like, 2G2BT!! Lanier’s parties, which include thousands of guests and which take place on his 25-acre ranch northwest of Houston (well, at least we’re told that’s where they take place; Hair Balls has never been invited) are always a spectacle, but previous years’ entertainers smacked more of state-fair-purgatory than stadium-sellouts. For cripe’s sake, two years ago, he invited KC & The Sunshine Band to do a little dance, make a little soup, and get down with Matlock tonight. So how does one go from has-beens to Cyrus, who broke Reliant Stadium attendance records when she performed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last March?

Well, we tried to find out from the man himself, but all anyone at Lanier’s office told us was, “Mark says ‘Not doing any PR. That’s part of the contract.’ So we are not doing any PR on this Christmas party.” (It must be in that clause of the contract which reads, Pssssst: Don’t tell anyone except for 8,000 people that Miley’s coming to Houston – pass it on!)
Fortunately, the folks at Texas Lawyer (http://texaslawyer.typepad.com/texas_lawyer_blog/2008/11/miley-cyrus-to-perform-at-lanier-holiday-shindig.html) have filled in those unlucky enough to not be invited: Guests are asked to bring school supplies – or donations – to help kids in Guatemala. (Apparently, previous Lanier parties raised enough money to cure impoverished children in the U.S.)

Lanier mega-Christmas party's mega-invitation

http://blogs.chron.com/legaltrade/SANt6.jpg

Mark Lanier's party invitation this holiday season is a fairly high quality, fully shakable snow globe. Inside it Santa, who has an "L" on his belt buckle, plays guitar in front of a Christmas tree draped with a "Lanier Law Firm" banner. See this prior entry on law firm Christmas parties (http://blogs.chron.com/legaltrade/2007/11/let_the_holiday_law_party_game_1.html#comments).
The famous Lanier party (http://www.lanierlawfirm.com/law_firm_news/God_family_pharmaceuticals.htm) for 8,000 at Lanier's ranch home might be especially cheery this year given the lawyer's major role in the $4.85 billion mega-settlement in the Vioxx litigation. (http://blogs.chron.com/legaltrade/2007/11/merck_settlement_on_vioxx.html)
In years past there have been faux Monopoly board invites and others that appeared flimsier and more flammable than this hefty snow globe.
The big name entertainment this year is Brooks and Dunn (http://www.brooks-dunn.com/site.php). Just to keep your jaw dropped, here's who this plaintiff's lawyer has had play his no-booze, family-friendly party years before:

Past party acts:
2006 KC & the Sunshine Band, Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor and other disco-era faves
2005 Dolly Parton
2004 Reba McIntire
http://blogs.chron.com/legaltrade/bandd2.jpg
2007 Brooks and Dunn

2003 Bill Cosby and Al Green
2002 Crosby Stills & Nash
2001 Barry Manilow
2000 Diana Ross
1999 Randy Travis
1998 Clint Black
1997 The Spinners
1996 America
1995 Johnny Cash
1994 America
1993 Dixie Chicks

hey, if those lawyers can get miley to perform just to themselves (and their sons/daughters). How about we get our own lawyers and arrange a secret (well, almost) concert of our own as well

Seriously, who does not want these kinds of events that you cant even get a ticket even if you have enough cash to pay?

Houston attorney’s Christmas gift to friends: Miley Cyrus

By JOEY GUERRA HOUSTON CHRONICLE

The high-wattage affair benefits Guatemala SANA, an organization started by Guatemalan vice-president Rafael Espada, a former doctor at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center and a longtime Lanier family friend.

Miley Cyrus is returning to Houston for another concert. But these tickets won’t be going for four-figure prices on Ebay.

Tweendom’s reigning queen is the star performer at the Lanier Law Firm’s “Christmas Cheers and Charity” party. The annual event will be held next month at the ranch home of Houston lawyer Mark Lanier and his wife, Becky.

The family-friendly extravaganza boasts “Texas Bar-B-Q, fajitas and amusements” on the colorful invitation, which includes a pop-up Cyrus sharing the stage with a guitar-wielding Santa and singing elves.
“We do have limited room. We’d love to be able to invite the world, but we can’t,” said Mark Lanier.
“We’re excited.”

Lucky guests (and their kids) likely are, too. The well-known attorney estimates a crowd of 7,000-8,000 for the event, which was organized by wife Becky. (No party planner needed, he says.) She starts working on invitations in January and kicks into high gear in May. From the entertainment down to the smallest details, this annual event is no ordinary Christmas party. Last year’s invite was an oversized Santa snow globe.

The high-wattage affair benefits Guatemala SANA, an organization started by Guatemalan vice-president Rafael Espada, a former doctor at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center and a longtime Lanier family friend. Espada was also a professor at Baylor College of Medicine.
Guatemala SANA battles poverty and education woes in the country, which the Laniers have visited “dozens of times” in the past 15 years on charity missions.

“We’re trying to get them clean water. We’re trying to get them good schools. And we’re trying to give them the supplies they need to get an education,” Lanier said.

Indeed, this year’s invitation includes a wish list of supplies, ranging from backpacks, glue sticks and construction paper to monetary contributions for raincoats ($20), blackboards ($47) and septic tanks ($4,000).

But back to Cyrus. No word on how long the Hannah Montana star will be on stage or what she’s charging. Or if non-boyfriend (and former underwear model) Justin Gaston will show up.

Cyrus was last here in March, for her second sold-out RodeoHouston performance. It drew a record-breaking 73,459 fans — just trumping the 73,291 who squealed through the 2007 show. In total, Cyrus played four Houston shows in less than 18 months, including sets at Reliant Arena and Toyota Center.

Top-tier entertainment, then, requires strict security measures. Guests will only be admitted with personalized wristbands and an ID.
“It’s great to see all these people happy,” Lanier said. “It also brings out the bulldog in us. You’d be amazed at how many people try to crash the event.”

Past party entertainers include Brooks & Dunn (2007), Dolly Parton (2005), Reba McEntire (2004), Diana Ross (2000), Johnny Cash (1995) and the Dixie Chicks (1993). Most holiday parties make do with dad dressed as Santa.

Cyrus, however, definitely kicks things up a notch. CelebrityAccess.com, a database featuring artist contacts and performance fees, lists Cyrus’ as netting $200,000-$500,000 per show during her Best of Both Worlds Tour.
“With her exploding even bigger this year, I would say the price likely doubled,” says John Escamilla, booking agent for the Meridian. “They likely paid top dollar.”
