CHAPTER 1
It was yesterday that my parents told me about Hawaii. I was to live with my aunt and uncle
there.
It was my surprise for the summer.
Too bad my other cousin Paige went to Florida for a summer camp thing she was doing
with her youth group at church. I was going to be the only girl in a house with One man and two boys. Actually, I had my aunt but she's a woman, so that doesn't count.
My parents were thinking about moving to hawaii, but, then their job has them traveling a lot.
Which is why I'm spending the summer with uncle Yushi and Aunt maria.
Uncle Yushi is hawaiian...which is why he lives in hawaii.
Aunt maria...well...she's white like my mom and me.
My dad, hawaiian as well, just like his dad, and so on.
So, I guess I'm half-white, half-hawaiian. Though, I just look white and with blonde hair.
I've had my challenges of telling people I'm hawaiian.
" So, what heritage do you come from? Swedish? You look swedish." My mom's co-worker pointed out at their business dinner. She was a brunette, with bleached white teeth and wine glass in hand, smile on her face.
" uh..I'm half white, half hawaiian." I said.
She stared at me in disbelief.
" Are you kidding?" She asked.
" Nope." I said, slurping the soda I had in my hand.
She looked at me in disgust.
Good, I hope it disgusts you. I thought in my head.
That was the lady who was trying to buy my parent's business and trying to scheme her way
through it. My parents didn't ever notice the scheming part, but I did.
Anyway, that's a flashback. Back to present.
(CASSIE'S ROOM)
" Knock Knock." My mom said, before entering the room.
I was packing up my two duffel bags. One from Victoria's Secret and the other by Roxy that was on sale for fifty dollars.
" Is that all your packing?" She asked.
" Yeah." I replied, zipping them up.
" Maybe you should pack more. After all, you're there the whole summer." My mom said, looking around my sun-bright room for anything important that I should take along with me.
" I thought I was there for only three weeks?" I asked, a bit shocked.
" No honey. Where did you get that idea?" she asked.
" I heard it from dad-"
" Oh no dear. That was the old plan. Your aunt and uncle want you there for the whole summer.
After all, you barely see them all. hmm...when did you last see them?" She asked, helping me finish my packing.
" mm...idk...when I was like...7?" I said.
" Really?! That long?" She asked.
" mhmm." I answered, as I walked over to my dresser and grabbed my underwear and bras to pack.
That was one of the reasons why I was so nervous in going to Hawaii in the first place.
I hadn't seen them since I was seven! I can't even remember what they look like!
The last time I saw them, was the last time I was in Hawaii, though, I don't even remember that.
" Well, I thought you were ten when we last saw them." My mom piped in after a moment of silence.
" No, that was Aunt Becky and Uncle Tom." I corrected, now grabbing my ID, phone and it's charger, along with my Ipod.
" Oh, oh yes, I remember now." Mom said.
Just then my door burst open.
" NO! YOU CAN'T LEAVE!" Lalaine pleaded, dropping to her knees and clinging on to my arm.
" WHAT will I EVER do without you here?!" Lalaine continued.
Lalaine then put on her best puppy dog face, and clasped her hands together in prayer mode.
" Oh LORD, please convince Cassie's mom into letting her stay here for the summer." Lalaine prayed.
My mom wouldn't help but smile at the over dramatic scene.
"AWW....mom...how can you say no to a face like that?" I asked.
My mom just shook her head.
" Ugh." Lalaine and I both let out.
Lalaine and I flopped on the bed, looking at my mom and waiting for her response.
Lalaine and I have known each other since kindergarten. We've had our fights and make-ups
but that's what brought us closer together than ever.
" HEy! Maybe you can get your parents to send you out to Hawaii instead of going to camp
at that lake!" I piped in, excitedly.
" Yeah! I can get my dad to pay six hundred dollars to get there!" She exclaimed, but I could tell there was some sarcasm in it.
" Of course my dad isn't going to do that.'' She said.
" I'll pay for your ticket then!" I said.
my mom was about to cut in but I beat her to it.
" I have money saved up. I have more than enough for her ticket." I said.
" Uh, no. That's money for hawaii." My mom said.
" Yeah but I can get a summer job there." I suggested.
" Let's see what her parents have to say about it." My mom said.
" Okay no problem." Lalaine said.
She pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
" Mom? Hey, can I go to hawaii with Cassie for the summer? Her parents say it's okay....
Really?! Great!" Lalaine said.
" She said yes!!" Lalaine yelled.
My mom walked up to Lalaine and took her phone, looking at it.
" Nice try." my mom said, hanging it up.
" But I don't think your mother would appreciate you getting permission from mother number two who is Megan." My mom said, smiling.
" I definately have to talk to Megan about changing her voice. She always has it high pitched." Lalaine said.
I laughed at this.
" Yeah sure. I'll go ask." Lalaine said, hopping up from the bed and running out of the room next door.
By the way, did I mention we were neighbors?
I crossed my fingers and said a prayer that my best friend in the whole world could go with me.

CHAPTER 2
SOO, Lalaine could come....but she wouldn't be able to come till three weeks.
I was kinda bummed but it was better than nothing.
She had to make an oath to her parents that she would do double the chores
and that meant cleaning her brother's room.
" okay. So you'll be sure to call me any chance you get?" My mom asked me, hugging me tighter.
" Mom I can't breathe." I said.
She pulled back, and I could see her watery eyes.
" Mom, I'm only gone for the summer. Not for life." I said.
" I know, I know. But it feels that way." She said.
" We'll miss you teddy bear." My dad said, hugging me.
When I was done with all my goodbyes, I gave the lady my ticket to scan and walked down the
narrow belt, entering the plane.
" Hello. Welcome aboard." The stewardess said as I made my way down the isle to my seat.
Thank God for the window seat! I cheered in my head.
It was so uncomfortable to sit in the middle or isle seat. No place to rest your head other than leaning back a little.
It wasn't until fifteen minutes later that they taxied down to the strip, since they had to make sure
all seats were in the upright position, tray tables up and locked, and belts fastened.
" Good Morning ladies and gentlemen. We are off to the lovely state Hawaii. We'll land in approximately seven hours and fifteen minutes. We might experience a little turbulence along the way. Thank you for choosing Continental Airlines." The captain said.
I heard the quick click as he put the radio walkie- talkie thing back.
Ten minutes into the flight, the turbulence started. Even though I was used to earth quakes, this was like a roller coaster. I gripped the bottom of my seat, holding on for dear life as I clenched my teeth together to prevent myself from screaming.
" First time flying?" A girl next to me asked.
I turned to face her and shook my head.
" No. I've flown before. but..I've just never been in this much turbulence before." I answered.
" Yeah, I know how it is. You get used to it after a while." She said.
" How long have you been flying?" I asked.
" Since I was ten. It used to be once a month, then every other month, then every few months." She said, shrugging her shoulders.
The way she said it, it was like it was no big deal.
" Dang. Why so much?" I asked, a bit curious.
" Parents divorced when I was seven. So, I fly out to see my dad." She said.
" Wow, is it hard?" I asked, wondering how difficult it was to be shoved back and forth from one parent to the other.
" At first. but, it's not too bad. Did a lot of forgiving that's for sure." She said.
The stewardesses came down the isle, offering a meal and drink, and headphones to watch
the movie.
I got a set, put them over my ears, and watched Narnia:PPrince Caspian.
Wow. I wonder what my life would be like if I was flying back and forth from one parent to the other. I think I'd kill myself or somehow pull off one of those parent trap schemes. I thought in my head.
When the flight landed and I got off the plane, heading to the gate, I saw many people there.
Okay.....how am I supposed to know who is my uncle? I thought to myself.
As far as I was concerned, most of the men there wore hawaiian shirts while women were in shorts, skirts, tank tops, or sun dresses.
No joke. This place is all beach all the time. I thought to myself.
" Cassie?" A man asked.
I turned towards the voice but couldn't see where the voice came from.
" Cassie! My gosh you've grown! You've gotten so big! " My uncle Yushi exclaimed.
Uh...yeah. I knew it was him when he walked forward.
Now I remember my uncle from long ago.
He was the crazy one. Always Mr. Fun.
How could I have forgotten someone so fun? I thought.
Just then a boy about my age was standing next to him as my uncle hugged me.
" Cassie, this is Josh your cousin. Josh, Cassie." My uncle introduced.
I held my hand out for him to shake but he held out both hands, putting a lei over my head.
" Aloha." Josh said.
" Oh yeah I forgot!" My uncle exclaimed. He reached over his head and took off his lei,
putting it over my head.
" There. Now you look like a tourist!" Uncle Yushi exclaimed, laughing at his own joke.
" Come on let's go get your bags." Yushi said, and like that we were walking to baggage claim.
THAT....is supposed to be my COUSIN? My gosh he's so cute! I thought in my head.
This was going to be interesting.....

It's okay. Thank you for reading it! lol.
Here's the next chapter.
CHAPTER 3
" Which one is yours?" My uncle asked.
" uh, I have two. One is Blue with patches all over it, the other is like a...a turquoise with Roxy written all over it." I said.
" Okay. We're gonna have so much fun! Surfing, fishing, teen hangouts!" My uncle exclaimed.
Old on the outside, young at heart. I thought to myself.
This was definately going to be interesting.
" You guys get the bags, I'll go and get the car and bring it around." Uncle Yushi said and then walked off.
" Sooo, how old are you?" josh asked, as he was looking at the belt in search of both bags as well.
" sixteen. You?" I asked.
" Seventeen." He said.
I nodded my head, not knowing what else to say.
" Yeah, my dad can be pretty crazy. Whatever you do, don't let him get to you on all the old legends. He can go on for hours." Josh said, smiling.
I smiled back.
" I'll remember that." I said, looking back at the belt and noticing one of my bags coming our way.
I started to reach out for it and grabbed it, setting it by my feet.
My other bag was getting close too. As it came in front of me, I grabbed it, pulling the strap over my shoulder and bent down to grab the other one, but Josh had already gotten it.
" I' got it." He said, smiling.
" Thanks." I said.
We made our way outside the airport to the pick-up area, waiting for Uncle Yushi.
" Let's see....it's about two o' clock. By the time we get to the house it'll be about three-thirty.
You want to hang out at the beach?" Josh asked.
" yeah sure.." I said.
Just then Uncle Yushi arrived right in front of us in a red jeep.
" nice." I said.
Josh set my bag in the back and I did the same with the one I was carrying.
We talked the whole ride there to the house and when we got there, I couldn't believe my eyes.
The house wasn't like....huge,...or big. But the way it looked, it looked so cool!
( OKAY...so this is the house...)
http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/galleries/2008/news/0801/gallery.allstarvillas.tal/images/pilaa_beach_house.jpg
( This is the backyard of the house. Ignore the one from the first pic. So, behind this yard, they have the beach. So, they can just walk to it.)
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p69/oaklea/-willow-houses.jpg
The backyard was amazing!! The trees looked like teepees or something.
Something that you could play hide and seek in. I know for sure that if I had that in
my backyard in California, I'd create it into my home.
" Your room is upstairs. Wanna check it out?" Josh asked.
I nodded my head with a smile, and followed him up the stairs.
" Now, this is the guest bedroom." Josh said.
I stared at it in awe. Josh fought back a smile from my facial expression
as I stepped into the room slowly, afraid that I would wake up from this dream.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f233/heatherdmax/thebed.jpg
He set my bags on the bed and showed me how to work the tv controller.
" Here follow me. I'll show you the loft." He said.
He led the way to another room. When I looked inside, I was amazed.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk231/JasonDDecker/79.jpg
" How...how do you afford all this?" I asked.
" Dad is a marine biologist and mom is an author." Josh said.
" What do you do?" I asked.
" I work at this place called Ka Lâ Ka Mahina Nâ Hôkû. I know the owner, so, I
sometimes get food for free." Josh said, with a smug on his face.
" The what?" I asked, embarrassed to ask and starting to blush.
" It's hawaiian for The Sun, The moon, The stars. You wanna go? Jake is probably there with his friend Matt." Josh said.
" Sure." I said.
We then went into the garage and rode our bikes down to the shack.
I borrowed paige's bike, which fit my height pretty well.
When we got there, all of Josh's friends were there.
I could see why they call it the teen hang-out.
" Hey James, this is my cousin Cassie." Josh said, introducing me to his friend.
" Hey how's it goin'?" James asked, offering his hand for me to shake.
I shook his hand and looked back at Josh who was pointing out some other friends.
" This is Jake and his friend Matt. This is Tiffany, the manager. Oh hey, you want something
to eat?" Josh asked.
" Sure." I said, looking at the menu.
I don't know why, but I was always difficult when it came to decision making.
" uhh...I'll get the umm...uh..how do you say that?" I asked Josh, but he was talking to some other people.
" Chicken Lu`au." I heard a voice from behind me. It was James.
" Or, if you like fish, the Mahi Mahi is good. Most haoles' choose that." James stated.
" Holee what?" I asked.
" Haole...it's a foreigner.Like...a white person." He said.
" oh." I said, turning to look at the menu.
" I didn't mean it to offend you." He said.
" No, No. It's okay. you didn't. I understand what you meant." I said, pasting on a smile.
Truth was I did. He was just making a point. I understood that.
I ordered the chicken...,whatever it was and a smoothie and sat down at one of the tables
in the sun.
" So, how old are you?" James asked.
" Sixteen." I answered. " You?"
" Same." He said. " You ever been here before?"
" yeah when I was little. I don't remember though." I said.
" ah. That's too bad. You ever surf or do any water stuff?" He asked.
" I don't know how to surf...but I swim." I said, sipping on my smoothie.
Tiffany came by, placing the order I had on the table.
I'm guessing James got something too because she placed a burger in front of him.
dang. I should have ordered that. I thought.
'' oh man. we'll have to take you kayaking into the caves and teach you how to surf. You'll love it.
It's fun!" He exclaimed, biting into his burger.
Josh and his friends came over and pulled up some seats next to us with their trays of food.
( Here's a pic of a small cave in Hawaii where you go kayaking. It's so much fun! )
http://www.letsgo-hawaii.com/honaunau/64caves1.jpg
Just then, a blonde girl walked in, and took a seat next to Josh.
" Hey!" He praised, wrapping her in a hug. " How was rehearsal?"
" Good. I'm beat tired though....can I have a sip of your water?" she asked.
" Sure." He said.
She grabbed it and practically drank the whole cup.
" Well when you say sip I didn't think it meant chug." He said, laughing.
" Sorry, it's just I'm so thirsty. My little brother decided to take my bike, which gave me the
only option of walking home." She said. " I'll go get you another one."
" No no it's okay. I was only kidding." Josh said.
" Oh by the way, this is my cousin cassie." Josh said.
Sara turned to face me and her eyes lit up.

CHAPTER 4
" Have I seen you before? You look so familiar!" Sara said as she straightened her position in
the chair.
" I don't think so...maybe...I've been here only once, but when I was younger." I answered.
" Maybe so. So, are you going to go to the school too?" She asked.
" I don't think she'd want to go to summer school with me." Josh said, laughing at this.
" Well she's going to be bored. She might as well go to the school. Hey! She can volunteer to help
out the kids with the day care!" Sara exclaimed excitedly.
" Sara, she'll be fine. I'm sure she'll find something to do here." Josh said smiling at her.
" Yeah yeah sure." Sara said.
It was weird how they treated each other. It was as if they were married or something.
In all my life of seeing couples make-out in public, or say they love each other, I knew it wasn't love. People often mistake euphoria as love. But, with these two, it was clear in their eyes that they were meant to be together. There was just something about them, but I didn't know what.
" Do you go to church?" Sara asked, snapping me out of my daydreaming.
" Uhh..no. I...I don't believe in God." I said.
" Oh...well...we have a youth group tonight at our church if you want to go." She said with a smile.
" uh thanks." I said, hoping she wasn't holding any expectations for me to go.
( NOTE: They're in a small part of hawaii. Everyone knows everyone and about everyone.)
[I]LATER THAT NIGHT.....YUSHI'S HOUSE[/]
" Are sure you don't want to come? It's a lot of fun! " Josh exclaimed.
I was in the guest bedroom, finishing up my job of unpacking.
" What's your definition of fun?" I asked, raising a brow.
I had only known him and Jake for a day and already it seemed like I knew my cousins my
whole life. His friends were pretty cool.
" Just come and see." He said.He was standing there in the doorway, leaning against the frame with his arms crossed.
" Sure I'll go." I said.
I finished folding my clothes and followed him to the front door.
" Have fun kids!" Uncle Yushi shouted as we left the house, getting into his red jeep.
Josh started the car and Jake came out the front door, rushing to the jeep.
'' wait up!" He yelled.
He hopped into the back, buckling his seat belt and we were on our way to their church.

CHAPTER 5
" What are you listening to?" I asked.
We just pulled out of the driveway and I could hear the faint noise of a guitar and some voices
through the speakers.
" Hillsong United. You heard of em'? " josh asked, as he turned up the volume for me to hear.
" no." I said.
I listened to the words and heard Christ and God.
The music was awesome, but, I didn't like the lyrics. Maybe if I believed in God it would be different. Well, I do believe in God, but, I don't really care I guess.
" Yeah they're an awesome band! They sing Praise and Worship. This song is...' You Deserve.'
There's other cool songs on here like ' Break Free, Time Has Come, Solution, Point of Difference, Tell the World That." Josh explained.
" YEah They're awesome! " Jake piped in from the back seat.
" Yeah you can borrow the CD if you want. I have like, a lot of them." Josh said, laughing.
" no it's okay I'm good." I said, smiling.
Josh pulled into a parking spot there at the church and we then walked into the church.
There was fast music playing which sounded like the bad we were listening to in the car.
The only way I could tell was by the voices.
We then walked down a hallway and into a huge room with a bunch of teenagers talking to each other, with which the music was coming from. There were tv screens with game systems connected to them, pool and air hockey tables. A stage with drums and electric guitars.
From when I went to church, this was way different than I expected.
No one was dressed in nice outfits as if they were going to sunday school.
They were all dressed normal, blue jeans and t-shirts.
Some dressed up preppy, or emo, or goth. All diverse.
" This is a church?" I asked, confused.
" Yeah." JOsh said, as if I should know this and laughing at the same time.
" I thought churches were all, I don't know...different from this." I said.
" Naw, this church is different. I get your point. Yeah we're not religious." Josh explained.
" oh." I said, not knowing what that meant.
" oh hey!" Josh yelled, waving at a group of friends.
he then walked over to them and started chatting up.
Jake went over to his friends, so I was left there staring at the place.
" Aloha." A voice said from behind me.
I turned around to see James there, smiling at me.
" Hey." I said, smiling.
" you like it so far?" he asked.
" uh, yeah. it's uh, it's different." I said, laughing a little.
" I guess it is." He said.
Just then a guy who looked to be about in his late twenties came up on stage and quieted everyone, telling them to take their seats for the sermon.
I sat next to Sara and James, with Josh on the other side of Sara.
" Oh my gosh I'm so glad you came! It's so much fun! " She exclaimed.
I smiled back naturally but I still felt uncomfortable and out of place here.
" ALOHA Everybody!! How you guys doing tonight?!" The pastor yelled.
Everyone in the room hooted and howled, clapping their hands.
" Alright! Who's ready for the Word of God?!" He yelled again, smiling at everyone.
Again, they shouted and hooted.
" Alright. how many of you have ever doubted God?" He asked.
All hands in the room raised up. I turned and looked at everyone, not sure if I should raise my
hand or not.
" I have too. In fact, I find myself doubting him at some time in my life everyday. I'm not perfect and I thank God that He doesn't expect me to be." He said, laughing.
" But the thing is, we need to learn to trust Him. Every time I'm going through something, or so stressed with work, I try to take care of everything myself and don't even ask Him for help.
Sometimes when I do ask Him for help, I don't always trust Him because I want to take control of a situation myself. There are times in your life where you'll feel all alone, or you'll question if God is even there. I've been there. You're not alone. God is always there and will always be there for you. All you have to do is call on Him. Call Him and he'll answer. You don't need some special prayer to get his attention. Just talk to Him as if you'd talk to your best friend."
It lasted for thirty minutes and after the sermon, he asked if anyone wanted to dedicate their life to the Lord or for a rededication. I looked around at everyone there and there were a few hands that raised up in the air and he had them come up to the front so he could pray for them.
" Alright you guys are dismissed! Have fun!" He said.
Everyone got up from their seats and went back to playing games, hanging out, and listening to music.
The guy was pretty funny I had to admit. He was real. Like, he wasn't fake.
He had stories from when he was little and all the way up to now.
If the guy didn't become a pastor, he would have been a great comedian.
" so how'd you like it?" James asked.
" I like it. It was pretty good." I answered, smiling.
" Cool. Well I'll see you guys tomorrow. My mom's waiting outside." He said.
" Alright see ya." I said.
He waved goodbye and headed out the entrance doors.
" You ready?" Josh asked.
" Yeah sure." I said.
" Hey Jake! Come on!" josh yelled.
Jake put the controller to the xbox back and came running towards us.
We drove back to the house, and Josh asked me if I liked it.
I gave him my honest opinions.
Josh and Jake stayed up late, wrestling and playing video games.
I was so tired that I went to sleep. The time change was something I had to get used to.

CHAPTER 6
I was up at 7:00 A.M. due to Josh getting ready for summer school.
" Josh where's my after shave?" Jake asked.
" What? You use that stuff already?!" Josh exclaimed.
" Hey! I need it you know." Jake defended.
" I don't know. good luck with it." Josh said as he went downstairs to get breakfast.
I got out from under the covers and decided to get up.
Might as well. I'm up already. I thought to myself.
" oh hey you're up!" Josh exclaimed. " hungry?"
I nodded my head slowly, yawning as I sat at the kitchen table.
" Oh yeah. Tiffany is looking for someone to help her out at the shack. So, if you want you can
go over there and apply." Josh said.
" yeah that'll be cool." I said.
I hadn't realized it but he set a bowl and spoon right in front of me, with a box of cereal next to it.
" Thankyou." I said.
I poured the cereal into the bowl and was about to get up to get the milk but he had already gotten it.
" Thanks."
" Sure sure." He said.
'' you know, for someone so young, you sure do act like a gentleman." I said.
" That's cuz I am." He said smiling.
I smiled back and took a spoonful of cereal.
" Alright I gotta go. My dad won't be back till noon. He's out fishing. But you can take the bike out
to the shack. Jake will be here...probably doing nothing like always." Josh said laughing.
" not true." Jake said, coming into the kitchen.
" So uh, where's Aunt Allie?" I asked.
" She got a ticket or whatever for a cruise this summer. All girls. There was no way we were going." Josh said, smiling at this.
" She's gonna be back in like two weeks though." Jake explained, chugging down a glass of chocolate milk.
" Seems like everyone is gone." I said.
" Yeah. Seems that way." Josh agreed. '' well I gotta go. can't be late for school. see ya."
" See ya." Jake and I said at the same time.
It was silent for a moment after he left.
" So what'd you want to do?" Jake asked.
" idk. what is there to do?" I asked.
" TONS!" He exclaimed excitedly.
'' okay let me go get dressed." I said, jumping up from the seat, running up the stairs.
I went to the closet and pulled out the first shirt I saw and grabbed my shorts, putting them on.
I brushed my hair and teeth and ran back down the stairs.
" Dude that was fast." Jake said amazed.
" Yep." I said, putting on my flip flops.
" Dude, most girls take like...forever to get ready. Always having to put on all that make-up and stuff. Ugh. THey think they look better with it but really, they look like a cake." Jake said, shuddering at the images that popped in his head.
" Actually I am wearing make-up. THe only reason why they look like a cake or clown is because they put too much on, or wear stuff that's not their shade." I said, defending make-up.
" yeah yeah whatever....girls.'' He mumbled while we walked to the garage and got our bikes.
( Here's what she wore.) http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/daniy95/My%20Photos/CarlySchroeder34.jpg
Beach Shack
We arrived at the beach and stuck the bikes in the shed of the beach shack so we wouldn't
have to worry about people stealing them.
Tiffany was there at the counter taking orders.
'' wow. this place is packed."
" naw. You should see it on fridays. Now THAT, is when it's packed." Jake explained, sitting on the bar stool.
" Hey jake. usual?" Tiffany asked.
" yep." He said.
" What can I get for you?" She asked.
" uh, just a strawberry smoothie and an application?" I asked.
'' sure." She said.'' oh and I don't do applications." She said with a smile.
" You have to pass the test." Jake exclaimed.
" A test?" I asked, getting a little nervous.
He nodded his head with a smirk on his face.
Just then Tiffany came back with the smoothies, setting them before us.
" Alright. I'll show you how to make all the smoothies and food. It's pretty basic. Nothing hard.
and the waitress part is easy. All you do is take the food to them." She said.
" okay." I said.
She gave me a quick run down on how to do everything and as surprised as I was,
I got the job.
" I'm surprised. Have you done this before?" Tiffany asked.
" uh, kinda. I've done the waitressing part before. Making the smoothies and working the register is new for me." I admitted.
" Well you passed. Now for your hours..." Tiffany said, thoughtful.
" Anytime." I said. '' I'm here for three months."
" Great! I'll have you work about seven hours a day. Weekends you can get off. but if you need time off let me know." She said.
" Alright cool." I said.
" Okay. so you don't have to come in until about nine, so, you'll get off around four or five." She said.
I nodded my head in understanding.
I was still standing behind the counter and Tiffany had gone out to the back to get something
when someone walked through the doors.

CHAPTER 7
"I'm going out to the beach." Jake said with Matt following him.
They headed out the door and it was only me and this gorgeous guy since TIffany was on her brake.
He was dressed nice, with those aviator shades on. From what I saw, he looked like a biker without all the black leather. I didn't know if he was staring at me or the menu behind me
since he had the sunglasses on and you were staring at your reflection.
" Your new." He stated.
I was still confused of what he was staring at, but I stared straight into the sunglasses, trying to see if I could see his eyes behind them but I had no luck.
Darn sunglasses. He probably does this to get on peoples' nerves. I thought to myself.
" uh yeah. I just started today." I said, a bit nervous.
I'd never felt someone intimidate me so much. It angered me though.
Usually I don't care what people think about me. I'm pretty care free.
But this guy..., there was something about him that made you feel small.
Maybe it was his cold stare? Even though you couldn't see his eyes?
He nodded his head as he took this in.
" Triple shot java." He stated. He then handed me the money and I put it in the register, giving him his change back.
I then turned around and started to make the smoothie. I could see him from
the corner of my eye and I could feel his stare on me.
I have to admit, I've never felt so scared in my life. Yet, at the same time, I was curious about this
stranger who seemed so intimidating.
" here you go." I said, smiling.
He didn't smile back. He just took the drink and walked out with his head held high and with a walk that screamed,' I'm all that.'
Some ego. I thought.
Jake came back in five minutes later and peeked his head through the door.
" Coast clear?" He asked, looking around.
He came in once he was satisfied that no one was here besides us two and his friend.
" I hate to admit it, but, that guy is scary." Jake said, making a face.
" Yeah....I know what you mean." I mumbled as I took a cloth and wiped the counters for something to do.
Stuck in curiosity, I decided to question jake about the guy.
" So uh, what's his problem?" I asked.
Jake took a sip of his smoothie and cleared his throat, getting into his story mode.
" Okay, so Rodney.." he began.
" That's his name?" I asked.
" Yeah...whatever. I like to call him shades...just as a joke. But he uh, he does drugs, drinks, and he used to go to our church. I heard he was a foster child and was always moved all over the states. That's why he got into drugs and stuff because he was so angry. He went to juvy when he was thirteen for killing a man ya know." Jake said.
I took this all in with a chill crawling up my back. The coldness in his voice and no emotion on his face. I put the two concepts together and came up with the solution that it was possible that he did all that stuff.
" But it's all rumors. Who knows?" Jake said, shrugging his shoulders.
" I'm gonna go out in the water. Wanna come?" Jake asked.
Right when he asked wanna come, James walked through the door.
" Come where?" he asked, smile on his face.
" In the Moana (Ocean)." Jake said, his smile spreading across his face.
" Heck yeah!" James exclaimed. " Come on Cassie!"
" I can't. I'm working." I said, hoping that was a good enough excuse.
" Nope." James said, walking over behind the counter and grabbing something from
a little cubby hole.
He put something by the register and I leaned over the counter to read it.
" paw." I pronounced.
" Pa'a." James corrected. " Means closed. So let's go!"
" Well what am I going to tell Tiffany?" I asked.
" tell me what?" She asked, walking in from the back.
" To tell you that she's going out in the ocean. Land isn't good enough for her so she decided to be a mermaid. See ya!" James exclaimed.
" Okay have fun!" Tiffany yelled.
We then walked out onto the beach and I stopped in my tracks.
" How can she take that so lightly? ' okay have fun!' I mimicked.
" that's tiffany. She's all about having fun." James said, then ran towards the ocean, diving in an on coming wave.
I stood there watching as Jake, James, and Matt were out there in the water messing around in the waves.
" Come on!" Jake exclaimed.
" I can't!" I yelled back.
Jake crossed his arms and pretended to pout.
" Why not!?" James yelled.
" I don't have a swimsuit." I said.
" So swim in your clothes." James said.
They all exclaimed for me to go out there so I took off my flip flops and ran into the ocean.
I was surprised at how warm it was. I was expecting it to be freezing.
" Not so bad is it?" James asked.
" no." I said smiling.
Jake splashed me with water and before I knew it we were had a water fight.
We played in the waves for a while and I don't know what caused me to look back over at the beach, but when I did, I saw Rodney standing by his car...looking in my direction.

CHAPTER 8
Even though he was still wearing his sunglasses, I knew we held eye contact.
but only for a moment.
I guess his phone rang because he pulled it out of his pocket, and talked to someone before getting into his car and driving off.
He didn't look my way again.
I went back onto the beach, too tired to play around in the waves and having them push against my body. Although it was fun, I hated he fact that the wave
overtakes you, pushing you out towards the shore wether you wanted to or not, then pulling you back out at sea.
I told the guys I was going back to the shack and then made my way up there.
" You done already?" Tiffany asked.
I looked over at the clock to see what time it was.
'' I've been out there for almost two hours." I said.
" Yeah that's not long at all." She said, tossing me a towel.
" Thanks." I said, wiping my face and drying myself off.
Next time I come here I'll have to wear my bathing suit under my clothes and bring an extra pair for just in case. I thought to myself.
" I have some clothes of mine you can wear." Tiffany said, walking out to the back.
" no, no it's okay." I said.
She opened a door and took some stuff out, then handed me a mini skirt and tank top.
" These should fit you. I think we're the same size but they might be a bit big on you." She said, studying the skirt that I held up to my waist.
" Thank you so much!" I exclaimed, giving her a hug.
" No problem." She said smiling.
I went into one of the stalls in the bathroom and got changed. When I came out and looked at myself in the mirror, I was....I don't know what I was.
More like uncomfortable.
My mom would kill me if I wore a skirt THIS short and I don't normally wear skirts so it felt weird.
I walked back to the counter, leaving my wet clothes on the post outside to dry.
Tiffany let out a laugh and I turned to face her.
" You look like a penguin walking around here. I take it you don't wear skirts?" She asked.
I nodded my head and laughed at myself.
A group of kids my age came through the doors, laughing and talking amongst themselves and placed their orders.
All but four tables in here were full because of this pack.
The tips were pretty good.
So far from the hours I worked and the people that came in, I made thirty dollars in tips.
When they were done, I cleaned up the tables and started washing the dishes.
" Oh don't worry about those. I'll get them. You've been working hard today and since it's your
first day, I'll let you off early." Tiffany said smiling.
" Thanks." I said, tossing the sponge into the sink, washed my hands and grabbed my wet clothes.
I walked out of the shack and rode the bike back to my uncle's house.
I took a shower and then went to sleep since I was so tired.
Before I knew it, I faded off into the land of dreams.....

CHAPTER 9
I had a dream about me being in the rain, walking and walking.
I was lost and couldn't find my way back to the city.
I couldn't tell if I was on someone's property or not, but it was dark, so I knew it was night.
There were trees, and it felt like someone was watching me with each step I took.
I wasn't able to get much sleep. I only slept for about an hour and laid there
for awhile after I woke up, hoping to go back to sleep. So, I decided to get
up and take a shower. I felt all groggy and gross, which
the shower seemed to help that.
I went into the loft and watched Narnia. I couldn't wait until the second one
came out on DVD.
" Hey! Home!" Josh yelled from downstairs.
" Hey!" I yelled back.
I was watching the battle scene where Peter chargers toward his enemies on his white horse.
It always had my heart going and adrenaline speeding
when I heard the music.
Made me feel like jumping into the movie to fight with the Narnians.
The music was so cool with it!
I heard Josh's footsteps coming up the stairs, along with Jake's.
" Hey what's up?" Josh asked, plopping onto the couch next to me.
" Not much. Pretty tired but I can't manage to fall asleep." I said.
Truth is, throughout the whole movie I was trying to go back to sleep.
For some reason, I can never manage to relax. It's hard for me. Even when
I'm laying down or sitting on a chair, it seems impossible for me to relax.
" Yeah I know what you mean. Usually it means that you have a lot on your
mind or really stressed about something." Josh explained.
" Yeah probably. I've never felt so lazy in my life." I said.
" You want to shoot some hoops?" Jake asked enthusiastically.
I was about to say no, but, if I got up and actually did something, I wouldn't
feel all crappy. Maybe I was going to start my period or something. I was
awfully moody."Sure." I said, getting up off the couch and
turning off the movie.

CHAPTER 10
I guess you could call me athletic and gifted at sports.
I've played Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, Field hockey, Soccer,
Football,Track, Cross-country and swimming.
Well, with football, I just like to throw the ball.
There is no way I could ever go out for the team.
Those guys would tackle me to the ground before I even had time to blink!
" Pass it! Pass it!" Jake exclaimed.
I pivoted around Josh and bounced it to Jake, who launched the ball into the hoop.
" WHOO!" I yelled, laughing.
" Heck yeah!" Jake exclaimed.
Josh bent over with his hands on his knees, catching his breath.
" It's two on one. Not even." Josh said between breaths.
" With the fact that I'm a girl and your bigger than the us...I think it's even." I said, smiling.
" Sure sure whatever." Josh said, smiling as well.
" Well I'm tired." I said, wiping sweat off my forehead with my arm.
" Yeah me too." josh agreed, wiping sweat off his forehead with his shirt.
" Aww, come on! We barely started!" Jake begged.
" We've been playing for an hour." I stated.
" And professionals play longer than that." Jake added.
" Yeah, well, I'm not professional so I don't play longer than an hour unless I get paid like one." I said.
" Alright alright." Jake said, dribbling the ball as we made our way back inside the house.
" I'm going to bed. Goodnight you guys." I said.
" Night." They said in unision.
I climbed the stairs with the rest of the energy I had and then took a shower.
As soon as I got into bed, I was out.
There was absolutely no trouble with falling asleep.

CHAPTER 11
Everyday when I went to work, Rodney always came in around the same
time, ordering the same thing. It's been a week and I've tried almost
everything on the menu. Rodney comes in, orders the same smoothie, says
the same words," The usual," and walks out.
Sometime I wonder if the guy can even talk. Maybe
he has a problem with stuttering?
What still bothers me is those darn sunglasses and
never being able to see his eyes.
What is with that? I can understand it if I see a girl not taking the shades
off, but for a guy?
" Hey you get off your break yet?" James asked, taking a seat at the bar
with Jake and Matt.
" In about.....ten minutes." I answered.
Truth is, I didn't really care for a break. I liked this job. I always pictured
myself working at a pet store but never as a waitress.
Tiffany started teaching me how to cook a few dishes, though
I could only do three. She pretty much does all the cooking and making
sandwiches, while I make the smoothies, take the orders to the people and
clean. It was fun!" Well, today you can get off early." James said
with a grin on his face. I turned to look at Jake and Matt to understand
what he meant, but when I did, I tried hard not to laugh at Jake.
" What?" He asked. I just shook my head and looked over at James to see
what he was doing. " Nothing." I answered.
James grabbed a chair and carried it to the wall where he stood on it to
move the minute hand forward on the clock.
" There." He said, getting off the chair and putting it back.
" Sweet! I should do that at school!" Jake exclaimed.
'' Yeah!" Matt agreed.
I shook my head and did the same thing that James did, but I moved the
minute hand back where it was.
" I'm not going to take advantage of Tiffany like that. She trusts me." I said,
putting the chair back.
" good and trust worthy....I like that." James said.
" I only have seven more minutes and then I'm clocked out k?"
'' yeah yeah okay.'' Jake said. " can I get a A.L.T?" Jake asked.
" Sure." I answered.
I put the money in the register and started on his sandwich.
" Dude....., avocado, lettuce, and tomato? Chicks eat that stuff." Matt said.
" Yeah.... and chicks like it when a guy eats healthy." Jake said slowly.
" Ashley isn't in here anymore." Matt said.
Jake looked behind him and all around the place.
" Aww man. She left already. Why is that every time I try to impress her,
she's gone?" Jake asked, looking up at the ceiling.
" Maybe cuz you scared her when you walked through the door." Matt
laughed. Matt turned jake around to face the mirror that was hanging on the wall.
'' ah come on!'' jake bellowed.
Jake's hair looked like a porcupine with his hair sticking out every which
way from being out in the water.
I gave him his sandwich and he devoured it in less than three minutes.
'' girls also like it when a guy eats like he's human." I pointed out.
'' Well girls are going to have to live with that. It's part of nature.'' James
piped in. " Sure sure whatever. Let's just go do whatever you guys were
thinking of doing. I'm off." I said.
I had a feeling that I would be needing my towel. These guys always do
something that involves water. Two days ago, they surprised me with water
balloons. Yesterday they attacked me with water guns. At least today, it's
expected. " So what are we going to do?" I asked, squishing my feet in the
sand so they could get warm. I couldn't help but look around for something that
the boys would be hiding, waiting to use me as a target.
There was a little boy not too far away from us with a little red wagon and shoveling sand into it.
I bet they payed him to throw sand at me. I thought as I watched the little boy keep piling it up.
He had a little smirk on his face.
I laid my towel on the sand and lay on it, and
then I looked at the boys. " What?" I asked, looking behind me and all around, cautiously.
" Are you good at balance and swimming?" James asked.
" sure." I said.
" Then you're all good!" James exclaimed.
I was beyond confused but then I saw the surf board that was standing in
the sand to my right. I thought it was someone else's, but I was wrong.
" You have got to be kidding!!" I exclaimed. I couldn't help but smile.
I had never learned how to surf and I always wanted to.
.
Wide grins spread across their faces.

CHAPTER 12
So....I went surfing!
It was so much fun even though I fell off the board about a million times until I finally
got the hang of it. Snowboarding was a lot easier!
James, Jake, and Matt were pretty patient with me so I was happy about that.
After the all the fun I had to go back and work again. I decided to work a little later than usual
since I was out in the water for two hours, which my break was only an hour.
Rodney never did show up that day and for some reason I felt disappointed.
I got mad at myself for that.
Why should I be upset that he didn't come today? I don't like him! Never will I like him!
He's....He's...He dresses up in a sort of punkish way that is so opposite from me, from the look
of it he probably listens to heavy metal, which I despise. and what's with those darn sunglasses!
When he walks into the place, he walks with some kinda strut like he's the only one that matters!
So, there is now way that I could like him. Even if I did....who needs love anyway?

CHAPTER 13
I awoke in the morning to Josh shaking my shoulder.
" Hey, wake up." Josh said.
It felt like I had no energy in my body to get up.
I tried with all the energy I could to get up but I couldn't move.
I must have said something because Josh helped me sit up.
" Ow." I said, groaning. I put a hand to my head and rubbed it.
It was pounding over and over like someone was hitting me with a hammer.
I swallowed and my throat burned.
" Your burning up!" He exclaimed as he felt my forehead.
I couldn't tell if this was a dream or if it was real.
I'm so confused. I thought.
It felt both hot and cold in the room at the same time.
Crap. I'm sick. I thought. I knew I was sick.
When I get sick, it's horrible. It lasts up to a week or two.
" I'll go get the thermometer." Josh said as he hurried out of the room.
I was awake now, but still zombie like as I stumbled to the bathroom, almost
falling. The whole room was twisting and turning and I felt all dizzy and
light headed. Josh was so much like a gentleman that it was too good to be
true. I turned the faucet on and splashed my face with cold water and dried
my face with the towel. He returned a second later and gave it to me.
I stuck it in my mouth and waited for it too beep, which seemed like
forever. BEEP BEEP BEEP.
I took it out and examined it.
" That can't be right." I said, squinting my eyes in frustration.
" Is this thing accurate?" I asked.
He took it from me as I handed it to me and looked at it.
" 103!!!" He exclaimed. " Holy crap!"
Jake came in the room just then and took a step back in fear.
" Dude, she looks like a ghost." Jake said." Like, really white."
I walked passed them to my dresser to get my clothes so I can get changed
but then I stopped in my tracks.
" What?" Josh asked.
I turned around and sprinted for the bathroom closing it behind me and
threw up in the toilet. " Oh yeah dude I can't handle that. You're the
doctor.... I'm in the loft." Jake said as he left.
" I'll call Tiffany and tell her you can't make it today. My dad will be here."
Josh said as he helped me back over to the bed since I was losing my
balance. " Maybe you need a doctor. If you temp. reaches 105 then it's
really really bad." Josh said. " No I'm fine. I get sick like this a few times a
year." I lied. Truth is, I only get colds. Sinuses draining, sore throat, and
fever. Never have I had my temperature at 103. Sure I've thrown up in my
lifetime but I've never had all four at once. I hate making a big deal out of
things and I didn't want to make a big deal out of being sick.
" Alright." He said, studying my expression before going back downstairs.
Uncle Yushi came back up with a tray of soup and and a HUGE glass of
water with nyquil on the side.
" Thanks." I said, taking a spoonful of the soup.
It felt like I swallowed fire.
" Cayan pepper. It'll help clear the sinuses. Drink lots of water." He said
before leaving the room. He came back with two heavy blankets and placed
them on the bed. " You'll want to cover up with these if you want to sweat
out that fever." He said. I nodded my head.
'' I'll be downstairs in the study. If you need anything just holler." He said.
With that, I was by myself in the room. I the rest of the soup, which did
clear my sinuses by the way. My nose was all runny and I felt like I could
breathe better. I only took a few sips of water and took the nyquil and went to sleep.

CHAPTER 14
I was sick for five days. I couldn't go to work and I didn't do much other
than eating and sleeping. Uncle Yushi was company some of the time,
reading some of the books he was working on.
I threw up the first two days until I couldn't throw up anything else but acid.
It was painful. It reminded me of that one time when I tried Ballerina Tea.
It was a dietary tea and I didn't really know what it was. I figured it was
something healthy for you. Totally the opposite.
I threw up from it. No wonder those ballerinas are always so skinny! I feel
bad for what they have to go through. Anyway, I'm all better now. I feel as
healthy as ever! Uncle Yushi gave me something to help detoxify my body.
It was gross at first but once I started drinking it, I got used to the taste.
" Finally you're back! I heard you got sick and your fever was at 103!"
Tiffany exclaimed. " Yeah it was a painful two days. I think I had the
stomach flu and something else." I said, walking behind the counter so I
could start my shift. " Speaking of something else, you had a visitor come
by here everyday asking for you." She said teasingly.
" Yeah?" I said, not really caring but a little interested.
I started thinking it was one of Josh's friends, maybe James.
" I started to get annoyed with it. The first two days he came by, he asked if
you were here, I said no. Then the third day he came and asked, I
mentioned that you were sick, though he came everyday anyway." She
said. " It was probably James or Matt." I said, shrugging it off.
" Nope." She said.
" Then who?" I asked, getting curious.
There was no other guy I knew or talked to other than Josh and Jake's
friends.
" Rodney." She said. I turned a complete 180, facing her.
" You're kidding!" I exclaimed.
" Nope." She said, wiping down a table.
" What did he ask? What did he want?" I asked.
Oh my God. Here I go again...forget about him Cassie! I scolded myself in thought.
" He asked if you were working those days and when you'd come back. I said I don't know when you're coming back." She said.
I nodded my head and helped clean the tables too.
" Hmm...wonder what he wanted." I mumbled to myself.
" who knows." Tiffany agreed indifferently.
Why would he be coming here asking for me? Maybe he was looking for someone else....
" Probably looking for some other girl." I said, believing the lie.
" Nope. His exact words were," what happened to the smoothie girl?'' Tiffany quoted, putting on a show. I could just picture her acting in some school play and getting the whole audience to applaud in encore.
" And?" I asked.
" Well aren't you interested." She teased.
I gave her a look and she continued the story.
" Okay, so I said,' You mean Cassie?' Then I said that you weren't working that day and he came the next few days asking if you were working. That's when I just flat out told him that you were sick. He asked when you'd be back and I said I don't know." Tiffany explained.
I was trying to get all of this in my head as clear as possible.
How can someone who barely says a word to me, ask for me? He seems so....so mad.
Maybe because I was the only one who could get his smoothie right. The only thing that he ever said to me in my first week of working there was,' Usual.' Guys can be so darn confusing! I thought to myself.
And as I thought this, Rodney walked right through the doors.

CHAPTER 15
My heart accelerated and my blood pulsed through my veins so fast
I thought they were going to pop out. The wind swirled around my hair,
causing it to be tossed around in the air from when he came through the
door. I couldn't understand this feeling, this anxious and nervous feeling.
Everytime I saw him, I'd get butterflies and have no idea what to say or how
to say it. It seemed like it was impossible to say anything to him because
he was so....intimidating.
" Usual." He said, like he USUALLY does with absolutely no emotion.
He had his aviator shades on like always and his facial expression looked to
me as if he were mad about something. Yet, he always seemed mad about
something. I was quick to making the smoothie and was thinking about
starting small talk, but it would probably turn out really lame and I'd make
an idiot out of myself. I didn't even have to tell him how much money he
had to pay, he'd already hand it to me before I made the smoothie.
That's it! I can't take this stupid akwardness any longer!
I thought in my head. So what if I make an idiot out of myself? I've got
to stand up to him and say something right?
I was about to say something but he surprised me, by saying words.
Actual words! I was beginning to think the guy didn't know any word other than 'usual'.
" My name's Rodney." He said, holding out his hand for me to shake.
I shook it and introduced myself as well.
" My mane is cassie." I said, rather shy.
I'm never shy! How is it that I'm shy?
" Where are you from?" He asked, sitting on a stool there behind the bar.
" America. Well, California." I answered, feeling myself turn red.
He nodded his head and took a sip from his smoothie.
" That's cool. So you're used to the beach." He said.
" Not really. I live two hours from it and we don't go that much." I said.
Gas prices were horrible and my parents didn't want to spend so much money going from one place to another on gas, when we didn't NEED to
go to the beach.
He was facing the window now, looking out at the ocean.
For all I knew he was looking at me through peripheral vision.
I felt his eyes staring at me yet he showed no sign of it.
" Feeling better? Heard you were sick." He said casually.
" Yeah I was but all better now." I said.
" That's good." He said.
There was an akward silence for a few seconds before he spoke again.
" I need to get going." He said rather abruptly. " See you tomorrow."
Rodney got up from the stool and swiftly walked out of the little cafe without
a glance back. Just then Tiffany came in with eyes widened and mouth open.
" Oh....My.....Gosh!" She exclaimed. " He is a fox! but I have to warn you, be careful."
" Why? Is he dangerous or something?" I asked, curious.
" I've heard stories about him and seen a few stuff myself so...steer clear of him okay?" She asked of me. I could tell she was being serious which made me a little cautious, but I was also curious about this mysterious boy.
" So have I." I mumbled.
I suddenly remembered the rumor that Jake had told me. It couldn't be true.....could it?
I tried to match all the pieces together and his personality fits all those qualities.
it was possible that he could have done all that stuff.

CHAPTER 16
The day went by slow. James stopped by and said hello, saying how happy he was that I wasn't sick anymore.
Uncle Yushi was busy writing his next book and Josh was busy with summer school.
Josh didn't need to take summer school, he chose to do it so he could take a class and not have to do it senior year. I found that pretty smart.
Tomorrow Jake and James have to go do something for a fundraiser that they signed up for and I don't work tomorrow. Tiffany was very sweet about me missing five days of work for being sick. I told her I could make up those hours over the weekend but she insisted that
I spend the weekend to relax and get my body fully healed.
Everything was pretty great so far for my first two and a half weeks here.
Just two more weeks and Lalaine would be come here to Hawaii!
Weird, It felt as if I've lived here instead of California.
As if I've lived here in Hawaii all of my life.
Jake and James started teaching me words in Hawaii, including stuff to where I'd no if someone were insulting me.
I decided I was going to take a hike up the mountain. It wasn't that far
of a bike ride and I enjoyed hiking, even though I tripped over almost everything in my path.
Plus, it seemed pretty relieving to be able to get the whole day to myself.
Good time to think, even if it's about nothing.
SATURDAY
It was too hot in the day to go hiking, so I waited until about 3:00 when it started to cool down. I ate something before I left and told Yushi I would be back.
He was so involved with his book, I wasn't sure he even heard me.
I got on the bike and pedaled all the way to the mountain. It was farther than I expected but at least it got my energy going.
There was a ranger station there, so I locked the bike up at the bike rack and started my hike.
There was a sign that stated three different trails, going in different directions.
I chose the one that went up the mountain towards the waterfall.
Waterfalls are so beautiful and exotic! I just couldn't pass up the oppertunity, even if it meant going uphill. All the trees were a beautiful green and the birds were chirping as if singing.
Butterflies flew by and the sun's rays beamed through the trees, bringing light into the forest.
It wasn't long until I saw clouds coming in and I heard thunder.
I had been hiking for two hours, before I decided to turn around and go back.
I saw the waterfall, which was gorgeous, and then saw another trail.
Though, this trail, was not a main one. It looked like it led to a mysterious meadow where a little kid could follow it, and find a special place they could call their own.
So, I decided to follow the trail and when I decided to turn back, and go back down the mountian,
I didn't know which way to go. I was too bull-headed to admit that I was lost, so I decided to walk around and try to find my way back down to the station.
It was getting darker and darker, soon the sun will have set.
I was walking for an hour, trying to find my way but couldn't.
Crap. I thought.
Five minutes later, it started to rain.
Could it get any worse? I thought.

CHAPTER 17
I pulled out my cell phone to call Uncle Yushi but there was no reception.
" Crap." I said, holding my cell phone in the air, trying to get signal.
I should have known there's be no signal in the forest, up in the mountains.
I walked around for about ten minutes until I found the main trail.
" YESS!" I exclaimed, jumping up and down like a five year old. It was
around six o' clock now. Yushi would be worried.
I convinced myself not to be scared, but how could I not?
There was a storm, all I had was a thin sweater and shorts, and it was dark.
The lightning lit up the night enough for me to see a bit, but it didn't help
much. " Cassie?!" someone yelled.
I turned my head fast, looking in all directions I thought it came from.
" H-Hello?!" I yelled back, scared of who it might be.
It wasn't a voice I recognized and who would know that I was even here?
Maybe it's Uncle Yushi or Josh. They probably came looking for me. I probably just heard wrong thinking it was someone else. I thought.
I decided I didn't care. All I could think about was getting to the house and
convincing Yushi that I was okay and that there was no need to being
worried. " Cassie?" The person asked.
There was concern in the voice so I knew I was safe from whoever was
calling for me.
At first I thought maybe it was the voice of God or maybe my imagination.
To my surprise, when the figure walked closer with the flashlight in his
hand, I saw the face of Rodney.

CHAPTER 18
I almost didn't recognize him without his sunglasses.
He was decked out in a black wardrobe and looked both angry and worried.
" H-How did y-you know I I was out here?" I stuttered.
It just dawned on me that I was cold. I was too busy walking around, looking for the path and didn't pay attention to the cold weather.
" I work here.I saw you come up the path..... Come on let's go." Rodney said, leading the way.
He took off his jacket and wrapped it around me as I followed him.
" Why didn't you come down sooner? It's dangerous being out here alone... in the dark....especially in this weather." He scolded.
Wow he's pissed. Well, I don't blame him. I would be too if I had to go search for someone in this weather. Especially if they were blonde. I bet they'll come up with some new blonde joke about this. I thought.
" I was. I just got lost." I explained, tripping over a rock on the ground.
" That's why you stay on the main trail." He said in a harsh tone.
" CASSIE?!" Someone else yelled, also looking for me.
" FOUND HER!" Rodney yelled, torward the person.
We walked a few more feet and the guy that was calling for me found us.
" Thank God." He said. " It'd be a shame if she went missing and found dead like that one other little girl three years ago."
I studied the man's expression, wondering what he was talking about.
Then I remembered what Rodney had said a few minutes ago.
It's dangerous being out here alone... in the dark....especially in this weather."
" Yeah." Rodney agreed, thoughtful.
The memory of my dream came into thought. The dream of me wondering around
in the woods, it being dark, and me being lost.
What did he mean? What happened to the other girl?
I felt like asking him questions but decided not to.
" Well come on. It's cold out here. Let's get you to the station and warmed up.I'm sure your folks are worried to death." The other man said.
He then took out a walkie talkie and told others that I was safe and to
head back.
It was much quicker going downhill and took only thirty minutes to get
to the station.
" I'll take her home." Rodney said, still frustrated.
I was going to object but he had already grabbed my bike and stuck it in the bed of the station's truck.
Crap. Just wonderful. Getting a ride home with someone ticked off at me. I thought.
" Now be careful next time." The man said, smiling at me, before I hopped into the truck.
Rodney talked to the man before opening the door and roaring the engine to life.

CHAPTER 19
If you thought that a jumbo jet was the loudest thing on the planet,
you're wrong. Silence has to be the loudest noise I have ever heard.
He stared straight out at the road, teeth clenched and jaw tight.
" Thankyou." I said, trying not to sound nervous.
But of course you could tell I was nervous. Thank God it was dark or he would see my cheeks
flaming red from embarrassment.
I wanted to break the silence, but I also wanted him to know that I was thankful
for what he did for me.
" It's my job." He stated in a flat tone.
Of course. He worked at the station. I thought.
It was silent for a bit and then I decided to ask the question going through my mind.
" What happened to that one girl?" I asked, cautiously.
It was dead silent in the truck. I couldn't even hear his breathing, unless he forgot to breathe
when I popped the question.
"She was hiking..like you. She was up there at night, my guess probably trying to
get out of there. She was raped and murdered. They never caught the man who did it.
But, two days later, they found a man's body lying in one of the rivers. The cops searched him
up and found out that he had a record. The police figured it was him...."
" Oh."
I didn't know what to say. What do you say to something like that?
" Yeah, just, next time don't go off on your own in the dark." He said.
It was silent the rest of the way to Yushi's.
We pulled up to the house and then he walked me to the door, setting the
bike against the wall.
I turned the knob to the door and walked in, with Rodney following behind me.
" Uncle Yushi?" I called out.
I heard footsteps from all directions coming to the front door.
It sounded like a stampede.
Josh, Jake, James, and Josh's girlfriend came running down the stairs while
Uncle Yushi came running from the study.
" Thank goodness you're alright!" Yushi exclaimed." I phoned the cops and they've been searching the area for an hour!"
I didn't know what to say. All I could feel was stupidity and embarrassment.
" She was hiking and got lost in the forest up on Hanna." Rodney explained.
" Thankyou for finding her." Yushi said, truly grateful.
" Well I have to get back to the station." Rodney said sounding out of place, waving goodbye and walking out to the truck.
" You should get out of those wet clothes before you get yourself sick again." Yushi said.
I nodded my head and ran upstairs and took a hot shower.
When I walked out of the bathroom, I saw a little tray with a mug of hot cocoa.
" Yushi." I mumbled, smiling.
My uncle was so sweet.
I grabbed the wet clothes and put them in the washer, and then went to the loft.
They were all playing video games and it looked like Uncle Yushi was winning.
" Whooo!!" Uncle Yushi exclaimed.
" No way! How do you do that?!" Jake exclaimed.
" I ho`oma`ama`a." Yushi answered, laughing.
I came in and sat next to them, watching them race against each other in some car game.
James came and sat next to me.
" What did he say?" I asked him, wondering what Yushi said in Hawaiian.
" Oh. He said ' I practice.' " James answered.
I thought it was pretty cool, how Yushi was an adult, but still a kid at heart.
" So, you okay?" James asked.
" Yeah I'm good." I answered with a smile.
" Bet you were scared huh? I mean, I would be if I were stuck up there in the dark."
" Yeah I was, but, good thing Rodney found me. I'd probably still be there trying to
find my way down." I said.
" Yeah..." James trailed off. " Good thing."
I finished the rest of the laundry and realized I still had Rodney's jacket.
I hung it up in the closet so it wouldn't get messed up and decided to go to bed.
I tossed and turned all night since it was hot in the room.
Even with the windows open and the wind blowing, it was still hot.
I woke up at six in the morning after getting about five hours of sleep, and decided to get
out of bed. The sun hadn't come up yet so it still looked like night.
There was a swing out on the bedroom patio, overlooking the ocean that I figured
I'd sit on.
The breeze felt good and it wasn't too cold outside. It felts really nice.
I wonder what it would be like to live here. I thought in my head.
I sat there for about thirty minutes and went back inside to start getting ready.
The weekends I had off of work, but I felt like going anyway. Plus, I had to give
Rodney his jacket back.
I just hope he's not still mad at me.....

CHAPTER 20
I left a note on the bar in the kitchen, letting everyone know that I went to work
to take care of a few things and that I'd be back.
When I arrived at the beach, I saw a figure sitting on the beach facing the ocean, decked out in black.
That could only be one person... I thought to myself.
" Hey." I said, walking towards him.
He quickly turned his head, expression of shock.
Even though he had his shades on, you could tell he looked surprised.
" I forgot to give this to you last night." I said, handing it to him.
He stared at it for a few seconds and took it, examining it.
" So, what are you doing out here this early?" I asked, taking a spot next to him.
I'm just going to have to fight my shyness and show that he doesn't intimidate me. I thought to myself.
" Why are you here and early? You work during the week and start late." Rodney said, ignoring my question.
" Couldn't sleep." I said.
" Sure." He said, turning his head and looking back out at the ocean.
We sat there in akward silence for a minute.
The sunrise was beautiful coming up over the ocean.
Waves were crashing in sequence, as if they were making music.
" Well uh..thanks...for bringing back the jacket." He said, getting up.
" You're welcome." I said, a little hope in my voice.
I thought about getting up to, but decided not to.
He needs to become more social. I thought, getting up and going into
the cafe.

CHAPTER 21
" You know you don't have to work today you know." Tiffany reassured me.
I really didn't care if I worked today or not. It could be everyday of the week for eight hours
and I wouldn't care. Working gave me something to do and it was something I enjoyed.
" I know." I said, cleaning some of the tables.
" I'd take advantage of the offer. Today is your last day for a break and tomorrow you start.
So, might as well do something fun today." She explained.
" This is fun." I defended with a smile.
" You call this fun? Busting tables, cleaning up after other people and making people their food
when their old enough to make their own food at home? No. I wouldn't count that as fun if
I were you." She laughed.
" Yeah but you enjoy it." I pointed out.
" Yeah but that's different. I actually own the place, which makes it fun." She said, laughing.
" Sure sure." I said, agreeing but not totally.
" If you don't leave, I will. Heck I could use a break." She said, wiping her face with her arm.
" Alright. I'll cover your shift for the rest of the day and close up." I said.
" You're kidding." She said, not believing me.
" Nope."
" Alright see ya!" She exclaimed, tossing the rag into the sink and grabbing her purse.
" Here's the keys." She said.
And with that, she was out the door with a huge smile on her face.
The rest of the day went by slow, but I did a great job. I was able to make everything and get
people's orders as if I had been born working there.
Rodney came in for his ' usual' and as usual, he said the same thing.
Instead of leaving like he usually did, he sat at the bar.
" Can I get you something else?" I asked.
" No I'm good thanks." He said.
It was silent and he just sat there, with those darn sunglasses on.
It bothered me so much, I decided to come out and say something.
" What's with the shades?" I asked.
He looked at me as if I called him a martian.
" You're always wearing them. Even when you're out of the sun." I commented.
" Guess I just like them." He said.
A group of girls came in, talking about some band that was having a concert up at the
stadium.
" Yeah! He's like so hot!" One girl exclaimed, sliding into one of the booths.
" No! Kevin is cuter!" Another girl objected.
" Joe is best! He's a comedian." A blonde was saying.
" Whatever. I'm just so excited we get to see them in concert! For free!" A girl with brunette hair
exclaimed.
" Wait, the concert is free?!" The blonde exclaimed.
" Yeah, it's a free concert! For some charity thing." She pointed.
I couldn't help but over hear. As soon as the girl mentioned the name Kevin and the other Joe,
I got excited. I loved the Jonas Brothers!
" Lucky." I mumbled under my breath.
" What?" Rodney asked.
" oh, uh, nothing. I was just saying those girls are lucky." I explained, looking over towards the ocean, not wanting to meet his gaze. Though I could never tell if I was since he was wearing
miniature mirrors over his eyes.
Rodney never said anything else. He took out a book and started reading it while listening
to his Ipod.
So the guy reads. Who knew? I thought.
It wasn't until eight that night that I closed up. I was too tired to stay there for any longer.
I felt like I could faint any second.
Rodney had left hours ago but then came back, getting something else and just chilled there.
I couldn't believe he was still here. Usually he left as soon as he got his usual.
" Hey I'm gonna close early." I said.
He put his book back in his back pack and slung it over his shoulder.
A guy walked through the doors about my age, maybe eighteen, and came towards the
counter. He had bronzed hair and hazel eyes with fair skin.
" Oh you're closed?" He asked.
" Yeah I'm closing early. Sorry." I said, locking the register and putting the sign on the
counter.
The guy still stood there, but looking around.
" Can I help you?" I asked.
Rodney was still there, fiddling with his Ipod.
" Uh, yeah, you uh, you want to go out some time?" He asked.
It took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting that.
" Uh, I..." I trailed off.
Rodney had looked up and over at us.
I couldn't read his expression.
" Uh, I don't know. I don't even know you." I said, a little embarrassed, walking over to the counter and grabbing the keys so I can start locking up.
" Get to know me. You want to go do something when you're done locking up?" He asked.
He had no problems with confidence. In fact, he seemed a bit too confident with himself.
Maybe ego?
I was about to say something but Rodney cut in.
" Actually, we're going somewhere." Rodney said.
Rodney looked at the guy as if saying, ' try and cross the line. You won't make it.'
" uh, alright. Some other time then. I'll see ya around." He said, walking out the door.
" Oh, and by the way, my name is Chad." He said with a smile. He then walked out the door and was gone.
I turned to face Rodney and gave him a questioning look.
I actually felt embarrassed from the whole scene.
" You'll thank me soon. If not soon, then later." Rodney said.
" Oh? and why?" I asked, crossing my arms.
" He's not good. He goes to my school. Trust me, I'm doing you a favor." He said, walking out the doors.
I shook my head and continued locking up, making sure everything was off.
I locked the entrance doors and walked to the bike rack to see Rodney standing there, leaning against the building.

CHAPTER 22
It surprised me that he was still here. I expected him to have left already.
His shades were off, which I also found surprising.
" Uh...hey" I said, walking past him to get to my bike.
I pulled out my cell phone to use it as a light, so I could unlock the lock
on my bike.
" You busy?" He asked.
" uh no. Just...going home." I said. " Aren't you?"
" I was. But I figured why not keep to my word." He answered.
" Word?" I asked, confused.
" I said We were going to do something." He explained. " I hate it when people
say they're going to do something, but never do it."
" Oh, uh..." I stammered, trying to think of something to say, even though ' sure ' was the
most suitable answer.
" Or another time if you're busy." He said.
" Uh, sure." I said.
" Cool." He said, walking towards my bike. " May I?"
" Yeah." I answered.
He wants to ride the bike? I thought.
He grabbed it and carried it to his car, sticking it in the back seat.
I never thought it possible to be able to do that.
" Are you hungry? Haven't seen you really eat anything all day besides having a smoothie."
" Uh, a little." I answered.
" There's this cool coffee place up here." He said, starting the car.
" You go there everyday." I stated.
" uh, yeah." He said, sounding a little surprised.
" I figured you did. I mean, you come to this place everyday and order the same thing." I explained.
" Observant." He mumbled.
" er yeah." I said, feeling uncomfortable.
Now he's probably thinking I'm some stalker.
I looked over at him, and he seemed tense.
I then noticed his Ipod in the ash tray with some cord connected to it and the stereo system.
" What kind of music do you listen to?" I asked, reaching for the Ipod.
" Uh, pretty much everything except all that heavy metal stuff." He said.
I turned to face him, shock completely clear on my face.
" What?" He asked, a little harsh.
" I..I figured you as someone who listened to that. I mean, you look like you listen to it."
A small smile creeped across his face.
" Yeah, well just because I dress the part, doesn't mean I have to listen to the music.
I like the style."
I scrolled down the playlist, not knowing any of these artists except Mozart and Beethoven.
" Classical, Jazz, Country, and Techno." I stated, looking at all the genres, not believing my eyes.
" What?" He asked.
I was quiet at first, trying to think of what to say, without offending the guy.
" I just can't get over the fact that you listen to this. You don't look like it."
" Looks can be deceiving." He stated, pulling into a parking lot.
He parked the car into a spot and we both got out, walking into the coffee shop.

CHAPTER 23
When we walked through the doors, it was all lit up like starbucks, except, it looked better.
There was that fake ivy covering the ceiling with white Christmas lights wrapped in it and around
it. It looked like a house in how there were four little rooms, each furnished like a home.
There was also a cupboard with a whole bunch of board games and little fun stuff.
A piano sat in the corner next to a screen t.v. that a few guys were watching a basketball
game on.
" What do you want?" Rodney asked, looking at the menu.
" Oh, uh, chai tea latte and breakfast croissant." I told the cashier.
" Usual." Rodney said.
" Alright that'll be $10.20." The girl behind the counter said.
I got a few dollars out of my pocket to give to Rodney but he said he got it.
We then went into one of the little rooms that was empty. There was a chest with games
and a little t.v. with some show from disney channel playing.
" What time do you have to be back home?" Rodney asked.
" Uh, around ten." I said, looking at the clock on the wall that said 8:30.
Crap. It's going to be a looonng and akward time. I thought.
" I have to leave earlier. Have some errands to run." He said.
" Okay." I said.
Whew. That makes it better. I thought.
" So do you listen to alternative, rap, or R&B?" I asked.
" Alternative and some rock. Not that big a fan of rap and that R&B stuff." He answered.
The girl that was at the cashier brought us our food and drinks and left back to the counter
when another customer came in.
" What about you?" He asked.
" uh, pretty much anything except heavy metal. Every thing else I'll listen to."
I saw that his usual was some kind of sandwich. Pastrami of some sort?
" Interesting. I figured you as someone who listened to something like
Cascada or something preppy girls would listen to."
I felt my brow raise.
" You think I'm a prep?" I said, laughing hysterically.
" The way you dress..but then..looks can be deceiving." He said with a tiny smile.
" Oh, no. I'm far from prep. I'm not the abercrombie/hollister preppy girl,
I'm more of a tomboy." I defended.
" Sure sure." He said, taking a sip of his drink.
The time had gone by so fast. It seemed like we were only there at the coffee shop for
twenty minutes. He drove me home and of course, Uncle Yushi was concerned about me
not coming home sooner, but glad that I was in before ten.
" So where were you?" Josh teased.
" Went to this coffee shop. It was pretty cool." I said.
" That's cool." Josh yawned, walking to his room.
" Goodnight!" I yelled to everyone.
" Night!" Everyone yelled in unision.
For some reason, I felt like I was living with the brady bunch, even though this family
was far from that family.
I changed into my boxers and t-shirt and crawled into bed, trying to get warm under the
comforters.
Tonight....was a pretty great night. I thought.

Alright here's the next chapter. Sorry it took so long.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! :D
CHAPTER 24
It was finally wednesday, New Years Eve!
I was so excited, even though I had to work that day.
But, I didn't mind. Tiffany cut my hours so I could do something.
It was cool.
Rodney cane in at his usual time and ordered his 'usual' and sat at one of the booths,
reading his book.
He didn't say much.
Just asked how my day was and If I was going to the Luau.
" It's good so far. Uh, yeah. I'm going to it. It's a big deal huh?" I asked.
" Yes. Very big deal." He stated.
" You going?" I asked.
It was silent for a few seconds before he replied.
" Maybe." He answered.
I made myself a smoothie and put the money in the cash register.
I eyed the cover his book, trying to read it.
" What are you reading?" I asked, taking a sip of my smoothie.
" A Long Way Gone: Memoirs Of A Boy Soldier." He answered, showing me the cover
while still reading it.
The cover was a light green, with an African boy walking along a dirt path.
He had on a red shirt, blue shorts, torn up flip-flops and carried a weapon.
The young boy probably wasn't over the age of fifteen but you could see that he
was in emotional pain with the way his head hung low and his shoulders
slumped.
" What is it about?" I asked.
No doubt, I knew it was about Africa.
" It's about the genocide there in Africa. These rebels come in and go from
village to village, destroying them and killing everyone. Men, Women, and Children
of all ages. This boy travels with friends trying to escape from them but also looking
for his family. He goes through all this trauma and sees a lot." Rodney explained to me.
It seemed like an interesting book to read.
" I'll have to read it sometime." I said.
" Here." Rodney said, handing the book to me.
" You kidding? No, you're already reading it. I'll just go by it." I said.
" Chill. I've read it ten times. This would be my eleventh. Go ahead." He said, with the book
in his hand.
" Thanks." I said, taking it.
I felt bad afterwards for even saying anything, even though it wasn't a big deal.
I opened the book and started reading the first chapter.
It grabbed your attention at the very beginning.
" I'm gonna head out." He said.
" Oh okay." I said, holding out the book for him to take back.
" Nah, hold onto it. When you're finished reading it, you can give it back." He said.
" I probably won't finish for a long time." I said.
" Trust me. This is one of those books that keeps you hungry for more. And I've
read it ten times. I bet you'll finish in about three days." He said, before he slung his
backpack over his shoulder and walked out the doors.
" Cool." I said to myself, opening it back up and reading it again.

CHAPTER 25
When I got home after that day of working, I took a shower, got dressed, and continued
reading the book. I was already in the thirteenth chapter.
This book was so intriguing, I couldn't put it down. Though I have to admit, I did
start to tear up at certain parts.
It's hard to picture myself living in Africa like that, and to be able to keep going
into situations that are dangerous, only to get out of the danger.
" Hey let's go!!" Yushi exclaimed.
I didn't want to stop reading. I wanted to try to read the book in one day.
" Where we going?" I asked as I came down the stairs.
" To the Luau." Jake exclaimed.
" Oh yeah, I totally forgot." I said, putting on my flip-flops.
" What is it anyway?" I asked.
" It's for New Years. It's a huge feast, but really what it is, is a HUGE PARTY!" He said,
extending his arms out with emphasis on huge.
" Alright.I'd take a sweater for when it gets cold." Yushi said.
" Cold?" I asked.
" Yeah. It's for just in case. I don't think you're used to the weather here at night." Josh explained.
I ran back upstairs, tripping on one of the steps on my way up and went in my room to get my jacket.
" Okay ready!" I exclaimed.
I quickly went into the bathroom, sprayed myself with my 'Midnight Gardenia', combed through my
hair and tried to put a little make-up on.
I was rushing so much that I messed up on the eye-liner.
" ugh. Forget it." I said, putting it back on the counter.
I took a piece of toilet paper off the roll and wiped off the eyeliner, to where I had on no
make-up at all.
I ran back downstairs and met all of them at the door.
" Women. They say they're ready, but that actually means they'll be ready in five minutes." Josh told Jake.
" Remember that." Josh added, with a little laugh.
I rolled my eyes and went out with them to the car, and we drove off where they were
having the 'Luau'.

sorry. I know it's short.
Sorry it took forever to post new chapters
on this FF and the other one.
Been so busy with school.
CHAPTER 26
For the whole drive there, which was about ten minutes, I couldn't stop thinking
about what the 'Luau' would be like and if Rodney would come like he said he would.
Well, he said that he would ' maybe ' come, and for a guy, maybe usually means no.
But that didn't stop me from hoping he would be there.
When Uncle Yushi parked the car, we got out and made our way to the beach where there was
a HUGE bonfire and tons of people. There were people playing music
on the guitars, or whatever they were. They looked kinda like guitars but had a different
sound and looked a bit different.
I took my flip-flops off and walked along the cool, smooth sand and followed Josh
and Jake to a spot where their friends were.
Surprisingly, it was cold.
I had brought a thin jacket, thinking it wasn't going to be cold at all, but I was wrong and was
now wishing that I had brought my sweatshirt.
Thank goodness all of Josh's friends were right by the fire.
I looked around at all the faces of the people, in search of Rodney.
I surveyed every face, looking everywhere. There was too many people in the way and way too
many people period. Plus, how can you find anyone when it's dark out here with only one source of light?
My heart fell when I saw that there was no sign of him anywhere, so I gave up looking.
Why am I getting so emotional? ugh! I shouldn't be! I thought in my mind.
This was not what I needed.
My emotions going up and down like a roller coaster all for a guy.
Just let go. Don't get caught up in a relationship Cass. Who needs love anyway?

CHAPTER 27
It had been thirty minutes of people just talking and listening to music, that I began to
give up on looking for Rodney.
hmm...wonder if he felt this same way when he was looking for me in the mountains.
I thought to myself, getting up off of the blankets.
I walked along the beach towards the ocean, and stopped right in front of it, letting the water
rush up on the shore, covering my feet in it's cold blanket.
My feet sank into the sand and I could the water coming back down and onto my legs,
going back into the ocean.
Weird, when you do it, it feels like it will take you with it back into the water.
Like it's trying to get you to fall, or it's probably just wanting you to go out and enjoy
deep, vast ocean.
I took in a deep breath, breathing in the air that smelt of Jasmine and other flowers
I wouldn't know.
On my bike rides to work, I would always pass the bushes and trees in the neighbor's yard
that were full of hibiscus and other wild, exotic flowers I didn't know.
I took in my last breath and decided to go on a short walk, but when I turned around,
I saw a figure in the dark by a tree.
At first I thought I was mistaken, but as I walked closer to it and squinted my eyes, I saw that it
was a person.
Before I could do anything, the figure stepped out of the dark and came walking up to me.
Then did I see that it was Rodney.

CHAPTER 28
Butterflies went through my stomach like I never thought they could.
I'm not sure if it really happened, but when I saw his face through the shadows,
my heart felt like it skipped a beat.
Just when I gave up looking, he comes around.
" Hey." He said, walking towards me.
" Hey."
There was kind of an akward silence when he reached me.
So, I just brought up the subject that had taken me by surprise.
" I thought you weren't coming?" I asked.
" I said 'Maybe' I would come." He answered.
" yeah but usually that and ' might' are a no. So I figured...." I trailed off, knowing I was sounding
pretty dumb.
" Well I uh, I'm almost done with the book."
" That's cool. So you like it?" He asked.
" yeah. It's pretty interesting."
He nodded his head and looked out into the dark at the ocean.
Though you couldn't really see it, you knew it was there just by the smell and hearing the waves.
" You hear that?" He asked.
" Hear what?" I asked, wondering what he was talking about.
There wasn't much to hear but the party.
" The whales." He said, moving a little closer to the shoreline as if that would help him
hear better.
" I can't hear it." I said.
" no, no. Not hear, but listen. If you listen, you'll hear far more and deep." He corrected.
It wasn't a correctness like a parent or family member towards a child and it wasn't the
correctness that made you feel stupid. Weird, but it felt kind and gentle.
I listened to what he said and then listened harder for the whales.
I blocked out everything else, to the point where all I could hear, were the whales.
It sounded like cries, but they were talking to each other.
The noise coming from the whales sounded like wailing, but it also sounded beautiful at the same
time.
" Wow." I said. " It's Beautiful."
Rodney nodded his head and turned to face me.
" Yeah it is. It's wonderful how God created them." He said, looking back out at the ocean.
It took me by surprise that he had said this.
Of all the things that I pictured him as, this wasn't one of them.
I'm guessing now, that he was a Christian.
" oh, you uh, Christian?" I asked.
He turned to face me and I couldn't really read his expression.
" Yeah I guess I am. I don't know, to me it doesn't really matter what religion you are
as long as you know Jesus." He said.
I didn't know what to say to this, since I didn't exactly believe in God.
" What?" He asked.
I didn't realize it, but I was staring at him.
" Nothing, it's just, you don't seem like the type..." I trailed off, feeling stupid.
" Oh, another assumption of me huh?" He asked.
He didn't seem bothered by the fact that I judged him.
Rather, he sounded curious.
" So tell me, what did you first think of me when you met me? I'm
actually really curious about that." He asked, bending down and sitting on the sand.
Oh boy. Here we go. Long conversation that I never knew would come up.
So, I took a deep breath and sat next to him, bracing myself for what was about to come out
of my mouth.

CHAPTER 29
All my life, I've always been told that honesty was the best policy.
My biggest pet peeve, was lying.
I hated it being done to me, and I learned that lying gets you no where.
I considered lying right now, because the truth seemed too embarrassing to admit.
Sure, you'll get away with it a few times, but it'll always come back to bite you in the butt.
" Well, it started when I first saw you. I thought you were really cute but scary." I admitted.
Thank God it's dark or he would be able to see my cheeks turn bright red.
He didn't seem bothered by this or flattered or embarrassed himself.
He took it cooly like he usually takes everything.
" Meaning?" He asked.
" What do you mean, meaning?" I asked.
" You said I was scary..." he pointed out.
I flushed another shade of red.
" Well, no offense but you seem very intimidating. I mean, each time you came into the
cafe, you would never smile. In fact, you looked like you were always pissed off. Then, the
stories about you doubled that scary factor. The way you dress, like, punkish, I don't know..
it just...doesn't seem christian to me. Like, I've never seen a christian dress like something
other than all churchy." I said.
I took a deep breath and he was really quiet.
I was afraid I had offended him but he surprised me when he began laughing.
I couldn't help but jump a little when he did.
" That doesn't surprise me. Guess I can be that way huh?" He asked, more to himself than
he asked me.
" What were the stories you heard?" He asked, again curious.
" Welll.....that you do drugs and drink and used to go to that church there, and that you
went to juvy for a while. That you're a foster child and that you killed a man." I said.
He was silent for what seemed like a minute before he spoke.
" I..I didn't mean to..." I trailed off.
" no, it doesn't offend me. It's just...it sucks when people don't get stories straight." He said.
I was afraid to say anything else so we just sat there for a few minutes before he spoke again.
" Thing is, I was a foster child. My mom didn't want me and I was sent off to some foster
parents here. I was about thirteen. I had a rough time making friends since
I was an outsider." He said, pointing at his clothes.
He looked at his hands and then continued.
" Before I came here to Hawaii, My dad had walked out on us when I was ten
and didn't know how to deal with it. I kept everything inside and was a loner
in school. That's a lie about me going to juvy. I've never been there.
But, for whatever reason, my mom just decided to get rid of me. She sent me to some
foster parents here who are nice and I didn't deal with it easily.
When I got into school, Lets see, I was thirteen? Yeah Thirteen.
I was still a loner, and didn't care to make friends. Guess you could say I was always
in a pity party. Then, I met this one girl. She came up to me and asked me what my name
was and why I was always quiet. She was so innocent.....
Her name was Alissa....
Anyway, we became friends all through Jr. High and then when we got into high school, she
met some people and that's when everything changed. She started getting involved with the
parties and I went to a few and that's how I got involved with them..."
He trailed off, a break in his voice.
Rodney was telling me his life story.
I realized this must have been hard for him to say.
I guess he really trusted me.
If this had been my life story, there is no way that I would tell anyone.
How could you?
He looked out at the ocean and I thought I saw a tear in the corner of his eye.
He looked back down at his hands and continued....

CHAPTER 30
He dug his hand into the sand, clutching it in his fist and then letting the sand drop
back down and he then continued the story while still doing this.
" We would go to a party every friday night. I didn't exactly have friends, they were more
like acquaintances. Alissa and I would get high and drink and stuff. She was beautiful, so
of course the guys would hit on her. There was this one night we went to go do our thing
up in the mountain. Get high or whatever. I thought it was cool.
We were only sophomores, and we were doing all this....
We were all hanging out and Alissa and this one guy went on a walk together.
I stayed behind with the rest of the group, laughing at stupid stuff that didn't make any
sense because we were all wasted, yet still sane.
I realized that they were gone for a while so I went to go look for them, you know, just in
case something bad happened like, someone falling off a cliff...
When I finally found them, she kept saying," no. Stop."
I guess he didn't listen and then it turned into a fight. He punched her and she fell
backwards, hitting her head on a rock. You could hear it and just by the sound, you knew
she was dead. I got into a fist fight with him. I never killed anyone, but if I hadn't stopped,
I probably would have.."
He traced the sand with his finger, as if he were writing something, and then continued on.
"Anger, is not something you take out on someone. Even if it feels good at the moment.
But anyway, some of the guys back at the spot a mile back found us and broke up the fight.
When everyone saw Alissa, they all started freaking out, wanting to get the heck out of there.
No one knew what to do. I yelled out for someone to call 911, which, fortunately someone
was wise enough to do it. The ambulance and cops showed up.
The girls who called stayed behind to answer the questions. They were old enough to drink
so it wasn't illegal for them. They didn't get involved with drugs, so that kinda helped them.
But, even being around it can get you arrested. I think their parents paid the fines and that's
how they got free from going to jail.
Me, I hid in the bushes, watching them take Alissa's cold, lifeless body, and putting it in the
ambulance. It was the worst thing.
I mean, having your best friend being driven away in an ambulance, knowing that there's
no heartbeat in them, it kinda makes you feel crummy...."
"Everything changed after that. Ever since then, I gave up on the parties and stuff.
I saw this one homeless guy on the street, trying to preach to people and tell them
about how Jesus loves them and forgives. People walked passed him, without a second glance
or some would say God Bless and keep walking. I walked up to him and asked him who Jesus
was. His eyes lit up and I sat there on the sidewalk, listening to him for hours.
I was so interested in this. So, that's how I became a Christian. I accepted the Lord that day.
I decided to go to church here, and rumors fly easily here in this town, so, it came through
the church. When I walked in, I felt, out of place. Some people judged me, others didn't.
But it's my own fault, I didn't give them a chance. I just walked out twenty minutes into the
service. You can feel it when a person judges you. It's one of the worst feelings on the list of
worst feelings." He said.
I just sat there, staring at him. I had no idea what to say to this.
I must have looked frightened because he was quickly alert.
" aw, crap. I scared you huh?" He asked.
I quickly shook my head and looked at the ground.
" No, no. Not at all. I'm jut listening. My gosh, that sucks. So, that's what you were talking
about, when you drove me home after I was lost..." I said.
He nodded his head and looked out at the ocean.
" If I could take it back, I would. There's some things in life that you shouldn't regret, because you
learn from your mistakes. But this, I wish I could take back. If you think about it, no one ever
wants to do drugs, unless they're trying to fit in. No one just out of the blue says,' I want to get high.'
I mean, there's always a pressure there, to do them. Thing is, it's so stupid.
There's no point. People say it makes them feel good. Sure it does, but it makes you feel like crap
afterwards. Why put your body through something like that, you know?" He asked.
I nodded my head in understandment.
" So, uh, why are you telling me all this?" I asked, cautiously.
He shrugged and then looked over at me.
" Guess I just wanted someone to hear the truth. Better hearing the truth than believing a lie, right?" He asked.
" Yeah I guess." I answered.
" So, yeah I'm a Christian. You don't necessarily HAVE to go to church to be one or dress a certain
way to be one. Just as long as you have Jesus in your heart, you're all good." He said, smiling.
I shook my head a little.
" But, how do you know God is there? I mean, He's not real. I've never seen Him." I pointed out.
He shook his head.
" Another lie you believe. But that's okay, I don't judge you. But would you rather know the truth
or believe a lie?" He asked.
" Know the truth." I said, as if it were obvious.
" Okay, so I'm going to tell you the truth." He said in a matter of fact tone.
Who knew that someone like Rodney could be so, so, nice?
Different?

CHAPTER 31
" Soo, How do you know God is real?" I asked again.
" You don't." He said in a matter of fact way.
I was about to say something but he continued.
" It's all about having faith." He said.
" Faith?" I asked. " Isn't it the same thing as hope?"
" No. Hope is like, wishing for something. Faith, is believing in something, even
though it may not exist, or not sure it'll happen or something. You start to believe
in God once you start reading the Bible. I'm not talking about a few sentences or anything.
Like, if you REALLY read it, you start to understand it and develop that relationship with Him.
I quote, from that one movie, something about walking, ' It's like the wind. You can't see it,but you can feel it.'' He said.
" A Walk To Remember." I stated.
" Yeah that's it!" He exclaimed.
" You actually watched that?" I asked.
" Yeah. Alissa had me watch it with her when she was sick." He laughed.
" Maybe she liked you." I pointed out.
" maybe." He shrugged.
I wondered about what he had said for a little bit before I brought it up again.
" What if you don't have faith?" I asked.
" Well, everyone has faith." He corrected.
I looked at him, confused.
" When you go to your car and you put the keys in the ignition, do you have faith that it will
start?" He asked.
" Well, yeah. But it's supposed to because I put the keys in it. Unless something is wrong under
the hood." I said.
" Yeah but, you're expecting." He said.
" Yeaahh." I said, not getting it.
" Say your mom tells you that she's going to be home at 3:00. You expect her to be home by
3:00. So, are you not having faith that she'll keep her word?" He asked.
" Yeah, I get it now." I said, wanting to get off of this subject.
It wasn't that he was challenging me or anything. He didn't make me feel stupid.
It's that I just, didn't feel like talking about God and Faith and religious stuff, or what he calls
" spiritual.''
I guess he noticed, so he got quiet and didn't seem bothered when I shut down.
I looked over to the side not too far from us, where there was another little bonfire.
There were kids huddled around it and an old woman sitting in a chair.
She was hushing them, and they all got quiet.
" Story time" Rodney said, getting up from his spot on the sand.
He held out his hand and I took it.
His hand was hot under mine as he helped me get up.
As soon as I was up, he let go.
I brushed off all the sand from my pants and walked with him to the bonfire,
and we sat back down on the sand, listening to the story that the lady was about to begin.
There was no point in wiping the sand off. I thought.
The lady began the story, but I couldn't understand a word since it was all in Hawaiian.
" I'll translate." Rodney stated.
" Love and Time." Rodney began, after the woman had said it.
"Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and
all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink,
so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,
"Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her."
I looked at Rodney in my peripheral vision.
He was still reciting the story, looking at the elder woman.
All the times that I had seen him, he looked intimidating.
Now, sitting right in front of the fire with the light glowing on him, he looked....Gorgeous.
There was nothing intimidating about him whatsoever.
There was a slight smile in his lips as he spoke, and even though his eyes looked totally black
because it was dark out and he had brown eyes, there was something in them that just
grabbed your attention and sucked you in. Compassion? Love?
Maybe I'm just getting emotional. I told myself.
I looked over at all the kids who seemed so into the story, that a sonic boom could occur
and they wouldn't flinch.
"Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love
even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way.
Realizing how much was owed the elder,
Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."
There was a round of applause from the kids as they clapped and cheered when the
story ended. Rodney and I clapped with them and I couldn't help but smile.
" You hungry?" He asked.
" oh yeah. I totally forgot about eating." I said, getting up and dusting off my pants.
On our way to the other bonfire, I pondered about the story that the lady had said.
It certainly had given me the chills, that's for sure.
Not like someone just told you a scary story and you got goosebumps.
It was....a good chill.
As we approached the bonfire, I caught Tiffany's eye and her mouth fell open.
The drink she was holding tipped over and if spilt onto the sand.
I held back a laugh and then met her gaze again.
This time, it wasn't just surprise in her eyes.
The other look, was something I couldn't decipher.

Sorry it's short. Don't worry. The next one will be long.
CHAPTER 32
James was talking to Tiffany and followed her gaze towards me.
His expression was shock, that then faded.
I was too nervous to go talk to them, so I kept following Rodney's lead.
The food seemed to be enough for a whole army!
I made my plate with chicken that had some kind of sauce on it
and had Mahi-Mahi.
" That's it?" He asked me, staring at the plate I had in my hands.
"Uh, yeah. I guess." I said.
He just shook his head, fighting back a smile.
" What?" I asked, smiling.
He shook his head again, smiling a real smile this time.
I tried not to blush or show that it knocked the breath out of me, so I quickly
took a gulp of my raspberry tea.
" I just, I don't know. Guess I'm just trying to be healthy." I answered.
He let out a short laugh.
" What?" I asked.
" Look at your plate. You barely have anything on it. And...it's all nonfat." He said.
" Uh, chicken has fat on it." I said in defense.
" Okay. Whatever you say." He said.
His plate had fish, rice, fruit, and some other stuff that I didn't know.
I took a little peek over at Tiffany and James, who were still looking at us, with
the same shocked expressions.
I'll have to explain it to her later. I thought in my head as Rodney and I went back
to the fire where the kids were still listening to stories.
" Hey do you wanna go for a walk?" He asked.
" With plates in our hands?" I asked.
" Yeah. It'll be fine. Nothing like eating your food and exercising at the same time.
Good way to shed off the pounds right when you're eating them." He teased.
I knew he was making fun of how I thought I should eat healthy to stay fit.
I rolled my eyes.
" Sure." I said.

CHAPTER 33
" So tell me about yourself." Rodney said, taking a bite of his food.
I thought for a moment, trying to think of something worth telling.
" There's not much to say. I mean, nothing compared to you." I answered.
I've never experienced anything like Rodney did.
I never got into drugs, alcohol, or partying.
Life with my family was, I don't know, okay?
There was never any arguing or fights and if there was, it would only last
for about an hour because my parents would talk about it.
I guess you could say we're very family-oriented.
" Oh come on. I'm sure there's something about you that you could say.It
doesn't have to be bad. It can be like, your favorite color or something." He
said, shrugging his shoulders.
" My favorite color is blue, uh, I hate heavy metal. uh, love the jonas brothers.."
" Wait." Rodney said, cutting me off.
" You...like...them?" He asked, incredulously.
" Yeah the jobros are awesome!" I defended.
He shook his head, with his nose scrunched up as if he smelt something bad.
" You even made a nickname for them? Wow. You're brainwashed." He said.
I laughed at that.
" That's something us fans came up with and what's wrong with them?" I asked.
He shook his head again.
" No offense, but, they sound like girls. I mean, one sounds like he's whining. I mean, a little kid could sing like that. Then there's
that one with the hair. What's up with the straightened hair?
Then, that one guy, I think he's the oldest? He has to be gay."
Rodney confessed.
" Kevin isn't gay!! None of them are! And that's their voice! They're better than britney spears!" I defended, laughing a little at the end.
I didn't want him to seem offended that I got defensive over the Jonas Brothers.
" Actually, I'd rather hear britney spears than those guys." Rodney said.
I shook my head and took a sip of my raspberry tea.
" So what music do you listen to?" I asked.
" Depends on my mood. I listen to everything. Christian, Alternative, Rock, Country, Bluegrass,Jazz. Everything. Except metal. I can't handle that." He said.
I took all of this in, thinking back on the day that I assumed heavy metal was all he listened to.
" That's cool." I said, taking a bite of whatever food I got.
" I'll have to lend you some cd's, and show you some real music." Rodney said, seriously.
" Fine. Same here." I said.
He glanced over at me, but I stared straight ahead.
he's probably cautious about it. He's probably thinking i'm goint to torture him with jonas brothers. I thought smugly.
I didn't even notice, but we had been walking for thirty minutes.
" You ready to go back?" He asked.
" Sure." I answered.
We turned around and made our way back to the fires, where
everyone else was.
I have to admit, I was bit nervous going back to the fires.
That meant I had to face Tiffany and everyone else.[/COLOR]

CHAPTER 34
SO, Pretty much the whole time I was there at the 'Luau', I was with Rodney.
I got to know him more, and he's a pretty decent guy.
Okay, that was an understatement.
He's like a Prince Charming.
A guy that any girl would want.
I was too chicken to go hang out with everyone else, that I just stayed with Rodney.
We listened to more of the stories that the woman was telling, and around
two in the morning, we went home.
Jake and Josh were hammering me with questions.
" So, what did you guys do?" Jake asked, popping the first question.
" We just listened to stories, walked along the beach, and talked." I said.
" What'd you guys talk about?" Jake asked.
Josh bumped him on the head.
" Oww!" Jake said, rubbing the spot that had been plunked.
" Dude, not cool." Josh said. " THough, I am a little curious." Josh said, rubbing his chin.
" Just talked about life and stuff." I said.
They were both quiet for a while, looking at me as if questioning my sanity.
" I don't know. But the guy gives me the creeps." Jake said, flopping back down in his seat
in the car.
We were driving back home, and so far, I was exactly engaged in the conversation that
I had been trying to avoid all night.
" He's a really nice guy. He's really cool and fun to be around." I defended.
" Alright. That's cool. Just, be careful." Josh said, staring at me with warning in his eyes.
They only know him by his past. I thought.
I started to wonder why they still thought Rodney was still his old self.
I mean, it was just four years ago that Rodney had accepted Christ, or whoever the guy is.
Why would they still hold his past against him? Why would they say he's still doing drugs and
going to parties? It didn't make sense.
I decided to ignore the thought, thinking I was overreacting and analyzing too much.
As soon as we got home, I took a quick fifteen minute shower and went to bed.
Two doors opened in front of me. Tons of people were in seats,
on the left and the right, looking at me.
I was walking down an aisle and made my way to the front. There was a preacher there with
a bible in his hands, smiling at me. I looked at him, confused. I then looked to my right, and
saw Rodney in a tux, smiling at me.
I jolted upright, out of bed, gasping.
Realizing it was a dream, I let out a sigh and lay back down, resting my head on the pillow.
" What a nightmare." I mumbled to myself.
Clearly, I was getting too emotional of this guy.
After about what seemed like an hour, I was finally able to fall back asleep.
When I woke up in the morning to the alarm sounding at eight in the morning, I slammed my
hand on the snooze button, wanting to go back to sleep.
It was the start of a new day, and I was feeling groggy.
Maybe I should just stay home and sleep. I thought.
Just then, I realized, that in two more days, my best friend Lalaine would be here.
The excitement of her coming to Hawaii for the first time, and us being together, got
me awake in a jiffy.
I got dressed, combed my hair, brushed my teeth, and got on my cousin's bike, heading
to the shack to work.

CHAPTER 35
As soon as I walked through the door, Tiffany looked up at me from handing a customer
her change back, with a smile on her face. The customer walked off with a smoothie in
her hand, to one of the booths where her boyfriend was.
" So, how's the new boyfriend?" Tiffany asked.
I walked behind the counter, putting my purse in the back in the top cupboard.
I put my polo shirt on that said The Sun, The Moon, and The Stars in hawaiian, over
my mustard yellow tank top.
" No, he's not my boyfriend. We're just friends." I said, grabbing my name tag out of the little drawer in the cupboard. I put it on, and walked up to the front, at the cash register where
Tiffany was.
" I'll take over." I said, taking her place as she walked to the back.
" Well, you may not be going out now, but I saw those sparks last night.
It might have been dark, but I could still see your cheeks bright red." She stated.
I blushed right then, listening to her say that.
" You're delusional." I said, laughing.
" I know attraction between two people when I see it." She said, matter of factly.
She returned, standing by me, with a smirk on her face.
" What?" I asked, trying to fight back a smile.
She shrugged her shoulders with a knowing smile and walked to the entrance doors.
" I'll see you in an hour." She said, putting her sunglasses on and walking out the door for
her break.
I shook my head with a smile and started cleaning up some.
The entrance doors opened and I saw an all too familiar face, though it's weird.
I had only seen him once.
" Hey." He said, cooly.
" Hey." I replied, feeling a little nervous.
Not the kind of nervous you get when you like someone, but the feeling you get
when you know something is going to happen. Wether it's bad or good, it's always
a surprise. " What can I get you?" I asked, trying not to show fear.
" I'll have a mango lassie." Chad answered.
I took the money and put it in the register, and handing him his receipt.
" You doing anything tonight?" He asked.
I tried to come up with an excuse, but nothing came to my mind.
Why do I feel so nervous and scared? I'm just judging this guy. He's probably not
a bad guy at all. I thought, recalling that night when Rodney told me that he wasn't
good. He didn't seem bad, just his ego.
" No." I answered, turning my back and walking to the blender to work on his drink.
" My friends are having a kickback at their place. You want to go?" He asked.
From what it seemed, it sounded like it was just a time to relax and chill.
Little did I know, I was getting myself into something that I would regret going to later,
had I known what a kickback was.
" Sure." I said.
I finished blending the drink and gave it to him.
" Alright. When do you get off work?" He asked.
" Around six." I said.
" Alright cool. I'll be here at six then." He said, turning around and heading to the doors.
Before he walked out, he flashed me a brilliant smile, and left.
" Oy." I said to myself.

CHAPTER 36
About an hour later, James, Jake, and Matt came in with their hair all wet.
" You guys go out in the ocean every day huh?" I asked.
" Pretty much." James answered, with a smile.
" It doesn't ever get old? Or boring?"
" No way! It's so much fun! I mean, there's no feeling in the world like the ocean!" Jake
exclaimed excitedly.
" What can I get you guys?" I asked.
" uh, the green drink." Jake answered.
I stared at him with a blank and confused expression, but suspicious of why he chose
something that wasn't part of his one and only food group, sugar.
" Uh, I don't think you're going to like green drink." I said, imagining all the lettuce,
spinach, celery, and mint all blended together. I had tried it once before when my mom
made it. She was in her 'healthy' stage, which didn't work out too
well with my dad and I.We would sneak out of the house and go
get pizza or something that didn't involve tofu and greens.
" Ashley isn't here." Matt pointed out.
" I know that. But I heard she likes green-eyed guys, and I heard green drink makes your eyes turn green, so, I'm drinking the stuff." Jake answered.
" That only works for some people and why are you trying so hard to get a girl's attention?" I asked.
" Cuz she's awesome." Jake answered. " And I will be one of those people.
Should I get green contacts?"
" awesome in what ways?" I challenged.
" She's pretty, likes the same stuff as me as in surfing, skateboarding, fishing." He answered.
" She's a tomboy?" I guessed.
" I guess so. In a way. She looks like a girl." He said.
" Well duh she looks like a girl. She IS a girl." Matt said.
" I mean, she dresses like a girly girl and does girl things too. She's not always pink like
legally blonde. And...she likes guy stuff like football too." Jake corrected, and impressed.
" Huh. SO why hasn't she noticed you?" I asked.
" She has. Yesterday when she dropped her book, he picked it up for her.
She said thank you, but he stood there, speechless. I don't blame her for walking away,
cuz he looked like an idiot." Matt said, chuckling at this.
" Thanks for the reminder." Jake said, sarcastic.
" Do you know if she likes you back?" I asked.
" No.'' Jake answered, sounding hopeless as he flopped onto the stool.
" Well try to walk to her. Ask her if she and her friends, and you and your friends can all
go do something, so it's not akward. Or you can go ask her on a date." I said.
" Alright." Jake said, hope filling his eyes.
Jake and Matt ran out the door and onto the beach.
" So, uh, how did you like the 'Luau' last night?" James asked innocently, but with suspicion
clear in his eyes.
This whole time, from last night to right now, he was probably trying to gather up the courage
to ask me about Rodney. It sure sounded like it. I could tell he was a bit embarrassed about
asking, but too curious to pass it up.
" It was cool. I mean, that lady sure can tell stories. The kids were cute, food was good.
But, staying up that late was hard." I answered.
" Yeah they're pretty cool." He stated.
There was an akward silence in the air for about five seconds.
" So uh, you were with Rodney." He stated.
" Yep."
" How is he?" He asked.
I looked up at James, shocked.
James knew Rodney?
The question was more of concern for someone who was in the hospital.
" He's fine. Great actually." I said, a little suspicious.
" That's good." James said.
" What do you mean, how is he?" I asked.
James didn't say anything. He was about to, but the entrance doors opened and Matt and Jake
came running in.
" SHE SAID YES!!" Jake exclaimed, excited like he had proposed to the girl and she accepted
Oh God. I hope he didn't propose. I thought.
" You didn't propose to her did you?" I asked.
" NO, of course not." Jake said. " I asked her out on a date!"
" Cool! Where you going?" James asked, excited.
" The movies. Tonight. At seven." Jake answered.
" Cool. Remember, rated G." James said, laughing.
" Oh please. I'm fourteen, well, almost fifteen." Jake said.
" Well come on. Let's go surfing before all the good waves give up." Matt said.
The invitation was to both Jake, and James.
They all bustled out of the shack, excited, onto the beach.
The conversation that James and I was now, finished, but untold.
What did he mean? I thought in my head.

CHAPTER 37
I was trying to decipher what James meant, asking myself questions.
How did he know Rodney? Why is it that if they knew each other, they don't know
each other now? What is the story?
There was an aching in my stomach to get to the bottom of the story.
I wanted to know what was going on.
The phrase curiosity killed the cat ran through my mind.
Why does it bother me so much? Gosh I'm an idiot. I thought to myself.
I decided to go on a break and just clear up my mind.
I'm overreacting over something that isn't even my business. I corrected myself,
trying to knock some sense into me.
Rodney never came that day.
I was beginning to worry that something had happened.
Maybe he found out that I knew something and didn't want to see me. Oh my gosh.
Here I go again. I thought to myself, getting frustrated.
I decided to close early, and most people came during the day, so business wasn't that
good at night.
It was 5:45 that I started locking everything.
I heard a knock at the entrance doors and saw Chad there, waving.
I walked over to the doors from locking the register, and let him in.
" Hey you ready?" He asked, a little anxious.
" Yeah. Just let me get my purse." I said, walking to the back counter and getting my purse.
I turned around to look at everything, getting a survey of everything, calculating in my head
all that I had locked. As soon as I was sure that I had locked everything and cleaned up, I
headed out the doors with Chad.
I had called Josh earlier, telling him that I'd be home later.
He didn't answer, since he was in school, so I left a message and he had never called me back.
I figured he didn't have to. What's the point in him calling me back and saying,''okay?''
Chad opened the passenger door for me to his cherry red 1965 fastback, ford mustang.
" Nice." I said, sliding into the seat.
" Yeah. Worked on it over the summer." He said, proud.
He got into the driver's side and started the engine.
He didn't bother putting on his seatbelt, but I did with mine.
We drove on, into a different neighborhood that took about twenty minutes to get to
and we arrived at a house.
The lights were on in it, cars parked in the driveway, along the streets, and people on the
front lawn carrying drinks and chatting away.
Chad parked along the curb and we got out, walking up the main walk to the house.
I could hear the music blaring from inside and saw many things at once.
Couples making out up against the wall, on the couch, people playing pool, and a smell
that I had never smelt before. It was like smoke, but not cigarette smoke.
As we walked further into the house, I noticed three guys sitting at a table with something
in front of them, and that's when I saw that it was marijuana.
Beer cans were all over the place, along with paper plates to pizza.
People were dancing, talking, making out, drinking, or smoking.
This, was definitely not what I pictured when he said kickback.
That's when I figured out that when he said 'kickback,' he meant A KICKBACK, which was a party
somewhere at someone's house maybe, in which you get high, drunk, and whatever else pleases you.
" You want a drink?" Chad asked, offering me a blue paper cup.
I didn't have to look at it to know what it was.
" No thanks. I don't drink." I said, feeling uncomfortable.
He shrugged his shoulders and drank from it.
I didn't miss it in his eyes, but by the look in them, I had hurt his ego.
I take it he usually dates girls who party and act like idiots. I thought to myself.
" Come on. I'll show you the tour of the place." He said, putting his arm around my shoulder
as we walked to the backyard.
I saw a bunch of people in a swimming pool, that looked to be heated.
There was also a hot tub, a basket ball court, a little bungalow type thing where a few girls
were, drinking they're beer or some mixed alcoholic drink, chatting away, on lounged seats.
One of them was smoking a cigarette.
I was too much of a coward to say no, so I stayed when I should have left.
Sure, it looked cool. But it only looked cool because society says its cool.
But really, doing all this drugs, smoking, and drinking, was like committing suicide,
except a slow death. I had friends back at my school who were so innocent, and didn't seem
like the type that would get into all this stuff, but they did. I've seen what it does to people.
How they act afterwards compared to how they acted before they started drugs and all the
partying. They start to live for other people, and become a slave to the drug. They don't realize
it now, but later in life, they'll regret it.
" Alright. Now for the inside of the house." He said.
We walked back inside and while he showed me the game room, he started asking me questions.
" So, you just moved here?" He asked.
" No. Visiting." I answered.
" Aww that's a shame. I'll never see you again, unless you visit often." He said, flirting a bit.
I'm not sure if most girls would be flattered by this, coming from a cute guy who was probably
popular, but I wasn't.
" Yeah..too bad." I said, not really caring.
" What stuff you into?" He asked.
" Like, music, sports, type stuff?" I asked.
He nodded, taking a gulp of his beer.
" Anything but heavy metal and rap. Uh, I like swimming." I answered.
" That's cool. I'm on the swim team." He answered, taking a cigarette that was offered to him.
Just looking at him, I couldn't see how that was possible.
" Want one?" He asked.
" No thanks. Don't smoke." I answered.
" Don't tell me. You're one of those goody too shoes huh?" He asked.
" I don't know. I guess. I'm not perfect if that's what you're implying." I answered.
He shrugged his shoulders, letting out a puff of smoke.
" Hey Chadster! I haven't seen you in forever man!" Some guy bellowed from across the room.
" Oh hey Brody!" Chad yelled, getting up and walking over to him.
They started chatting away, and I was left there, by myself, in a place that was not so good.
I surveyed the room, and didn't know anyone, of course.
I observed everyone there, watching two girls bicker about some drama that happened,
guys talking about some hot girl, people taking their hits, and then I came across a table
in the kitchen, with four guys in the booth. As soon as my eyes came across him, my breathing
stopped. Everything inside me froze. I couldn't think, or move. Butterflies rose in my stomach,
as they do every time I saw him. It must be the sixth sense, or seventh sense or something,
because when you feel a stare on you, you look up and meet the gaze of that person, and then
they quickly look away. But this, this stare in the familiar brown eyes that shouldn't be familiar at
all, looked directly at me when he felt my gaze. I looked into the angry eyes of Rodney.

Sorry it's short. I was going to go with something else in this chapter, but
found it too pg-13 to put up.
I figured I would tell it in a different way, that's
coming up in the next chapter.
CHAPTER 38
My heart stopped and I could tell that fear was shown on my face because I was feeling
it right now. Everything seemed to stop. The whole world seemed to be frozen and the only
people in this house were Rodney and I. I couldn't hear the people around me or the music
blaring with the people dancing. I couldn't even smell the smoke anymore. Everything seemed
to dissolve. I kept looking into his eyes, feeling scared, for whatever reason, I didn't know.
Just when I thought things couldn't get worse, a guy who was stumbling from being drunk,
bumped into me, spilling his beer all over my shirt.
" Agh!" I screeched, feeling the cold liquid moist my shirt, a few ice cubes went down my shirt,
along with falling all over the floor.
The smell was already coming.
" Oh. My bad. I'm ssorry." He mumbled, slurring his words a little.
He made his way to the other room, bumping into the wall and causing a whole bunch
of people to laugh at him.
I looked at Chad who was still talking to those guys, forgetting I was even there.
Then, I glanced over at the booth where Rodney was, but he wasn't there.
Just then I felt a hand on my shoulder.
I turned sharply to see Rodney standing there, eyes still full of frustration.
" What are you doing here?" He asked, sounding a little rude.
" I, Chad invited me." I said, feeling nervous.
The words stumbled out of my mouth a little too fast.
Rodney looked over at Chad.
" You came with him?" He asked.
" Yeah." I answered. " I know you warned me..."
" Let me guess. He's giving you the grand tour right?" Rodney interrupted.
" Uh yeah." I answered, confused.
Rodney shook his head.
" You need to get out of here." He stated.
" I came with Chad." I said, realizing that I didn't have a car to leave on my own, unless
I wanted to walk for about an hour.
" I'll take you home." Rodney said, putting his hand on my shoulder and pushing me out of the room and towards the front doors.
He kept a fast pace as we walked to his car, with which I had a hard time keeping up.
When we got to the car, he quickly opened the door for me and practically pushed me into the
passenger seat. He closed the door behind me and got into his side of the car, putting the key
into the ignition and brought the engine to life.
It was silent as we drove.
It reminded me of the night when Rodney had found me in the forest and drove me home,
with the same silence and tension in the truck, as it was now in his car.

CHAPTER 39
The butterflies in my stomach were flopping all over the place.
I was pretty sure that if I opened my mouth to speak, butterflies would literally
fly out. Maybe that was the way to get rid of the feeling. To just get rid of this horrible
feeling I had.
I was too afraid to look at him, or to even talk, so I just stared out the window at the trees
blurring past us.
" I'm going to stop at my house so you can get cleaned up." He said, a little tense.
I turned my head to face him, confused.
" What?" I asked.
" You smell like alcohol. Yushi would be pissed." He said, looking over at me.
I quickly looked away once I met his gaze.
" Oh, yeah. I forgot about that." I said, looking down at my shirt.
Out of all that happened, I forgot about the guy spilling his drink all over me.
" So..." I began, but he cut me off.
" If I didn't get you out of there, he would have finished the rest of the '' tour'' and led you to the
last part of it, the bedroom. And you could only guess where that would lead to." Rodney stated,
already knowing I was going to ask about it.
I nodded my head, feeling queezy again.
We drove in silence for ten minutes, and then we got to his house.
It was a two story with a porch. There were palm trees, potted plants by the driveway,
and it looked like it was all wood. Nothing but wood.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h263/essyiknow/house.jpg
It looked so beautiful with the lights on in the house to light it up in the night.
I could only imagine what it looked like during the day.
There were toys on the front lawn along with a basket ball goal.
" Wow." I stated.
He didn't respond.
He got out of the truck and was going to come on my side to open the passenger door
for me, but I had already opened it.
I wasn't used to people opening doors and closing them for me, so, I was always the first one
to do that job out of habit.
Same thing with taking compliments. I don't know how to receive compliments without
blushing red, hiding a smile, and feeling embarrassed.
It's not that I didn't appreciate the compliment, it just felt weird getting attention.
He led the way through the garage and opened the door, leading us into the kitchen.
" Home." He stated, closing the door behind me when I walked in.
The place was furnished like an exotic escape.
The kitchen had wooden cupboards of dark oak and a marble or granite top, with a tan, tiled
floor. There was a mini surf board hanging on the wall over the sink that said," If you don't like it,
deal with it,'' on it.
I figured it was something a cook would say.
Fake palm trees were in the living room with a sandy brown sofa and armchair.
There was a palm tree leaf rug about twenty feet long in the living room with which the
coffee table was on, with a leaf pattern carved into the wood.
There was a conch shell on the coffee table with little pieces of sea glass in a bowl there,
serving as decoration. The sea glass was a mix of green, clear-white, and blue.
" Come on up here." He said, as I was looking at the place in awe.
There was no answer back from when he called to his foster mom, I guessed, so I followed
him up the carpeted stairs.
The railing was of smooth, wood, obviously glossed or whatever they did to it to make it that way.
There was a hallway that we walked through.
Two doors on the left, three doors on the right, and one straight ahead.
Rodney led the way down the hallway to the door, straight ahead.
When he turned the knob, opening the door and walking in, I stayed where I was at it's entrance.
He had a waterbed, a black desk with a computer and screen and a closet with his little supply
of clothes, and a picture of a woman, little girl, and him on his desk.
They were sitting in front of a waterfall, smiles on their faces, in the bright sunlight.
The little girl had brown hair and hazel eyes. The woman had black hair, olive skin, and green eyes. She looked absolutely stunning.
Then I looked at the other picture on his desk.
My heart felt like it leaped out of it's chest because when I looked at the blonde girl with blue eyes, smiling in the picture, I felt spooked.
It was weird.
Instantly I knew that it was his friend from middle and high school that had died a horrible death.
In a way, she looked like me.
Fair skin, no acne or zits, blue eyes and natural bleach blonde hair.
Rodney was shuffling stuff around in his drawer until he came across something, pulled it out and
handed it to me.
When I stared at him blankly and finally took it, I noticed it was a gray shirt with a flower print on
it. It looked so fashionable and a little urban looking. Like something from a catalog for Forever21. Underneath the shirt was a
pair of light blue jean shorts, with a little fringe on them.
" They were Alissa's. I know. Weird having her clothes. It was her favorite outfit. Wore it almost
all the time. It's, two of the few things I have left of her." He said.
I could tell that he choked up a little at the end.
I tried not to show on my face that I had noticed it or the fact that I felt uncomfortable wearing
some dead girl's clothes. Not that I have anything against her or have no respect for her, it just,
felt weird.
Rodney walked past me and opened up the hall closet, retrieving a towel and washcloth.
" Here you go." He said, handing them to me.
I took them from him and he walked a little down the hall and to the right, opened the door to the
bathroom.
" Oh, the hot water runs out fast." He pointed out.
" Okay. Thank you." I said.
" No problem."
I walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind me and undressed.
I turned on the hot water and got in.
When I was done, I got changed back into my bra and underwear, since those weren't dirty, and then got into Alissa's shirt and shorts.
They fit perfectly.
I pulled my hair into a bun, with my hair still wet, and walked out the door with my clothes in hand.

CHAPTER 40
Before I entered his room, I knocked on it four times.
The door was already open, but I figured I'd knock.
" Hey." He said, looking at his computer screen.
I saw that as an ''okay'' to come in, and stood in the middle of his room, looking at everything.
" Cool skateboards....you skate much?" I asked, looking back over at him.
When I caught his expression, my body froze.
It looked as if he had seen a ghost.
He just kept staring and finally turned his head back to the screen.
" Sorry. Uh, yeah. I board a lot." He answered.
" What?" I asked, thinking that I did something wrong.
" Sorry. I just got a little surprised. You look like Alissa a little. Not at all really.
Just the eyes and hair are the same, but, with the clothes, you look like her." He stated, sounding nervous.
" Oh. Okay." I smiled, feeling weird.
I didn't know what to say to all that.
" I should get you home." Rodney said abruptly, getting up from his desk.
He got his keys off of his dresser and led the way out of his room, and closing the door after
we both walked out.
Rodney locked the garage door behind us and walked with me to the passenger side.
As always, he opened the door for me just like a gentleman.
I smiled at the thought while getting in and buckling my seat belt.

CHAPTER 41
He pulled out of the driveway and drove down the street, taking a left, and drove down to the freeway. It felt weird being in Alissa's clothes, and looking like her. Does he see me as Alissa now? Or has he
always seen me as Alissa? Maybe that was the only reason why he
started to talk to me, because I was the only person
that looked like her. The only one that could make him
feel like she was here again. He had been someone who
kept to himself all the time...and when we started hanging
out...every one was always in shock.
I decided to shut my brain up, trying to focus on something else.
I didn't know what he was thinking or how he felt and all
I was doing was jumping to conclusions.
" Thank you again. For getting me out of there and letting me borrow Alissa's clothes." I said,
feeling a little nervous.
I don't know why I was though.
" You're welcome. And for the future...don't go to another party...well...a party like that. Just keep it the old-fashioned way. Birthday
parties and stuff like that." Rodney added with a little laugh.
I nodded my head and leaned my head back to the head rest, closing my eyes.I didn't realize how tired I was.
I started to think about the party, everything that was going
on there, and remembering Rodney being there.
Curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to ask.
" Why were you there?" I asked rather shyly.
" I was talking with some of my old friends, trying to give them some wisdom. You know, telling them what a waste of their life that they're
spending, doing drugs and drinking.
Ministering to them, I guess you could say." Rodney answered.
I nodded my head and before I knew it, we were at Yushi's.
The lights were on and it was only ten. Not past my curfew.
" Thanks again." I said, opening the passenger door.
" You're welcome...again. I'll walk you to the door." Rodney said.
It wasn't something that I was used to so I just said okay, and
walked with him to the door.
Truthfully, I didn't see what the point was for a guy to walk a
girl to the door, say bye, and walk
right back to the car. I could understand if it was a date and
the guy wanted to walk her back to the door to give her a
kiss goodnight, but, other than that, it was weird.
" What are you doing Saturday?" Rodney asked, when we got to the door.
" Uh, not sure. Tomorrow, is Friday. My friend from California is flying in. We'll be picking her up
tomorrow, and I guess Saturday we'll be doing...I don't know what." I answered, laughing a little.
No doubt, Lallaine would be wanting to do and see everything in Hawaii in one day.
She was always adventerous, wild, and up for trying anything new.
" Would you two be interested in going to a concert Saturday?" Rodney asked.
Again, as always, no problem with confidence.
He was down to the point, confident, bold, and down-to-earth.
He always says it like it is, and a truthful person.
If you ask a question, he'll tell you the truth, wether you like it or not.
" Yeah that'd be cool! What concert?" I asked.
" I don't know. Some free concert that's here. But, be ready to wake up early so we can get a good
spot." He said.
" How early?" I asked, dreading the idea of having to get up at an unwanted time.
" Five."
" Five?!"
" Yep. We'll leave around five thirty. Sound good?" He asked.
" Yeah." I nodded.
He let out a laugh.
" Not a morning person, I'm guessing." He said, smiling, not convinced.
" Nope." I admitted, shaking my head.
" Alright. Well, go to sleep early then. See you tomorrow." He said, waving as he walked back to his car.
For someone so incredibly gorgeous, I couldn't see how he didn't have a girlfriend. Maybe he did a while back, but, you never know.
I went inside the house, going up the stairs two steps at a time and went into the game room, knowing that Josh and Jake would be
in there, playing video games.
" Hey what's up?" Josh asked, not even looking away from the tv screen.
They were playing some race car game and Josh was winning.
" Not much." I answered.
" What'd you do?" He asked, not really sounding interested
but you could tell he was, he was just too into his game at the moment.
" Got off of work and went to a party." I stated truthfully.
I didn't want to lie, even though I could.
But I remembered what Rodney had told me in a conversation.
Once you tell a lie, you'll have to tell another lie. What seems like
a little white lie, really isn't. Eventually you get so used to lying, that
there's no such thing as a big lie.
He paused the game after I said Party.
" huh?"
" A party. That guy Chad had-"
" Chad?! You went out with him?" He asked, surprised.
" yeah. I did. I had no idea what it was though. He said kickback, and I didn't know it was some place where you get high and wasted and all the other stuff. But, Rodney saw me and got me out of there." I said.
" That's nice of him." Josh said, thoughtful.
" Yeah. Rodney was there, ministering to his friends." I said, feeling weird saying it.
Josh and Jake both looked at me, surprised.
" You guys don't know he's a christian?" I asked.
They both shook their heads, still full of shock, but their
faces fell to disbelief.
" Uh, yeah. He got saved or whatever it is you guys call it about two years ago? Something like that. He's always talking about God..it's kinda weird." I said.
I looked at them, waiting for them to say something. but no words came out of their mouths.
They were still shocked.
They're facial expressions were so funny, I couldn't help but laugh.
" You guys are funny. I'm going to take a shower. Oh, don't forget, Lalaine's flight comes in at
eight in the morning tomorrow." I said, leaving the room and going to mine.
" K." Was all they said, going back to their video games.
While I took my shower, I started to think back on that day when James asked me how Rodney was and the way he had said it, like he knew him.
They had to have been friends. I thought in my head.
It still remained a mystery....

CHAPTER 42
The sound of my alarm clock woke me at six in the morning. I had exactly thirty minutes to
get ready so we could all drive to the airport, so we could get there by seven-thirty.
I had taken my shower last night so I wouldn't have to worry about one this morning.
I got dressed in my blue jeans, ugg boots, plain white t-shirt and a jacket.
Too lazy to do anything with my hair, I combed through it real quick and put it in a sloppy bun.
As I raced down the stairs, Josh and Yushi were already down there, drinking their early cup
of coffee.
" Morning." I said, as I approached them.
My stomach wasn't ready to eat yet, due to me being up so early at a time that I wasn't used to.
" Morning." They replied in unision.
I took a seat there at the bar, staring blankly at the counter top.
" Not a morning person huh?" Josh asked.
I let out a laugh.
It was the exact question that Rodney had asked me last night.
" Nope. NIght owl all the way." I answered.
Josh shook his head, smiling, then set down his mug.
" Jake let's go!" Josh yelled.
There was still no noise.
" Be right back." Josh said with a smug.
He walked up the stairs and went to Jake's room.
I could hear him opening the door and creeping in, just from down here.
Two minutes later I heard a yell and footsteps pounding down the stairs.
I nearly jumped out of my seat, thinking something bad had happened, but then I saw
Josh laughing.
" What happened?" I asked, surprised.
The response from Jake answered my question.
" Gosh JOsh! Why'd you have to do that?" Jake yelled.
His hair was a mess, in shorts and a t-shirt, that was now soaked with water.
Josh kept laughing.
" That's what you get for pulling that prank on me the other morning. Hurry up. We're going to be late."
Five minutes later, Jake was dressed in his pants, t-shirt, and ready to go.
He still hadn't brushed his hair, but in a way, the messiness of it looked really good.
" Alright ready." Jake said, clomping down the stairs.
We all got into Yushi's car and went on our way to go pick up my friend Lalaine at the airport.
I was so excited for her.
This would be her first time being in Hawaii.
I could already picture her coming off the plane decked out in a hawaiian looking stuff that a
tourist would wear, with a camera in hand, ready to take pictures.
We arrived at the airport and drove into the parking garage, circling around twice until we
found a parking spot.
We all climbed out of his weird car and made our way into the baggage claim area.
" What does she look like?" Josh asked.
" Black hair, wears funky clothes with crazy colors." I answered, standing on my tiptoes to
see over people in front of us.
" Hippie...Hippie? No, that girl looks like a prep," Jake mumbled to himself, looking for Lalaine.
" No, she's not a hippie Jake. But I guess you could say she's a prep." I pointed out.
He shrugged his shoulders and began searching for her again, this time mumbling prep.
" There she is!" I exclaimed, nearly jumping up and down like a five year old.
" Lalaine!" I called, waving my hand in the air.
She was looking in different directions before she spotted me and ran in my direction, dragging
her suitcase behind her.
" FINALLY!" She exclaimed, out of breath.
" How long have you been here?" I asked.
" Ten minutes." She breathed.
I smiled at her, laughing.
" You couldn't wait ten minutes?" I asked.
" NO. Not when some creep is staring at you and winking at you. He's old enough to be my
dad!" She exclaimed.
I couldn't help but laugh. She was always funny.
I looked at her outfit and noticed she was wearing a white laced, mini skirt that flowed like
a gown, brown american eagle flip flops, and a white tank top with silver sequins on it.
Her huge, brown sunglasses were on top of her head and the whole outfit brought out her tan
even more.
" I love your outfit!" I exclaimed.
" Yeah?" She asked, twirling around a little.
" Yeah. What happened to your usual style?" I asked.
" Oh. Yeah, that. I still have that. But I got a little bored. Mondays I wear white, Tuesdays I
wear yellow. Wednesdays I wear all colors at once, Thursday I wear green, Friday I wear whatever,
Saturdays I wear blue, and Sundays I wear purple." She stated.
I stared at her with my eyes wide.
" What?" She asked. " I was kidding."
Both of us laughed like crazy.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned to look at Jake.
" Uh, still here." He said.
" OH! Right! I'm sorry! I totally forgot! Lalaine, this is my Uncle Yushi and my cousins, Josh and Jake.
Uncle Yushi, Jake, Josh, this is my BFFL, Lalaine." I stated, smile across my face.
" Hi." Josh said, giving her a kiss on the cheek and putting a lei over her head.
SHe blushed at that and Jake did the same thing, along with Uncle Yushi.
Her smile went broader.
" Okay kids. Let's go. We have some major sightseeing to do." Uncle Yushi stated.
" Right," Lalaine said, going through her purse and digging in there for what seemed like
two minutes. Finally, she took her hand out, revealing her digital camera.
" Alright I'm ready." She said, turning it on.
We walked out of the airport and went through the parking structure.
Lalaine was talking animatedly at what seemed a hundred miles an hour.
She kept us all in high spirits and had a conversation going the whole drive back to Yushi's.
On our way there, she kept snapping pictures of buildings, random people in their cars on the
highway, the water, and of course, all of us.
While on her quest of getting a pictured of some cute surfers in their car, she nearly dropped
her camera out the car window.
When we arrived to Yushi's, I was beyond exhausted.
Talking for a two and a half hours nonstop can get you pretty tired.
Lalaine was a walking ball of energy and joy. It was rare that you ever saw her sad.
She always finds the positive part of life and of course, she was always crazy.
" So where's your room?" She asked.
" Over here." I said, leading her up the stairwell and into the guest room.
Her jaw dropped and her eyes widened.
" OH....MY....GOSH!" She exclaimed, running and jumping on the bed.
I would have done the same, but my body needed energy.
" This is SO COOL!" She exclaimed, lying down on the bed.
" I know. I had the same reaction to it too when I first got here."
She smiled brightly, looking out at the ocean with the sun beaming inside the room.
" Also, we're going to a concert tomorrow with my.....friend." I said, not knowing what to call
Rodney.
Were we friends? Or more than friends? I thought.
" Uh oh. You paused a little before you said friend, who is he?" She asked, putting her hands
on her hips and talking in a mother-like tone, than laughing.
I couldn't help but laugh either.
" Rodney. I met him here..of course. He invited both of us to go to a concert tomorrow."
" OO, what concert? Is he cute? Do you like him?" She asked, sitting indian style with her
elbows resting on her knees and hands under her chin, with a smile on her face.
" I don't know. He won't tell me and yeah...he's cute. Beyond cute! He's....handsome." I said, smiling .
With Lalaine, you could tell her anything. She wasn't the one to gossip, even though it seemed like
it with her out-going personality. Any secret you told her, was kept safe. Most of the time she forgot, unless it came
to boys or something SUPER personal.
" Does he like you?" She asked, interested.
" I don't think so. It doesn't seem like it." I said.
" Well, I won't go after him...unless of course..he's cute like you said..." She said teasingly.
I shook my head smiling.
" Well let's go to the beach!" I exclaimed, suddenly energetic.
" Alright. Let me change into my swimsuit." she said, hopping off the bed and running to her suitcase.
I went to the drawers and grabbed my swimsuit, going into the bathroom.
" You can hang your stuff in the closet or the drawers. There's plenty of room." I said, closing
the door behind me.
" Okay." She said.

CHAPTER 43
As soon as we were both changed and ready, we went downstairs to go get something to
eat before we went.
" So, where are you two young ladies off to?" Uncle Yushi asked with a crescent smile, teeth as white as the moon.
" The beach. I want to show her some of the sights." I answered, grabbing the bag of chips and
opening them. I opened the refrigerator door and dug around until I found the guacamole.
" Where's Josh and Jake?" I asked, closing the door and walking behind the counter, removing the
lid from the tub.
" They went out surfing." Yushi answered, taking a sip from his coffee.
I nodded my head, nibbling on a chip and looked over at Lalaine, who was looking around.
" OH MY GOSH!" She exclaimed, getting off the stool and skipping to the buffet by the hall closet.
She picked up a picture frame and examined it more closely.
" YOU know HIM?" She asked, holding it up to show Yushi.
Yushi couldn't help but laugh at her sudden abruptness and the way she was so star struck.
" Will Smith? Oh yeah. We're homies." Yushi answered, sipping his coffee with a smile.
" No joke?" She asked.
He shook his head and set the mug down on the counter.
" Nope. I've known him for years. We still hang out today but, I haven't seen him in about a year.
Busy with the filming and all."
Lalaine's eyes went wide as he said this.
After looking at it for a minute, she finally set the picture back down and came back to the bar.
" I always dreamed of marrying him ever since I saw the fresh prince." She sighed.
Yushi let out a laugh.
" No kidding. I met him when he filmed that." Yushi added.
Lalaine smiled.
" You ready to go?" I asked.
" Yeah!" Lalaine exclaimed.
" Alright we should be back before six." I told Yushi.
" No worries. Just as long as you're back before ten and don't get lost I'm fine." He said.
I smiled and we both walked out the door.
" Aww crap. I forgot that I only have one bike." I said.
" No worries. I'll just sit on the front." She said.
I was confused at first until I saw those silver things on the bike where the second person puts
their feet.
Two in the front, an two in the back.
It makes it easier.
We got on, and I pedaled down to the beach.
It's a lot harder than it looks in the movies.
I don't know how people do this stuff.

CHAPTER 44
When we arrived at the cafe, I parked the bicycle in the little railing for it and locked it in.
We walked into the cafe and I was surprised to see so many people in here.
Another surprise, that sent chills running up my arms and butterflies in my stomach,
causing my heart to leap was seeing Rodney sitting there, sipping a smoothie
and listening to his ipod while reading a book.
I was tempted to sneak up behind him and give him a scare, but decided not to.
Instead, I walked behind the counter and called Tiffany.
As soon as she heard my voice, she came out from the back, tray in hand, hair a mess,
and apron dirty.
" THANK GOD you're HERE." She said, moving a piece of hair out of her face by blowing it out
of the way. Only, it fell right back into place.
" PLEASE tell me you can work today." She said, moving her hair strand out of the way with her
hand this time, frustrated with it.
"Sorry. I can't. I just picked up my friend from the airport this morning and I wanted to show
her around a bit. Which is why I came here, so you two could meet." I said, sincere.
If there was anything I hated, it was saying no.
I always felt bad afterwards.
I always felt like I was letting that person down.
Of course, if it came to a guy trying to take advantage of me, I'd do more than say no.
And I wouldn't feel bad about it either.
" Oh okay. Well aloha there. I'm Tiffany." She said, holding out her hand for Lalaine to shake.
" Hey nice to meet you. I love your place. It's cute." Lalaine said, shaking her hand.
" Thanks. It took a lot of work when I first bought this place." Tiffany mused, but not in a conceited way.
" It's real nice. But hey, Cass, I don't mind if you have to work. I can help." Lalaine offered.
I looked at her trying to decipher if she really meant it or because she was trying to help Tiffany
and I out.
" Alright." I said smiling.
" THANK YOU!" Tiffany breathed relieved.
" I'm going to go on my break. I won't be long. The back table over there ordered the special."
Tiffany explained before going to a table and setting the food and drinks a couple ordered on the
round table. She returned behind the counter and took her apron off, hanging it in the little closet in the back.
" Alright I'll see you in an hour. It was really nice to meet you again. See you guys soon!" She exclaimed, rushing out of the cafe.
" She's cool!" Lalaine exclaimed, taking a seat next to Rodney, not even noticing him.
I walked behind the counter and stared at Rodney for a few seconds.
His elbows were on the counter, sunglasses on and dressed in black like always.
The book he was reading must be really good because he seemed to be intrigued by it.
I put my hand over the page and he quickly looked up.
" Oh hey." He said, smiling.
" Hey." I replied. " What are you reading?"
At first I didn't think he had heard me since he had his ear buds in, but he answered.
" The Shack. Awesome book." He answered, setting it down on the counter.
" You're listening to music and reading the book at the same time? How do you do that?" I asked.
" Oh no I'm not listening to anything. I just have them in. Guess it's a habit." He replied, taking
the ear buds out.
" Oh, Rodney, this is my best friend Lalaine." I said, pointing to her.
Lalaine looked up at me and then at Rodney.
Her jaw dropped a little, eyes wide, and her lips formed the perfect ''O.''
" I'm Rodney." He greeted, extending his hand.
Lalaine didn't say anything.
She just kept staring and finally extended her hand to shake his.
"Lalaine." She replied, in a trance.
I studied her face and she didn't seem to blink once.
Oh God. Did I look like that when I first saw him? I thought, thinking back to the first day
that Rodney and I had met.
" Nice to meet you." He said, shaking her hand, looking confused.
" uh huh." She replied blankly, still shaking his hand.
I quickly cleared my throat loudly, which snapped Lalaine out of her little trance, and quickly let
go of Rodney's hand.
I tried to hold back my laughter, but it burst out.
Lalaine looked at me, concern and surprise all over her face.
" You havin' a heart attack or somethin'? " She asked.
The comment made me laugh even harder and I could feel my face burning with red.
I waved my hand mouthing that I was okay, even though it was hard to do when I kept laughing.
Rodney was trying to hold back a smile but you could still see it faintly.
I turned my back and went to the back room, hiding from embarrassment.
As soon as I was composed, I walked back out there.
" Sorry about that." I said.
" No problem. Guess I should be used to it by now." He replied, suppressing a smile.
" yeah dude, sorry about that. It's just, you're so gorgeous." Lalaine said.
I was in the middle of drinking water to help cool me down, but instead of swallowing, it
burst out of my mouth like a volcano erupting.
Lalaine was always outspoken and always stated her opinion wether you liked it or not.
I always told her she could be a stand up comedian.
I should make a reminder to myself that when I'm around her, I should be careful of my timing
of when I eat or drink because I will either end up choking on it or it will fly out of my mouth.
Either way, it's still embarrassing.
" Geez, you're like that big fountain at the Bellagio." Lalaine said.
Rodney let out a laugh.
Lalaine was dabbing at her face with a napkin, face full of disgust.
Most of the time she doesn't take anything seriously but she's always the funniest when she's
serious and mad. Her expressions always get you to laugh.
I thank God for a wonderful friend like her.

CHAPTER 45
" So what do we do now?" I asked, when Tiffany came back from her break.
" I don't know. Let's go see a volcano! You're the expert on that." Lalaine said, smiling.
" I haven't been here that long. Oooo, it's really nice up in the mountains! I went hiking up there once. Do you want to go?" I asked her.
" Hiking?" She asked, face full of disgust and unbeleif.
" Maybe not such a good idea. You got lost that one time...remember?" Rodney challenged.
" Yes I remember. But I was there when it was dark so that doesn't count."
"why would you go THERE in the DARK?" Lalaine asked, shocked.
I was about to say that I was there during the day and lost my way back down when it was starting to get dark, but that would mean Rodney was right, and I didn't want him to get all smug.
" Everything is better at night." I said with a smile.
Rodney smiled a crooked smile and got off his seat.
" I know a place." He said, walking to the doors.
Lalaine's eyes lit up, along with mine.
I quickly took off the apron and hung it on the hook in the closet, said goodbye to Tiffany, and followed Lalaine while Rodney held the door open.
" Thanks." I said.
" No Problem."
We got into his car and we were on our way to an unknown place.

CHAPTER 46
" Where are we going?" I asked.
" You'll see." He replied.
There was no smile on his face like usual, and like usual, he wore
his aviators.
" You'll never guess it." He stated, after the tenth time that the question
was asked by Lalaine and I.
" OKay fine. I give up." I said, looking out the window, reading all the signs
for any possible clue.
I looked over at Rodney from the corner of my eye and saw the corner of
his lips turned up in a faint smile.
I couldn't help but smile any time I saw his smile, or any time that I saw him.
Lalaine fell asleep in the back seat, her head against the window.
" Feel like playing ten questions?" I asked.
" I thought it was twenty questions?" Rodney asked.
" If you want it to go that long." I shrugged.
" Twenty." He stated.
" Okay. I'll go first.....Where are we going?" I asked.
He let out a little laugh, smiling that killer smile and looked over at me.
" Not answering" He answered.
" But it's twenty questions. You have to answer it." I challenged.
" There's rules for asking and answering a question?" He asked.
" For this there is."
" And who made up these rules?"
" I did."
" Of course you did....We're going somewhere fun. How does that answer your question?"
" Fine. Okay your turn."
He was silent for a moment before asking.
" How do you see yourself in the future?" He asked.
" What do you mean?"
" Like...do you see yourself as a doctor? Rich? Famous? Poor? Homeless? And that doesn't count as all my questions."
" I don't know. I see myself traveling." I answered.
" Alright...Where do you want to go?"
" Isn't it my turn?" I asked.
" Not necessarily. I can ask questions back to back as long as it adds up to
twenty and not over. When I'm done asking, it's your turn to interrogate."
" Okay." I answered.
Making up rules I see. I thought.
" So where do you want to go?"
" Rome, Tuscany, Paris, Ireland, Mexico, I don't know....everywhere?" I answered with a laugh.
" Alright. How are you going to get there?" He asked.
" I'll need money, I'll travel by boat, plane, train, car, and any other way of transportation." I answered.
I didn't understand these questions, but I answered them anyway.
" Will you have a family?" He asked.
" I don't know. I've never thought about it." I answered.
There was a silence in the car and then he finally spoke.
" We're here." He said, pulling into a parking lot.
I was so involved in trying to figure out why he was asking those questions, that I didn't even pay attention to all of the roller coasters in front of us.
" Oh God." I said, feeling nervous.
" You scared?" He teased.
" Yeah." I answered, staring at one that had just taken off.
Probably going from 0 to 60 mph in one second.
" Time to get over that fear." He stated, parking in a spot close to the entrance. It was a reserved sign.
" This is reserved spot." I said.
" Oh I'm sure they won't mind." He said, shrugging it off with a smile.
" It says you could get towed."
" Relax. This is my spot." He said with a smile.
" Lalaine wake up." He said.
Lalaine woke up from her sleepy state, blinked her eyes in the brightness, and stared at me.
" OH MY GOSH. I just had this dream that I went to Hawaii and you were there, and this incredibly gorgeous guy-"
" Yeah it's real." I said, just as she saw Rodney coming to my side of the door to open it for me.
" Ohh." She said.
" Yeah."
Rodney opened the door for me and I got out, turning around to pull my seat
forward so Lalaine could get out.
" Oh sweet!! I love coasters!!!" Lalaine exclaimed.
" Sweet!" Rodney said, smiling.
Perfect match. I thought in my head.
Rodney closed the car door and locked it, striding up next to Lalaine and I with a speed that was breathtaking.
He had popped out of nowhere.
" Which one first? The rattler or the Superman?" Lalaine asked.
" Rattler." Rodney stated.
Crap. was the only thing that was repeating in my mind.

CHAPTER 47
We were in line for the Rattler, which had to be the longest line in this whole park. I couldn't imagine any other line in this whole place longer than this. "Impatient?" Rodney asked.
" A little." I answered.
" You want to ride it that badly?" He teased.
" No. I just hate lines." I admitted.
" Same." He answered.
Lalaine was leaning on a little post that the rope was connected to with a bored expression on her face.
Instantly she stood up and looked towards the very front of it, which was at least sixty feet from where we stood.
" Would you people hurry up already?! Gosh! These people walk so flipping slow!" She complained really loudly.
Coming from her, you couldn't get annoyed with her complaining.
You'd only be amused.
" Almost there." Rodney said.
I had to give him credit.
He was being very patient with us.
" Finally." Lalaine said exasperated.
We started walking towards the entrance and made it through.
Now we just had to wait for the coaster to come back, load the next people so they can get their ride, and then it was our turn.
We waited for five minutes and then the coaster came back.
The next group of people got loaded and off they went.
We waited for another five minutes and then it was our turn.
A whole five minutes to endure of this ride. I thought in my head.
Lalaine's eyes lit up as she got in, taking a seat next to a really cute guy that was alone right in front of us.
Rodney and I sat together behind her.
I sat there fiddling with the buckle trying to figure it out but the thing
seemed to be all over the place.
" Here." Rodney said, grabbing the belt.
" You have to put your arms through them like this. It crosses over your chest. Kinda like putting a vest on or something." He said, clicking the buckle together and tightening the straps.
" Oh yeah, duh." I said, laughing at my stupidity.
We pushed the bulky bar in front of us over our laps and waited for the
guys to come and check to make sure that all seat belts and bars were locked in place.
One minute later the coaster started moving uphill.
I could feel my stomach becoming queasy with bump as we made our way
to the top, hoping that I wouldn't throw up.
I could hear it now, the sounds dying and the coaster slowing.
" I'm Lalaine!" I heard her yell at the guy she was sitting next to.
" David." He yelled back, shaking her hand.
She smiled real big and then looked at me to give me a smile.
It was right then that we dropped.
Lalaine turned to face the front and threw her hands in the air, hooting and
hollering with the guy next to her.
I grabbed onto the bar in front of me for security.
Rodney had his shades off of course, with his arms in the air.
It was when the loop came that all my fears returned from when I was little.
The death loop that had you going upside down.
I looked even further and noticed that there were three loops, back to back.
I couldn't even breathe because the wind was rushing past us so fast it was hard to breathe in through your nose.
The only thing you could do was scream, breathe in from your mouth and hope that there's no bugs and no one throws up for it to come falling in your mouth.
