Brett Ratner confirms 7 things is about Nick Jonas

Miley Cyrus' '7 Things' Is About Nick Jonas, Director Brett Ratner Seemingly Reveals

'She reminded me a lot of Madonna,' Ratner says of VMA-nominated tween queen.

Veteran video director Brett Ratner has worked with Madonna, Mariah Carey, Diddy, Jessica Simpson, Wu-Tang Clan and many others. And he's got high praise for VMA (http://vma.mtv.com/) Best New Artist nominee Miley Cyrus (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1592481/20080808/cyrus__miley.jhtml), whose "7 Things" clip he recently helmed.
"She reminded me a lot of Madonna," Ratner told MTV News. "And I hate saying that, but what I mean is, like Madonna, she can be hanging out and laughing, and then you put the camera on her and it's like, 'Holy sh--!' "
That effervescence actually made the simple performance video more difficult for the director. "It was the hardest video I've ever edited because every moment was great," he said. "Every moment that she was on camera, she was amazing. She's got an incredible quality about her. She gets the camera, and that's what it takes to make a great music video.
"She came out in these high-heel boots and I was going to say something to her about them," he continued, "but on her own she was like, 'I'd feel better in sneakers.' Her instincts are great. She has great charisma and personality."
He recalled discussing the video with the young star during a visit to her home, where she told him how much the song — which she co-wrote — means to her, and said that it's about an ex-boyfriend. (Cyrus told MTV News last month that much of the album is about ex-boyfriends (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1591241/20080721/cyrus__miley.jhtml).)
While Ratner declined to reveal who exactly that ex is, he gave away a significant detail — perhaps inadvertently — that seems to confirm the song is about Nick Jonas. Cyrus recently admitted, after months of unconfirmed speculation, that she dated Jonas for two years (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1592354/20080807/cyrus__miley.jhtml).
"She had me come out to her house," Ratner recalled. "She started showing me all of her personal items from under her bed that her ex-boyfriend gave her. So she pulled out his dirty socks and a bunch of photographs.
"The necklace she's wearing in the video is the necklace he gave her," he said. "She's wearing his diabetes or medical necklace."
Nick recently made himself a de facto spokesperson for awareness of the disease: Earlier this month, the group held a press conference where he said the title track to their new LP, A Little Bit Longer — for which he wrote the lyrics — is a "life song" where he addresses his affliction (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1592251/20080806/jonas_brothers.jhtml).
For his part, Ratner said he believes Cyrus has the talent and the attitude to make her not only a Best New Artist, but a career artist.
"She was very down to earth, and it's kind of very popular for little girls in the entertainment industry to be kind of bratty," he said. "I couldn't believe how many people wanted to visit [the video set], and I've worked with people like Mariah and Madonna. She was very gracious and she's very smart. She really knows her stuff. Look, [whether] she wins or not, I think she'll make a great transition [from being a teen star]. She's very conscientious of her persona and of the crossover."
He also pointed out what he sees as her emotional maturity, and her comfort with being a 15-year-old superstar.
"She's not, like, frustrated with where she's at," he said. "You can tell by the lyrics that they're very personal and that's how she'll make that transition. The stuff she talks about in the video is clever and emotional and fun at the same time. You can be 18 and enjoy it too."

Would you believe it, i actually started crying a little bit reading this (which is partly due to my hormones being all over the place), just hearing all those great things about Miley. Also, it was really sad hearing about her getting all the stuff 'her ex' gave her, like she still keeps it all under her bed :(. I agree completely with everything he said, and i love the part where he says it was the most difficult video to edit because it was all so good! Well Brett had no idea who Miley was(other then her name and that shes a big disney star) before he directed her music video, its very possible he has no idea who the JB are or maybe has no idea how big they are. but yeah i think he didn't realize that by saying what he did he was confirming who the song was about.

Haha yeah that line pretty much sums up Miley in general i think. The thing that always stands out for me with her is that she was simply BORN to perform. She knows the camera, like Brett says, and she knows her audience. She just has a connection that makes every single performance feel like she's performing to each and every person in the audience personally, including people watching from a screen.

Yeah, she strikes me as someone who just knows when something is the right thing to do. Someone made a really good point in one of the threads on here about the various guys in Miley's life. They said something along the lines of thinking Miley should stay single because she's better that way, at least for now. That really got me thinking, we're all so preoccupied with who Miley might be going out with that we forget that actually, she does seem to work really well as a single person. This is just me taking wild guesses, but from what i've seen of people like Miley, Britney and Lindsay (yes i know people don't like comparing them): honestly, they're all talented individuals, but in the case of the latter two, it seems like although they have really good work ethics, their one big weakness is relationships. I'm guessing that for people like that, it's all about control, they're very good at knowing what's right for them, and they have a smart head on their shoulders, but when you get involved with someone else romantically, you do lose some control, because your life isn't just about you anymore. So you want to please the person you're with, and sometimes that means dying your hair or trying to come across as more 'sexy', and that's where the problems start. I'm not saying it's the other person's fault, it's just that seems to be what happens. So actually, i think at the moment, Miley is probably better off single, she can concentrate on working and just being a teenager. There's plenty of time left to fall in love.

and I agree, to hear a huge director praise her like that is amazing, and I don't think he was stretching anything he said. She has star quality, more than most adults in the business have.

And it was so sad to hear about her keeping the stff Nick gave her under her bed, but it shows how much she cared about him. I feel bad if she still does have feeling for him and is not quite over him yet.

That's debatable, depending who you talk to, but i'm not saying Miley is exactly like those two, thank goodness she isn't, but i think actually it wouldn't be at all a bad thing for Miley to stay single. And i'm sure Britney and Lindsay were once down to earth to. In a slightly sick and twisted way, i guess i'm saying Miley is actually really lucky to have those two as an example of what NOT to do in future.
Back on topic though, i think she'll be fine. I was watching 7 Things incidentally last night, and I realised that Miley really is something new as far as Disney is concerned, and as far as Teen Stars are concerned. I mean, at the moment there's the whole JB vs Miley vs Demi and Selena vs M&M etc. and loads of people have said that it's probably a jealousy issue, at least in part. When you think about it, at the DC, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus and the High School Musical gang are the big ones. They're the ones that have done something new and become global phenomenons. Then you have Wizards of Waverly Place and the Jonas Brothers. And neither group really hangs out with each other, at least not anymore. So i was thinking about that, and how much of an achievement it is, what HSM and HM have done. But then, watching 7 Things, I realised Miley's gone even beyond that already, she really is something different, because she's done things that no other DC Star has ever done, and technically when it comes down to it: Miley and Demi are the most talented singers from Disney, but what comes with that is that they both have a more limited audience because other DC stars have perfectly good voices that just please people and aren't really anything new, whereas Miley and Demi have more unique voices, so more people might find it's just not for them. Anyway, after all that, i'm not really sure what my point was, but it was something like that really goes to show how Miley has gone into new territory.

Brett does really know what he is talking about, and you guys are right, the quality's that he is talking about set miley apart from most of the other disney stars, espessially demi and selena, who people for some reason think are the "next miley cyrus". I'd really like to see Miley do a completely non-Disney film in the near future, not something too different that it alienates her fans, but something that's another step up from Hannah Montana. She's taken some time to establish herself as a serious music artist, now it's time to do something similar with her acting, so we can see her in something other than Hannah Montana. I think in terms of music, people now can separate Miley and Hannah, but in acting, we haven't got much to compare it with, so I think once she starts doing other acting roles, she'll really start to be taken seriously, as long as she takes the right roles :) But first of all, most importantly, i think she deserves to take a holiday!

Christina and her husband had a baby but Christina's getting ready to release a new CD. the thing with acting is Miley has no control over what roles she can and can't take. Disney has to approve any role Miley wants to take and because disney doesn't want anyone making money off her but them its nearly impossible for Miley to grow as an actress and take other roles.
Miley's mom took her to Florida. Only for 4 days, but thats better then no vacation.

Heck yeah. She just seems like an extremely normal kid. She's not concerened with being perfect 24/7. She just is what she is, and if people don't like it, fine. But she's not going to change to accomodate them. I think that's what Ratner was getting at in parts. You can't do that. You can't change yourself to accomodate other people. Like a lot of the teens in hollywood have talent, but they don't have those things that bretts talking about and thats why a lot of them can't make the transition. None of them have Miley's work ethic ethier. In a city full of talent those kind things determine who stays on top and who doesn't.

the one in 7 things is a medical one, so is the one Miley wore for months. and yeah it is stupid and dangerous for both of them. Its a good way for Miley to get herself sick, if something were to happen to her and she was wearing that dog tag a paramedic would give her the opposite treatment of what she'd needed.

I love Brett too. A lot of people on other Miley sites, and even on JB sites are saying Brett shouldn't have mentioned the detail about the necklace, but like you said chances are Brett has no idea who the Jonas Brothers are, that Miley's ex is a member of the Jonas Brothers or if you knew the first two, that Nick has been vocal about his diabetes.
You really can truely tell that Brett means what hes saying, I saw the E News interview that he was like singing her praises on and he was so passionate about what he was saying. Theres no way he didn't believe what he told MTV. Brett seems to be a lot like Miley in that hes not afraid to show how much he loves his work and is passionate about it. Hes worked with some of the biggest names in the world I think he knows what hes talking about and their is no way he made up what he said about Miley. He put so much thought and detail into it

lol, thank you. she didn't tell everyone that she still has all that stuff. If she does still have a bunch of stuff that he gave her IDK why they'd be irritated. most guys i know would find some wierd satsifaction in the girl still having all that stuff(because in their mind it would mean the girls not over them), but thats just the guys I know. They definately wouldn't be irritated about that.
