the usual.
There I was, enjoying a perfect, dream-like dinner with my current boyfriend, Liam.
And then as if by magic—POOF!—he’s gone. By my will.
How, you may ask?
Well, here’s how that so-called perfection continued:
“You’ll never believe what I did last night—Liam, Liam, are you listening to me? Liam?” I asked, snapping my fingers in front of his face.
He looked up from whatever he was doing. “Huh? Uh, yeah, sure…what were you saying, Lauren?”
“I was about to tell you how last night went.”
“What did you do last night again?”
“Here’s a hint—think! I told you earlier today! Why don’t you use that brain of yours and try to figure it out yourself?”
“Uh…wait, don’t tell me…”
“I wasn’t planning on it, jerk,” I muttered under my breath.
“What?”
“Oh, nothing, Liam. So, what was I doing last night? You failed to answer the question.”
“I failed? This was a test?!”
I slapped my head against my forehead and rested it on the table.
“Last night…last night was one of the best nights of my life and you don’t even know what I was doing,” I replied, rolling my eyes. “Typical teenage boy,” I mumbled.
“Look, I’ve had things other than you on my mind, okay?”
“Oh, like what?” I raised my eyebrows.
He looked around nervously. “Uh…well, it’s not exactly stuff I want to talk about right now.”
“Why not?” I asked curiously. “I thought we had an honest relationship. Don’t we?”
“Um, yeah, well—“
Then I (well, practically the whole restaurant) heard a screech; well, not technically a screech, more like a scream of happiness, but from my point of view, it was a screech. I swear it was like fingernails on the chalkboard for me.
“LIAM!!” A girl’s preppy, high pitched voice boomed through the restaurant. I looked at Liam, suddenly interested in who it was and what was going on. I smiled suspiciously and raised my eyebrows while he looked around for the voice awkwardly.
The girl behind the voice appeared next to our table, practically throwing herself onto Liam. I thought she would start eating his face, but instead kissed his cheek and stood up.
“OH I’VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH!! We have to, well…you know, catch up,” she winked and then giggled.
My jaw dropped angrily, but I still looked curious and interested in what he’d say back.
“Sarah, I told you, we don’t talk about that until,” he started whispering in her ear, but I could still hear, “we’re in the bedroom.”
Now I wasn’t curious anymore. I was just plain mad. I looked around, searching for a way of attack—and spotted a dessert cart. I stood up, put my napkin on the table, and walked over to it. I picked up the biggest banana split I could find and pranced back to Liam. I stood behind him and turned the banana split upside down on top of his head.
“Oops,” I fake-giggled, smiling. “My hand slipped…wait, no, yours did,” I added, my fake smile disappearing, pointing to his hand firmly placed on the girl’s butt.
I heard some laughter coming from various tables and smiled to myself. I picked up my purse and then handed him my napkin. “You may be needing that…oh, and by the way,” I said, stopping after I was a few feet away from the table, “consider ‘banana split’ what’s happening with us right now. We’re so over.”
And with that, I walked out of the restaurant, glad I still had my dignity.
The only bad part about walking out alone was I had to walk home. It was probably a 20 minute walk.
So instead, I called Number 1 on my speed dial.
“Hello?” The voice on the other end asked.
“Hey, can you come pick me up?”
“What, why? Where are you? I thought you were on a date with Liam.”
“I was…I’ll explain later. I’m still at the restaurant. Can you just come pick me up before Barbie and Ken come out here and try to molest me to death?”
“Uh, sure,” the person answered, and I could tell they were confused.
“Thanks, you’re the best!”
“I know. See you in a few.”
“Yep. Bye.”
“Bye.” Then the person on the other line hung up. So did I.
Still wondering who was on the other line? Take a guess.
And it’s not my mom, dad, or sibling.
---
I waited outside for 5 minutes and 34 seconds (yes, I was keeping track), and then a car pulled up at the curb. The window rolled down and inside was the smiling face of my best friend.
Nick Jonas. Duh, how did you not know that?
“Yo, get in. I have candy in case you need some,” he laughed.
“Sorry, I don’t accept candy from strangers,” I joked, walking up to the window.
“I’m not a stranger, but apparently—in your words—I’m strange. Just get in, Miss Heartbreaker.”
I smiled, knowing I lost. I opened the door and sat down in the passenger seat next to Nick.
I buckled up and he drove out of the parking lot. I took one look back at the restaurant, and then stared out the front of the windshield, thinking.
Nick must’ve noticed, because at a red light, he looked over at me. “What’s on your mind?”
I shrugged. “The usual.”
“Oh, the usual—where you ask yourself why you actually thought you liked the guy and then beat yourself up for it?”
“Well, not the beating myself up for it part, but yeah, pretty much. Do you know what he’s done—and probably going to do—with that sl*t he thinks is attractive?”
He held his hand up. “I don’t even want to know.” Then the light changed to green, and he resumed driving.
For the rest of the short car ride, I didn’t say anything. And Nick didn’t either. It was part of “the usual” routine.
But my favorite part of “the usual” routine hasn’t happened yet.
---
“Alright, we’re here,” Nick said quietly, snapping me out of my trance.
“Right, thanks again, you’re awesome!” I replied, jumping out of the car and waving.
He waved, and then drove back to his house—3 houses down from mine.
I went inside, and my mom knew automatically what happened—first, because Nick dropped me off, and second, because I ran upstairs to get my photo album.
And not just any photo album, I might add.

Xing ceremony.
The photo album was not just any old photo album…see, I have this “tradition”, if you will. It’s what my family, Nick, and I consider “the usual” after a lousy relationship and breakup.
It consists of, 1) Nick picking me up at the scene of the breakup (unless he’s not available), 2) not very much talking about it; don’t want to dwell on pointless topics, and 3) the Xing ceremony.
And I call it the Xing ceremony because, well, I X them out. I make sure to get a picture of each of my boyfriends, and then after we break up, I get out a permanent marker (color is irrelevant) and proceed with the Xing ceremony. I write the boyfriend’s first name on the back of the picture, and that day’s date underneath it. I turn the picture over, and have fun releasing my anger while drawing Xs all over the face (and if I’m really mad, I’ll draw little devil horns and a mustache). I then put the picture into the photo album; why, I don’t know. It’s just a way to help me forget about them, I guess.
So I performed the Xing ceremony. I slid the picture into the plastic sleeve and closed the photo album. I ran it back upstairs and dropped it on my bed. My dad called me downstairs soon after.
“Lauren, we’re leaving,” he said as I trotted down the stairs.
“Leaving to go where?”
“Out to dinner. Didn’t Taylor tell you?”
I looked over at Taylor, who was glued to her phone. She managed to look up for a few seconds. “Oh, sorry, I forgot.”
“Taylor, you have to be more responsible than that,” my mom added.
“Sorry.”
“Our numbers are on the table—“
“Mom, I’m not a babysitter. I’m your daughter. Do you think I’ve memorized your cell phone numbers by now?”
“Yes, but—“
“No buts. Go and enjoy your, very late, dinner.” I opened the door and they walked out. I closed it and locked it, and then turned to Taylor.
“Who are you obsessing over now?” I asked, sitting down on the couch next to her.
“Oh, no one,” she giggled.
“So why are you texting no one?” I asked sarcastically.
“Alright, alright…his name’s Cody.”
“Cody…?”
“Cody Brown.”
“Oh, you mean that guy that works at the juice bar?”
“Yeah, isn’t he adorable?”
“Uh, isn’t he a little old for me?” I mocked.
“True, but he’s only a year older than me. He’s 19.”
“So? What’s the difference?”
Taylor shifted position and stopped texting. “Well, today I went to the juice bar, and I ordered juice,” she giggled.
“Shocker,” I whispered to myself.
She continued. “And he was totally hitting on me! I sat down at a table while I was waiting for my juice, and I noticed it was done. I got up to start walking over to the counter to get it, but he brought it to me!” She sighed.
I stifled a laugh. “They always do that, Taylor.”
“Do what?” She was still in a Cody-trance.
“Bring. Your. Juice. To. You,” I said again, much slower.
“Well he’s never done it for me, so I consider it hitting on me. Plus, how do you explain this?” She held up her phone about an inch away from my face. I stared at it, disinterested.
“It’s a phone number. But not just anyone’s phone number,” she began.
“CODY’S PHONE NUMBER!” I joined her in squealing, only mine wasn't as excited.
“So that’s who you’ve been texting nonstop?”
“DUH!” She replied, smiling. Her phone rang and I pushed it away from my face so she could read the text message from Cody.
“Aw,” she giggled. She rapidly started typing and I rolled my eyes.
“In case you care, I’m going upstairs,” I said loudly. She waved me off. “Fine, whatever, goodnight!” I added. She still didn’t respond, just became a bundle of giggles.
I walked up the stairs, rubbing my eyes because the brightness of the phone really hurt. I went into my room and changed into boxers (girl boxers—with underwear underneath—not guy boxers) and a tank top. I let my curly hair stay loose on my shoulders and heard a knock at the front door. Assuming Taylor wouldn’t answer it, I sleepily walked down the stairs, half-tripping, and opened the door, ignoring the rule my parents made: don’t open the door when we’re not home.
But it wasn’t anything bad. It was just Nick.
“Hey Lauren…oh, hi?” He said, obviously noticing my pajamas.
“Oh, hey Nick. I thought you were Cody.”
“Lemme guess, your new boyfriend?”
“Actually, no, it’s Taylor’s new boyfriend.”
I heard her yell “not my boyfriend…yet!” and I said the same thing back to Nick.
“Were you asleep? I didn’t mean to wake you up.”
“No, I was just about to go to sleep, but it’s fine. What are you doing here?”
“Oh, um, well I came to give you the candy,” he smiled.
I laughed. “Thanks.”
He handed me the candy. “How was last night?”
“Finally, SOMEONE who remembered!” I rejoiced. He laughed. “It went really well…I think I’ve got a good shot at a scholarship.”
“That’s great! Scholarship for what though? I mean, there’re so many things—“
“Photography, Nick. It’s a photography college.”
“Uh huh, right, I knew that.”
“Wow,” I smiled.
“Well, I gotta go. Enjoy the candy, and sweet dreams,” he laughed. I waved and closed the front door.
I was startled to find Taylor standing behind me. I gasped and then sighed when I saw it was her.
“Your boyfriend came over, I see?”
“What? No, he’s not my boyfriend! That’s Nick, my best friend, since we were like, 3 years old…well, I was three and he was four, but that’s not the point. Trust me; it would never work out between us.”
“I have to disagree with that, sis. Have you seen the way he looks at you? And how he’s always there for you? He brought you candy at 8 o’clock at night. How sweet is that?”
“He’s my BEST FRIEND, Tay. Just, go away. I’m going to sleep.”
“Fine, but don’t be surprised—“
“Shut it, alright? Just stop. Goodnight.”
“’Night,” she laughed.
I walked up the stairs angrily.
Taylor doesn’t understand anything. Nick isn’t my type…well, boyfriend type anyway. And he doesn’t look at me like she was saying. Plus, he’s always there for me because he’s that great of a friend…and the candy is just an added bonus.
I laughed quietly to myself and stared out my window at the stars. It was a perfect view, so I grabbed my camera and took a picture of it. Satisfied, I put the camera back on my dresser and climbed into my bed.
I fell asleep to the sound of the crickets chirping outside.

all guys are the same.
“LAURENNN!! LAUREN WAKE UP!!” Taylor’s voice roared in my ears.
I sat up quickly. “What?! What do you want with me, Taylor?! Let me sleep!”
“No, we’re going to the juice bar today.”
“No I’m not.”
“Yes you are.”
“No I’m not.”
“Yes you are.”
“NO. I’M. NOT.”
“Yes. You. Are. Now come on, get out of bed and change. You look horrible!”
“Well, I’m not exactly trying to win a beauty pageant while I’m asleep, thank you very much!” But I still relented. She pulled me out of the bed and I pushed her out of my room, closing my door.
I changed into a pair of black skinny jeans, a loose striped polo (from the guy’s section of the store, they have some of the best shirts; shh!), and yellow Converse. My hair has those natural huge curls/waves, so I brushed it and left it the way it was.
And obviously my sister wasn’t impressed with my choice of clothes. “Ugh, you’re going to wear that to the juice bar?!” She groaned.
“Taylor, this is how I dress EVERY DAY and you fail to notice that. Besides, it’s not like I want to go to the juice bar, so why should I look like I’m participating in a fashion show?”
“True, true. Well then, get in the car.”
I walked out to the car, and saw Nick leaning against the front of it. I walked up to him and he looked up, jumping off the car.
“Hello there,” I laughed. “What are you doing here so early?”
“Early? It’s like 10 AM.”
“Whatever.”
“And I’m here because I wanted to ask you—“
“LAUREN GET IN THE CAR! WE HAVE TO GO!” Nick was interrupted by Taylor’s honking and screaming.
“Fine!” I yelled back. I turned back to Nick. “Sorry, can we talk later?”
“Yeah, sure,” he answered, less happily than before.
“Thanks.” I got into the car, and before we drove away, Nick asked where we were going. “The juice bar, to see Cody,” I made a gag face and Nick laughed. Then Taylor drove off our street.
She stopped at a red light. “Sure, he’s horrible, isn’t he?” She said sarcastically. “He shows up in the morning just to talk to you. Yeah, definitely NOT boyfriend material.”
I glared at her. “He’s NOT my boyfriend and it WOULDN’T work out between us.”
“Whatever you say, Lauren. Whatever you say.”
I rolled my eyes. After a semi-long car ride, we finally arrived at the juice bar. Taylor ran out of the car, barely taking the time to put it in park. I hopped out, and groaned as I watched my older sister throw herself at Cody. And he wasn’t just enjoying it—he was milking it.
“Lauren, come here for a second. I want you to meet somebody!” Taylor squealed.
I rolled my eyes again and walked over to them. I held out my hand for Cody, but he didn’t shake it. Another guy did. He was younger than Cody, but was a spitting image of him—although, I have to admit, the younger one was cuter.
“Hi,” I flirted.
“Hi…what’s your name?” He flirted back.
“I’m Lauren. You?”
“Chris. Cody’s younger brother.”
“Oh, right. And this is Taylor, my older sister,” I said, pointing to her.
“Wanna get a smoothie?” He asked, leading me inside the juice bar.
“Sure, what kind do you like? I like—“
“Strawberry-banana!” We both squealed (yes, squealed). He smiled and I giggled.
We ordered the smoothie—with 2 straws—and sat down at a table. For about…eh, let’s say half an hour, we talked. Shortened versions of life stories were told, interests were thrown around, etc. etc.
Soon the smoothie was gone too, and before I knew it, Taylor decided it was time to go home.
“Hey Laur, let’s go. Mom and Dad have probably already called the National Guard by now,” she said, a chuckle escaping her lips.
“Alright, fine.” I stood up. “Thanks Chris, that was fun.”
“Yeah, no problem. So um…I was wondering if you wanted to go to a movie or something later.”
I looked at Taylor and pleaded with my eyes. She nodded. “Sure, that’d be awesome. What time?”
“Is 6 okay?’
“Yep,” I smiled.
“Alright, I’ll pick you up at 6 then. Bye!”
“Bye,” I waved as Taylor dragged me out of the restaurant.
“What was that all about?” She asked, a little angry.
“What was what all about? He’s a nice guy. It’s the same with you and Cody.”
“No, it’s not the same, because I don’t want you to get hurt again, Lauren. Promise me you won’t.”
“I’ll try not to—“
“PROMISE!”
“Okay, I promise, gosh. What happens if I do get hurt though?”
“Hopefully it won’t be physically, right?”
“Right.”
“Well, we’ll have to live with the emotional pain. But that’s the thing—you can’t just go around picking up random guys because you think they’re cute!”
I raised an eyebrow at her.
“So, just because I do that doesn’t mean you should. I’m 18, Lauren. You’re 15.”
I raised the other eyebrow.
“Ugh stop that! Just get in the car.”
When we were almost home from the silent drive, Taylor added, “I’m allowing you to go to the movie tonight, but you better not try anything.”
“Tay, you know me better than anyone. Why would I try anything? Wouldn’t it be the guy?”
“True, but I’m trusting you. If something goes wrong, you call me right away.”
I looked at her and raised my eyebrow again.
“Or Nick.”
“Much better.”
“Whatever.” She parked the car in the driveway and I got out and headed for Nick’s house.
I rang the doorbell and Joe answered it.
“Hey Lauren, hold on one second,” he said. “NICK, YOUR GIRLFRIEND’S HERE!” He yelled at the staircase.
I blushed as I saw Nick running down the stairs, fuming. “JOE GET OUT OF HERE! SHE’S NOT MY GIRLFRIEND!”
I smiled to myself. Nick pushed him out of the doorway and stood outside with me, closing the front door.
“Sorry about that,” he blushed.
“No, I get it from my sister too. She calls you my boyfriend.”
“Really? Why?”
“Because she thinks you and I would be ‘perfect together’,” I answered, making quotes with my fingers. “I honestly don’t see what she’s getting at.”
“Oh,” he cleared his throat.
“So what did you want to ask me?”
“Oh um…well I was wondering if you had any plans tonight.”
“I’m sorry, but I do. I’m going to a movie with Cody’s brother Chris.”
He looked crushed. “Alright, well, talk to you later then.” He turned to go inside. He opened the front door.
“Nick, I’m sorry. I really do want to hang out with you but—“
“Save it,” he added angrily. He slammed the front door in my face. I walked home, confused, upset, and angry feelings mixing and bending my thoughts like putty.
Nick never gets that mad at me. I wonder what’s up.
Evidently Taylor wanted to know what was up too. As soon as I walked through the front door, she bombarded me with questions.
“Look, Tay, he’s mad at me. I told him I had plans tonight and he got all upset. Just get out of here, I want to be alone.”
“Well then. And, P.S., you’re not going to be alone for very long—your date’s in a few hours,” she winked, reminding me.
“Right, whatever. I’m going to my room.”
She shrugged her shoulders and went back to annoyingly texting her boyfriend.
I relaxed in my room for a couple hours (only going down for dinner) and then heard the doorbell ring. I walked out of my room and opened it. It was Chris.
“Ready to go?” He asked.
“Yes,” I answered, glaring at my sister who was now staring at us.
I closed the front door behind me and he drove us to the movie theater. When we got there, he bought popcorn and we each got a soda—I got Diet Coke and he got Sprite.
We bought the movie tickets too…the movie we were seeing was Wall-E.
---
About halfway through the movie, I got up to go to the bathroom, and when I came back, Chris stood up too. “Let’s go,” he whispered.
“But I want to see the rest of the—“
“We can do something else, okay?”
I took one look back at the screen and nodded my head sadly. “Alright,” I whispered. I followed him out of the movie theater and we got into his car in the parking lot.
But instead of starting the car, we just kind of sat there in silence. Not for long, though.
Soon he started trying to kiss me, but I refused. I put my hands in front of my face. Yet he still tried to kiss me, and then even climbed over the stick (the thing that puts the car in drive, park, etc) to get closer to me. I unbuckled and kicked him where the sun don’t shine and yet he still reached out with one hand to touch me.
I opened the car door and jumped out. “YOU DISGUSTING, HORRIBLE PERV!! UGH I CAN’T BELIEVE I THOUGHT YOU WERE CUTE AND NICE! YOU’RE JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER GUYS I’VE DATED!”
I stormed away from the car, and saw him close the passenger door and drive off, obviously going at least 10 mph faster than the speed limit.
I opened my phone and dialed speed dial Number 1 (Nick) again.
“Hello?” He asked. I could sense anger—or what is jealousy?—in his voice.
“Nick, I seriously need you to come over to the movie theater.”
“And why should I?”
“Because I need you to pick me up.”
“Wow, you dumped him that fast?” He asked sarcastically.
“Nick, stop it. Please come pick me up. I’m sorry about earlier…please,” I begged.
It was silent for a few seconds and then he replied, “Alright, I’m on my way.”
I sighed. “Thank you!”
We both hung up and I waited for his car to pull up in the parking lot. I paced in circles until I saw him. I got right into the car and buckled up quickly.
“Whoa, what’s the rush?” He asked.
“I want to get as far away from this parking lot as possible. Gun it!”
“I’m not going to gun it.”
“Well then shut up and drive!”
“Okay, I’m going, I’m going. Gosh, pushy much?”
“Shut up and drive.”
“I am driving. So what happened this time?”
“Something horrible and disgusting…I missed the last half of the movie because he wanted to make out—and more—in his car!”
“He what?!” Now he was angry, but not at me.
“He’s such a perv. I can’t believe I thought I liked him.”
“Step 2 of the usual,” Nick said quietly.
“No, the usual doesn’t apply to this situation.”
“What are you talking about? You’re not going to do the Xing ceremony?”
“Oh trust me, I am. But what doesn’t apply is the part AFTER the Xing ceremony.”
He scrunched up his nose. “…eating the candy I gave you?”
“No, forgetting about what happened and moving on; finding someone else. I just can’t do it.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m giving up on love, Nick. It’s just not going to work for me, ever.”
“Lauren…Lauren don’t give up on love. Just because you dated a few—“
“A lot.”
“Okay, a lot of lousy guys doesn’t mean you should give up on love. Not every guy is the same. There are those rare few that are perfect. You know, there’s someone for everyone.”
I pondered on this for a while until we got to my house. “You’re right, there is a guy for every girl…just apparently not me.” I got out of the car and stood in the driveway. He rolled down the window.
“And by the way, my sister was wrong about you. That was dumb of you to get mad at me like that earlier. I guess all guys are the same.”
With that, I fast-walked up the walkway and into the house. Nick pulled away, and I half-wondered what his reaction would be.
But the other half of me couldn’t care less.

Haha  Here's the next chapter:
just in case.
I woke up at 4 AM that next morning with an eye-opening dream—figuratively, of course.
The dream centered around me and my life, and had pictures of past boyfriends (including Chris Brown…Cody Brown’s brother, not the famous Chris Brown) floating around me. I had flashbacks of all the horrible experiences I had with them, and then they were surrounded by a dark cloud-like thing.
I looked around and saw a white cloud-like thing with a rainbow coming from it. There was a blurry figure at the end of the rainbow, but I couldn’t see what the face looked like. For some reason it looked oddly familiar…
I thought about my dream for the next 4 hours, staying awake until 8 AM. I got out of bed at 8 and walked downstairs, only to be greeted by a glum Taylor.
“Thanks a lot,” she grumbled.
“What did I do?”
“You made Cody break up with me!”
“I did no such thing!”
“Oh yeah? Then explain what happened with Chris last night.”
I looked down. “I’d rather not.”
“Well, that’s why Cody broke up with me!”
“Because I didn’t want to go all the way with some guy I had know for a few hours? Oh, excuse me for remembering my standards and values!”
“It wasn’t just that, sis. Chris really liked you, and Cody only dates people if his brother is happy. Since his brother isn’t happy now, because of you, he broke up with me!”
“Taylor, life isn’t all about guys!”
“Yeah, and that’s coming from the girl with a photo album full of past boyfriends. Look, Lauren, you have a problem, okay? You get a good first impression of a guy and assume he’s perfect for you.”
I made a face at her.
“Alright, I did that with Cody, but that’s not the point. You have to really, really get to know a guy before going out on, say, a movie date or something with them—and don’t you dare say a word and make a face at me, missy. My boyfriends are more mature than yours.”
“But I’m more mature than you. See how that works?” I said freshly.
“No, I don’t see how that works. I’m older and—“
“Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re more mature. Actually, being older can make you less mature because—“
“Stop telling me things no one cares that you know. It’s a known fact that—“
“It’s a known fact that boys mature after girls.”
“There you again with knowing stuff people don’t care about! UGH I’m finished here. Just…go apologize to Nick. His brothers called earlier and they want the old Nick back.”
“Shut it. I’m not apologizing.”
“You will apologize or I’ll make you.”
“And how will you make me?”
She smiled devilishly. My mouth formed a perfect “O”.
“You wouldn’t,” I squinted my eyes.
“Yes I would.”
“You would never do anything to my pictures or my camera, would you?”
“I would if you don’t go now to apologize. I have your camera right here,” she added, taking it out from behind her back.
“You are an EVIL person, Taylor, you know that?”
“Oh I know. Now go or I’ll be forced to go all kung-fu on your beloved camera.”
“UGH FINE! I’m leaving, gosh. Now don’t do anything to it while I’m gone, are we clear?”
“Sis, you honestly think I’d do anything without you here?”
“You just threatened me, so…yes.”
She nodded her head and agreed with me. Then she shoved me out the front door and I walked slowly down the sidewalk, praying Nick wouldn’t be home or something.
Just my luck, he was home. AND to make it even better, he answered the door.
“What are you doing here?” He asked angrily, rolling his eyes.
“Look, I came to apologize, okay? My sister is making me—“
“Oh, so you only came to apologize because your sister told you to? And for a second I thought you were actually being sincere. Gosh, was my assumption off.”
“Stop being fresh with me, Nick. I didn’t just come because my sister told me to—“
“She threatened your work didn’t she?”
“Okay…so she did. But it’s not like I don’t want to be friends with you, I just didn’t want to face you.”
“Suuure you didn’t.” He turned around and yelled into the other room. “JOE, KEVIN, YOUR BREAKUP ADVISER IS HERE!”
My jaw dropped. “Ohh NO he di’n’t!” I said loudly. He turned around, smirked, and then walked away when Joe and Kevin came to the front door.
Kevin faked a smile. “I guess it worked. Thanks for all your help, Lauren. We know we can always count on you,” he said sarcastically.
Joe faked a smile too, and that just about threw me over the edge.
“ALRIGHT, I am DONE with this family’s sarcasm! If you guys WANT to be my friend, then at least ACT like it. And Nick,” he turned to face the doorway, “if my sister was right about you and you DO like me, then at least ACT like it. OKAY?!” I said furiously.
I walked off down the sidewalk, fuming. I didn’t hear the front door close, but I didn’t dare look back. I just ran inside my house, ignored Taylor, only sarcastically yelling back, “I JUST LOST ALL MY FRIENDS, THANKS TO YOU! I LOVE YOU TAYLOR!”
I slammed my bedroom door and wasn’t happy to find a text message making my phone go crazy all over my dresser. I opened it and knew exactly who it was from. But it wasn’t what I expected.
I’m sorry…NJ
You’re what, Nick Jonas? And how am I supposed to believe that crap?
For a few minutes, I was seriously considering tearing up all my pictures and destroying my camera.
But then I realized that photography was my only way to stay sane.
So picked up the camera and started taking pictures of just random things. Some were when I was looking through my open window, and then I spotted something else; something…that looked a little too much like Nick.
I groaned. “What do you want?”
“I wanted to say that I was sorry…whoa, now it’s like we just switched personalities.”
“Well then, I’m fine with that. Beg all you want, I’m not going to forgive you for acting the way you did.”
“Oh and you think I should forgive you?”
“Yes Nick, because it’s not my fault. Anyways I don’t care if you don’t forgive me; I can live my life as a lonely photog.”
“Oh stop with all that crap. I’m telling the truth…I’m truly, honestly sorry for how I acted.”
I raised an eyebrow and took a picture of his face while he said that. I looked at it and then looked back at Nick. “Hmm…better keep this one, just in case,” I winked.
His jaw dropped and he stormed off angrily. I smirked to myself.
“Just in case,” I whispered to myself.
And if you don’t know what I’m getting at, let’s just say…part 3 of the usual, only without the boyfriend part. I’m not saying I’m going to do it, but like I said—just in case.

“LAUREN! GET DOWN HERE THIS INSTANT!” A voice screamed from downstairs.
I groaned as I slid out of my bed and onto the floor, slowly getting to my feet. I didn’t even bother checking what I looked like in the mirror; I just gravitated down the stairs to wherever I thought the voice came from.
I ended up in the foyer, thankfully not having to go far. But the unthankful thing was there were people in the foyer. Lots of people. And Taylor was there…I was assuming it was her who yelled.
“God, you sound like Mom, Tay,” I groaned, rubbing my eyes.
“Sorry, but—uh, Lauren, do you realize what you look like?”
I looked down at my wrinkled pajamas and fingered through my hair. “Yeah, so? And what are all these people doing here?”
“Um, these people are the members of Paramore…you know, the band you’re having play at your Sweet Sixteen?”
My eyes bugged. “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!” I whispered harshly at her, squeezing her arm so tight she lost circulation.
She pried my fingers off of her arm and shoved me up the first couple stairs. “No, I’m not kidding. Just go change, Little Miss Heartbreaker!”
Grah, she calls me a heartbreaker too? Ugh why must her and Nick switch personalities as often as they do? It’s utterly confusing and über annoying.
I sighed as I pulled on black skinny jeans and a spaghetti strap tank top. I fixed my hair and brushed my teeth and then went downstairs, where my sister was…um, “entertaining” our guests.
“And that’s how she deals with breakups!” I heard her squeal. I felt my face turn a dark shade of red and I refrained from punching her in the gut as I pushed her out of the living room that the members of Paramore now occupied.
The color of my face returned to normal. “So sorry about that, she’s…um, something.”
Hayley smiled. “Is that really how you deal with breakups? It’s so hardcore.”
“Actually, yes. I don’t know what possessed me to start a habit like that, but it’s so much fun.”
“I should really try that sometime,” she agreed, and her band mates looked at her strangely. “What? It sounds cool! It also sounds like an awesome idea for a song, don’t you think?” And with that, they all nodded their heads in agreement.
I smiled widely. “Wow, thanks!”
“We should write it today. We could play it at your party, too, if you want,” Josh added.
“Sure, I love writing,” I replied.
Zac started spazzing, drumming randomly. I figured he’d found a beat for the song. And I was completely correct. “I’ve got an idea for the beat!” He exclaimed.
Jeremy, Josh, and Zac started contemplating different things, and Hayley started talking to me again. “Should we get started planning the party?”
Oh, did I forget to mention they were also helping me plan the party? This is why I love having famous friends…of which I don’t know why I’m speaking of.
If that makes sense.

realization.
After a few long, but extremely fun, hours planning my Sweet Sixteen with Hayley, Josh, Jeremy, and Zac of Paramore, they had to leave to go do a soundcheck for their concert.
I put the notebook (full of lists, sketches, prices, etc relating to the party) down on the couch and got up to make a smoothie. I don’t know what possessed me to do that, but I was really in the mood for one but didn’t want to go out. I alerted Taylor, but she declined my offer to make one for her. I shrugged my shoulders and got out the strawberries, bananas, and ice to make my smoothie. I filled the glass container on the mixer with water, and added the ingredients. I put the top on the container and was about to press the START button when the doorbell rang.
Why is the doorbell always ringing when I’m just about to do something? It’s annoying and ironic.
“TAYLOR, DOOR!” I yelled.
“CAN’T, BUSY!” She replied. I groaned.
I walked to the front door and pulled the edge of the curtain away from one of the side windows to see who it was. I think it shocked me just as much as it shocked Taylor when she came over.
I opened the door. “Hi…Cody,” I said awkwardly. “What are you doing here?”
“Can I talk to Taylor?” He seemed anything but happy to talk to me. Figures; and I can’t say I disagree with his intentions.
“Um, sure…TAY, YOU HAVE A VISITOR!” I yelled into the dining room, where Taylor was lounging. Don’t ask me why she was lounging in the dining room; she’s just a very odd person.
She pranced into the foyer and pushed me out of the way of the door when she saw Cody. As soon as they laid eyes on each other, it was like a magnetic field. They were glued together and I couldn’t pry them apart. I don’t know why I was even trying.
Before going down to the basement to fetch a crowbar, I decided to go back and make my smoothie. But then the doorbell rang AGAIN. But this time it wasn’t the one on the front door. It was the one on the sliding door in the back (leading to our double deck). I wasn’t even aware we had that until I wandered around mindlessly searching for the sound. I only realized it was the back door because it was transparent and I saw Nick—of all people—outside.
I sighed, hiding my anger and annoyance as I unlocked and slid the door open a couple inches. It was just side enough to fit my head out, so I stuck it out to talk to him. “WHAT in the world are YOU doing here?”
He put his hand on the back of his neck. “I wanted to talk.”
“About WHAT? What IS there to talk about? I think we said everything already.”
He was taken aback, but still persisted. “About everything…”
I softened a little at his courage to come back over here. “Okay then, talk. This is the second time I’ve been interrupted from making my smoothie, so make it snappy.”
“Can I come in?”
I scrunched my eyebrows, a little shocked by how forward he was. But I shrugged my shoulders and opened the door. He slowly walked inside, and I shut it behind him. I fast-walked into the kitchen and stood behind the blender.
“You have 30 seconds,” I said, laughing a little. He smiled. I put my finger lightly on the START button and silently counted the seconds.
“Well, I wanted to apologize for the way I acted. I guess I couldn’t accept that you liked a lot of guys and stuff, and I just let my anger get to me. I’m sorry for insulting you and making my brothers mad at you, and the truth is—“
He was cut off abruptly by my finger pressing the START button. “Time’s up!” I said loudly over the blending, laughing. He smiled what looked like a forced smile and then put his hands in his pockets. After I was done blending, I offered Nick a smoothie. He declined.
“Man, what is it with people and smoothies today?!” I joked. He smiled again and looked more relaxed, but then tensed up when I asked him what he was going to say when I cut him off.
“Uh…um…nothing,” he stuttered. I was a little suspicious, but didn’t say anything. “I’ve got to go,” he finished.
I walked him to the front door, but then realized—the hard way—that Taylor and Cody were still super-glued together. I gagged and Nick stared at them weirdly before following me to the back door again.
“Are we cool?” He asked, stepping out the door and standing on the deck.
I stared at him for a few seconds. “Sure, we’re cool.” He smiled a toothy grin and walked off the deck. I slid the door closed and leaned my back against it. I sighed.
I love his smile. And his voice. And his eyes.
That’s when I realized it.
I’m in love with Nicholas Jerry Jonas.

Haha thanks guys! Here's the next chapter:
girlfriend?!
I don’t know what twisted fairytale I’m living in right now, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
And I don’t know what possessed me to actually like Nick that way, but…I don’t know. I thought about everything he’s done for me, how well I know him, and how Taylor was completely right about him—he does look at me “differently” and acts a little “differently” around me.
My mind was filled with all kinds of thoughts. It felt like the room was spinning. I closed my eyes, hoping the feeling would go away. But it followed me into my dreams.
Maybe it was a sign. Maybe I was delusional. Maybe I was in denial.
Or maybe it was all real—my feelings, my thoughts, my actions.
It’s confusing and complicated. I don’t know what to make of any of it, so I attempted the impossible.
I tried to pry Taylor off of Cody…or the other way around, if you saw it from the other direction. I pushed and pulled and still got nothing. So I attempted a different strategy. Scaring her off of him.
I screamed bloody murder. She jumped away from him, completely freaked. She turned around and was panicking, and I explained that I just wanted to talk to her. She dismissed Cody (which was rather rude, in my mind) and I dragged her into the living room.
I sat her down on the couch and began rambling. “Tay, I need your advice. You know how you said that Nick looked at me funny and acted weird around me before? Well, I just realized that and I think I like him too…I mean, I don’t know. He’s done so much for me, been there for me through all my ups and downs, and hasn’t given up on me. He came over today—while you and Cody were eating each other’s faces in the open doorway—and apologized…he explained everything, and just tried to make it all right again. I forgave him and also apologized, and then when he smiled at me…it was like heaven. I don’t know why, but suddenly I’m starting to love his eyes, his smile, his hair, his voice…everything about him. What do I do?”
She smiled proudly. “Told you so, told you so!” She squealed happily, pointing a finger in my direction.
I tapped my foot and she snapped back into reality. “Look, you should tell him how you feel. At least before another girl—for him—or another guy—for you—comes along, you know? Go over there right now and tell him you like him!”
I rolled back and forth from my heels to my toes. “I don’t know, Tay…”
“What, are you too chicken?”
“No, it’s just…we just got back on good terms and I don’t want to wreck that. You know?”
“No, actually, I don’t. You know I’ve always been one to jump right into a relationship.”
“True.”
“But you should still tell him. What if he finds another girl and you get jealous?”
“He won’t find another—“
“Go, or I’ll force you to.”
“Alright, alright, I’m going! Gosh!” I jogged out the front door and to Nick’s house. And just as I was about to ring the doorbell, some random girl—of whom I do not know—pushed me out of the way and acted all “I’m better and hotter than you” (even though, if I do say so myself, neither one of those things was true). God, rude much?
She rang the doorbell and I raised an eyebrow. Who was this girl and what was she doing at the Jonas’ house?
The door opened, and I was surprised to see Nick hug the girl and start getting all flirty. I hid behind a tree and my jaw dropped when he kissed her cheek.
No way. NO WAY. NO. FREAKING. WAY!!
HE ALREADY HAS A GIRLFRIEND. AND SHE’S NOT EXACTLY WHAT I CALL CHARMING AND POLITE. ARE YOU FLIPPING KIDDING ME?!?!
As soon as the door shut, I stormed off. I swung the front door of my house open and started screaming at Taylor. “I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU!!” I groaned really loudly and then she asked what was wrong.
“WHAT’S WRONG? THAT’S ALL YOU CAN SAY?! HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND, TAYLOR. A GIRLFRIEND!! AND SHE’S QUITE THE A**HOLE, IF I MUST SAY SO MYSELF!”
“So why do you hate me?” She whined.
“BECAUSE…because you were right,” I said quietly, tears slowly dripping down my face. Taylor walked up to me and pulled me into a sisterly hug, and I accepted it. After I let go of her, we offered me a small container of Häagen Dazs, but I declined. I sulked upstairs into my room and blasted “Misery Business” by Paramore. I wished that Hayley could’ve been over right then…I felt like I needed to talk to someone other than my sister.
I cried into my pillow, and secluded myself to my room for the rest of the day, ignoring my parents’ and my sister’s pleads.
I cried myself to sleep that night.

Oh, and, sorry guys, but there's only two more chapters of this :P Sorry I always end FFs so quickly, but I have to. I'm going to be busy and there's other things in my life I have to do. So, sorry, but here are the last two chapters:
you didn't see what was right in front of you!
The next day, I decided to be brave and confront Nick. I went over to his house and knocked a few times on the door. No answer. I knocked louder. Still no answer. I rang the doorbell just about a thousand times and then finally someone answered the door. It was Kevin.
“What the…? Lauren? What are you doing here?” He seemed surprised…maybe Nick didn’t tell him we were on good terms again.
“Um, well I came to talk to Nick.”
His face went a little paler than normal. “Oh, Nick? Um…he’s…busy right now…”
“Busy with what?”
“Stuff…”
“Okay, tell me or I go all kung-fu on you,” I held up my hands and lifted one leg for emphasis.
He backed away one step. “I don’t think you want to know.” He moved in front of where Nick was
“Why not? I’m his best friend, so I deserve to see—“
Kevin moved out of the way and I saw what he didn’t want me to see.
Nick and his new girlfriend were…kissing. And not only that—they were almost making out.
I felt like I was going to throw up. And Kevin could see that. “Want to take a walk?” He asked politely. “It’ll take your mind off of things.”
I couldn’t stop staring wide-eyed at Nick and the girl. HOW he could ever like a girl like THAT was completely mind-boggling.
Kevin pushed me away from the door and walked outside with me. We sat down behind one of the huge oak trees in their yard.
“Why?” I squeaked.
“Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t see anything about her that’s likeable, so I don’t get what Nick sees in her.” He must’ve noticed my traumatized, confused and upset expression, because then he added, “Maybe he was trying to make you jealous.”
I stared at him, acting confused. “What? Me, jealous? Are you kidding? Psh. Psh…psh.”
He didn’t buy it. “I knew it. I knew it, I knew it! You like him, don’t you?”
I sighed and gave up. “Alright, I do. I like Nick. And yesterday…I was going to tell him, until that a**hole had to come along and shove me into a bush.”
“She did that to you?!”
“Well, I kind of went into the bush myself, but she pushed me out of the doorway so she could be ‘first’. I hate her guts, you know that?”
“I know that, and I completely agree.”
I smiled. Kevin always knew how to make me feel better, like the best older brother I never had—I got Taylor instead. But then again, she does help sometimes…whatever.
I’m too focused on why Nick would choose such a b*tch like that girl over me.
And I got my answer when I heard the front door open, the girl say goodbye (her voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me), and Nick call out for Kevin. Hmm, I guess he noticed SOMETHING.
Kevin stood up and walked out from behind the tree. “What were you doing back there?” Nick asked.
“I don’t know…go see for yourself,” he replied angrily, and I heard Nick walking over to the tree. I was still crying, so I didn’t have to act when Nick saw me back there.
I buried my head in my knees, still sobbing, and saw him come around the side of the tree from the corner of my eye.
“L-Lauren? Is that…is that you?” He asked quietly. He sat down next to me, and our shoulders brushed. I didn’t move though.
I still sobbed, not responding. “What’s wrong?” He asked, even quieter. I felt him lightly put his hand on my shoulder.
I shrugged it off and raised my head up to look at him. I stared at him furiously, my red eyes still teary. “What do you THINK is wrong?!”
He was taken aback. “I don’t know, Lauren. Just tell me.”
“When did SHE come along?!”
That’s when he realized it and I could tell he felt totally horrible, which is what I wanted. “You…you saw?”
“I saw more than I needed to, Nick. You were almost eating each other’s faces. WHY?!”
“I…she…and you…why do you even care, huh?! I thought you didn’t like me?” He tried to be all tough, but I broke through it.
“OH, SO THAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO GO BEHIND MY BACK AND FIND SOME SL*TTY A-HOLE AND FLAUNT IT IN MY FACE?!?! NICK, YOU ARE SUCH A SELFISH JERK!! AND YES, I DO LIKE-LIKE YOU, BUT YOU WERE TOO BUSY PRETENDING THAT YOU DIDN’T STOP AND SEE WHAT WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! ” I screamed in his face, more tears falling. I jerked myself up and sprinted home, wiping my eyes every few seconds.
Taylor didn’t bother asking what happened, she just let me run upstairs. I knew my parents would be concerned, but I trusted that Taylor would tell them. And she did. I’m assuming she also told them to stay away from me, because no one even tried to approach me for the next couple hours.
I finally cried myself dry and looked at the clock. 3:13 PM. Ugh.
I stood up and walked downstairs. I informed a concerned Taylor that I was going for a walk through town, and asked her to tell Mom and Dad. She nodded and gave me a little encouraging smile. I tried to smile, but frowned instead.
I flung open the door and started walking to town.
♪
not exactly my perfect ending, but...
After a long walk, I was in the middle of downtown. I looked to my right, and saw shops. I looked back down and saw the sidewalk. I heard commotion coming from the left, so I looked left. But it only made my heart wrench more. I had forgotten there was a carnival today.
I watched as happy couples shared cotton candy, held hands, went on rides together, laughed, and just had more plain stinking fun than me.
I looked back down at the sidewalk, finding an interesting rock and kicking it around. I couldn’t cry, and I wouldn’t out here anyways.
I kept looking back and forth from the carnival to my reflection in different car windows.
I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Nothing ever seems to go right, everything always goes wrong. I can never have any kind of relationship and have it last longer than a few weeks, a few months at the very most.
What is so repulsing about me? Is it the way I dress? The way I style my hair? The way I talk? Is it my features? Or is because I’ve never kissed any of my boyfriends?
Alright, I admit it. I’ve never kissed any of them. I never wanted to. The time didn’t seem right to kiss any of them ever, anyways. Plus, they were all disgusting jerks too.
I continued kicking the intriguing rock on the hard cement until I heard something. A rumble—thunder, perhaps? I looked up at the sky and then a bright and quick flash blinded me for a few seconds—lightning. Great, now when does the rain come?
I guess the rain wasn’t that far behind; it started down pouring a few seconds after the lightning flash. But I didn’t care. I’d much rather be outside in the rain than inside alone and depressed. I mean, who wouldn’t?
Running my fingers through my soaking wet, stringy hair, I tried to remember the good old days. When Nick wasn’t such a jerk. When we were still the best of friends and nothing ever came between us. When I didn’t like-like Nick.
I sighed. As if.
I found a bench and decided to sit down on it. I looked around mindlessly, not avoiding people’s stares. Then when I looked to my left, I saw something unbelievable.
Someone was running through the immense gathering of people, in my direction. Someone…Nick.
I refrained from standing up and sprinting in the other direction though. I actually wanted to see him, which made no sense since he just completely tore me apart with his new girlfriend.
“Lauren!” He called. “Lauren, Lauren!” When he got closer to me and saw me, he slowed down and stood still.
I stood up from the bench and turned to face him. “What? Why aren’t you with your new girlfriend?”
“I broke up with her.”
I gasped. I didn’t mean to make him break up with her…well, okay, maybe I did but… “Why?” I whispered.
“Because I guess I was too busy pretending that I didn’t stop and see what was right in front of me,” he whispered, stepping closer to me. And the next thing I know, his lips crashed into mine.
We kissed for a long time, and then when we released, I was happier than ever. My eyes were still closed when I noticed he put his jacket around my shoulders, as he must’ve noticed I was shivering.
I opened my eyes and smiled at him. He smiled back, a toothy one, too. We stood there staring at each other for a few more seconds.
“Now, let’s go home,” he said quietly, taking my hand and intertwining our fingers.
I nodded and he started running. I followed, keeping pace next to him, until we got to his car.
He opened my door for me like the gentleman he is, and I got in. He got in on his side, and started the car.
We drove off, away from the town, lightning and thunder crashing behind us. Not exactly my perfect ending, but still amazing.
I looked at him as he was driving and sighed. I love Nicholas Jerry Jonas.
THE END.

Hehe off-topic: My hands are shaking a little from drinking Red Bull (for the very first time!)...Sugarfree, of course. I finally got my mom to let me try it. It tasted a little like cherry cough medicine though :P My mom was disgusted by it, but I kinda liked it. Haha alright, enough off-topicness.
