- chapter O N E -

It was one day before school started. I was nervous, yet excited at the same time. I took my iPod out of the drawer, put my headphones on, turned my iPod on, and selected a song. Music always calmed me. I was rudely interrupted when my little sister, Sierra, came banging on the door. "What?" I yelled.
"Mom wants you to come downstairs!" she yelled.
I sighed, paused my iPod, and went downstairs. "What?" I said rudely, immedeately regretting it.
She gave me a look. "Sit down," she said, gesturing towards the couch. As I sat down, she started talking. "I think we need a new start. You know...with everything going on. The kids at Sierra's school, my job, and your...everything." Oh, thanks, Mom. So I'm the bad one in the family. "You like big cities, right?"
I nodded suspiciously.
"Good. We're going to New York."
My mouth fell open. New York? "Where in New York?" I stammered.
"Right in the heart of the city. I got an apartment by Times Square."
I widened my eyes. I couldn't believe it.
"You're kidding."
"I'm not," she said smiling.
"I LOVE YOU, MOM!" I screamed, jumping up and down. "But school starts tomorrow...?"
"I already called the school and told them you wouldn't be coming this year."
"Okay."
That immedeately made me think of Cassie. I would miss her so much, and she would be devasted. She was pretty much my one and only friend.
Mom noticed the sadness in my eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
She knew I was lying.
"I'm gonna miss Cassie."
"Oh honey, I know you will... but you can stay in contact with her."
"Yeah," I shrugged. "I'm gonna go to her house," I said, starting for the door.
"Take your cellphone!" my mom called after me.
I rolled my eyes. She didn't understand that I was fifteen, and that I wouldn't get hurt or anything. I could take care of myself. And so of course, I didn't take it. Cassie's house was only three houses down from mine, I wouldn't need it anyway.
I got there sooner than I expected, and somehow I ended up running. I didn't even have to ring the doorbell, I went to their house so much, her dad was used to me just walking up to Cassie's room.
"Hey, Jerry," her dad said. I cringed as he said my name. I hated it. Why couldn't my mom name me like, Jenny or something? But noooo. I was stuck with a guy's name.
"Hey," I said, walking upstairs. When I got up, I went into Cassie's room. She was sitting on the bed, staring at the ceiling.
"Yo," I said. She jumped and started breathing hard, putting her hand on her chest.
"You scared me," she said, laughing.
"Sorry. Hey, I have to tell you something. It's like... important."
"Shoot."
"I-I-I'm... moving."
She wasn't shocked yet. "To where?"
"Manhattan."
"No."
"Yeah. I'm not kidding."
"Wow." Her eyes started watering up. I hugged her, and she started bawling. "You don't know how much I'm gonna miss you."
"I'm gonna miss you, too," I said.
"When are you moving?" she said in between sobs.
"Tomorrow."
She got out of my embrace, and looked me in the eyes. "You could have told me."
"Cassie... I don't want to fight right before I leave. And my mom just told me like, thirty minutes ago."
"And you're like, not bawling?" she said.
"Well, my mom got an apartment right next to Times Square. So that's pretty awesome," I said.
"Beast!" she exclaimed. See, this is what I loved and hated about Cassie. Her moods changed so fast. "Times Square?"
"Yeah," I said, nodding.
"Luckyyyy! I'll have to visit you sometime."
"Of course!" I said.
"Do you know how much fun you're gonna have?"
"Oh yeah," I said. "I can see it now... downstairs at the coffee shop, I'll see Angelina Jolie everyday. We'll be best friends, but then I'll start dating Brad, she'll get really mad, and I'll be in all the magazines for being the third wheel causing Brangelina to break up."
She giggled. "Can I like... come to the airport with you?"
"Pshhh, yeah."
"O-" she said, but was interrupted by the phone ringing. She looked over to her bedside where a phone was, and said, "It's your mom." I sighed and picked it up. "Yeah?"
"You have to come home now, sweetie, we're leaving really early tomorrow morning."
"Kay, bye," I replied.
"Crap, I gotta go, " I said to Cassie. "Come to my house at like... 5 AM tomorrow? Cause the flight's at like...hold on. Lemme call my mom back." I called her back and found out that we were leaving the house at 6. "Yeah, come at 5."
"Five?!"
"Yeah, we're leaving at six."
"Okay..." she said. "Well, bye," she said, getting up to hug me.
I walked out the door.
In 24 hours I would be in a new house. A new state. A new environment. A new... everything.

Yeah... I know that chapter's boring, but I promise it'll get better. XD This is just the beginning.

- chapter T W O -

Of course, I didn't sleep at all. I was way to... I don't know. Nervous, I think. I couldn't quite put my finger on the feeling.
My alarm clock went off at 4:30 AM. I yawned and rubbed my eyes. I stayed in bed for about two more minutes, but then forced myself up. In aoubt three hours I would no longer live in crummy old North Dakota.
I picked out this (http://shopjessicalouise.com/girlytank.html) tank top, these (http://www.hollisterco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10251&catalogId=10201&productId=422227&langId=-1&categoryId=12623&parentCategoryId=12552&colorSequence=02) jeans, and these (http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/store/product.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302028393&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442176702&bmUID=1214755097013) shoes. I had already packed the night before, so I didn't need to worry about that. I went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, took a shower, and all that stuff you do when you're getting ready.
I got downstairs at about 5. My mom was already awake, busy packing her stuff. Cassie wasn't here yet.
My mom noticed me just then. "Oh, hi!" she said in a rushed voice. "You excited?"
"Sure," I replied. And, that was the truth. I guess.
"Good. I am too," she said, beaming. She sat down on the couch and nervously crossed and uncrossed her legs.
Then, Cassie walked in the door, not smiling. "Cass!" I said, running to hug her.
"Hey, Cassie," my mom said as soon as she came in.
"Hi," she said glumly. My face saddened when I noticed her sadness. My mom sulked as well, but probably only because we were.
God, did time fly fast. In just an hour, we were already in the car, on our way to the airport. Cassie stared out the window, fighting back tears, I could see. I wasn't quite as sad as she was... yet.
The car ride was awkwardly silent. Sure, we all said a few words and talked about a few things, but that's pretty much it. We finally got to the airport after what seemed like forever. I got out of the car, and Cassie helped me carry my three suitcases in. I hadn't even packed three-fourths of my clothes. I pretty much only packed the essentials, and some really cute stuff that I needed to have.
Then, there it was. I absolutely broke down, and in public. So did Cassie.
"I am going to miss you so much, Cassidy Marie Shepherd," I said.
She laughed through her tears. "Ugh, don't call me that."
We hugged each other tightly. I felt like I was losing something, like a piece of my life. I don't know how I would go along without her. She was my best friend.
"Don't worry, I'll call you as soon as we land," I said, trying to cheer her up a little.
More tears fell out of her eyes, as did with me.
"Flight 396 is now boarding," we heard someone over the intercom say.
"That's ours," my mom said.
I gave Cassie a tight squeeze. "See you... later," I said. It didn't sound as bad as "Bye" or something.
"Bye," she said, sobbing.
I walked towards our gate, and right before she was out of sight, I waved to her, and cried inside myself.
"Off to New York!" my mom said.
"Yeah," I replied.
And in three hours, we landed in the Big Apple.
