Chapter *1*









Cassie sat in her room staring blankly at her math homework. “y=x+13(x-72)” She said aloud as she impatiently bit on her pencil. She didn’t understand why on earth she was in the school that she was. First thing, She wasn’t that bright, and for sure didn’t like to “Motivate” herself. Secondly, it was a private school, just off of Hollywood blvd. It was filled with teen celebrities and complete snobs. Though she had to admit, there were a few decent people there. Only a few. Her best friends, Lexy and Kaytie were the two people she could count on most.
Cassie threw her notebook across her room frustrated with her math. She noticed her long sleeve shirt fall back as she threw it. Revealing her scars from the past. She regretted being so dumb. She had just hurt herself physically to relieve the emotional pain. Thinking back to it, it made no sense to her.
She tugged at her sleeve, ashamed of her scars and lay back in her bed. She grabbed her iPod from her nightstand and shoved the headphones into her ears. She became lost in a trance. Her body was immobile, and her room shaking with the beat of her loud rock and roll music.
She snapped back to reality as she saw her mother walk into her bedroom. She pulled her headphones from her ears and smiled.
“What’s crackin’?” She said in her dorky voice.
“I wanted to tell you that your dad wants to see you this weekend.”
Cassie’s smile faded. “No!” She said bluntly.
“You can’t avoid him forever…”
“Watch me.” Cassie said purposely looking past her mother, and focusing on the doorknob behind her.
“Cass…” Her mother just sighed deeply and walked out of her room without another word.
As much as Cassie loved her dad, she couldn’t and wouldn’t see him right now. She refused to.
Cassie followed her mom after a moment and met up with her in the kitchen.
“I’m sorry.” Cassie said as she approached her mom, who was furiously cooking.
“I wish I could make things better…” She said as she continuously stirred some sauce.
“I know Mom. I don’t expect you to.” Cassie said as she threw away some of the trash her mom left behind.
“I just don’t want you to grow up without a father.”



I know its short, but I had to get some background in first.
Promise the next chapter will be up to Cassie Standards.

Chapter *2*

Cassie awoke to her alarm clock the next morning. She crawled out of bed, and directly headed for the bathroom to wake herself up with a nice shower. She got out, got dressed in her usual, typical outfit; a long sleeved band tee, jeans, and dried her hair. After applying makeup and grabbing something for breakfast, Cassie quickly headed out the door.
“Bye Mom!” She called as she grabbed her car keys and book bag. She wasn’t sure she wanted to go to school today, but decided against skipping since Lexy and Kaytie wouldn’t do it with her ever again. Not since they had got caught the last time, and it completely freaked out the two girls who of course, were typical good students.
She walked over to her red car, opened the door and got in. She inserted her key and turned the ignition making her car roar as it started. She backed slowly out of her driveway, fidgeting with her radio while doing so, and pulled out into the street.
In a matter of minutes she pulled up at her large, sophisticated looking school. She parked her car in the student parking lot, and grabbed her book bag from the passengers seat, and began to walk to the front doors of her school.
Outside on the steps was where everyone who was anyone gathered. She walked up the first few steps and looked around for her friends. A minute later she spotted Kaytie’s red hair, and ran over to the corner of the stairs, where her friends all stood in a circle. Cassie looked around the group to see who all was there, and who all had skipped the day. Cassie smiled as she looked around, surprised to see everyone there.
“Hey guys.” Cassie said, realizing that she was just standing there. They were all obviously very lost in conversation because they all shut up the moment she let the words escape her mouth.
“Uh?” Cassie said awkwardly. “What were we talking about?” She asked intrigued by everyone’s sudden silence.
“Lexy was just gushing over Joe again.” Alexa said, as Lexy hit her arm with a slap.
“I was NOT!” She said loudly as she stomped her feet in frustration.
“Oh Joe! Oh how your deep brown eyes pull me in, like the earths gravitational pull!” Bailee said imitating, or making fun of Lexy.
Cassie noticed Vicky look down at the ground, Cassie knew she had a crush on Joe as well, she just didn’t make it obvious, unlike her best friend.
“Oh shut up! Kevin is walking this way!” Kaytie yelled over the group.
As if on que, everyone shut up as the three brothers walked past them.
“Nick…” Alexa and Bailee said sighing together. Cassie found it funny that the two best friends could manage liking the same guy.
“Kevin…” Kaytie said once the boys were far enough away.
“Why is Joe SO cute?” Lexy said as she admittedly gushed over him.
Cassie noticed Vicky give Lexy the death glare, but Lexy purposely avoided her gaze. The two girls fought over him all the time, even though neither of the two actually ever said one word to him.
Cassie rolled her eyes at every single person in their group. She was the only one out of her friends who wasn’t crushing on one of the three brothers.
“They’re all way out of our league! Just give up!” Cassie said harshly to her friends. In response they all shot her the death glare. Cassie held up her hands in defense.
“Listen! I’m sorry but they are. Besides, they are, all three of them, complete snob, want to be rockstars, who think they can get everything they want.” They all once again shot her that evil glare, and all began ranting at once. She only got bits and pieces of everything they said.
“How do you know that?”
“They’re nice boys!”
“You’re just jealous.”
The last one Cassie heard made her laugh. Jealous? She thought differently. Cassie laughed half-heartedly and sighed.
“I’ve got to get to class!” She said as she turned away from her group of outraged friends, and began to make her way to her first period class.
As she approached her English class she noticed the snob crowd hanging just outside the door to her class. She attempted to sneak in, unnoticed, but failed. She heard snickers come from behind her.
“Change up your wardrobe once in awhile!”
“Freak!” And, was followed by a lot of giggles.
Cassie didn’t bother to turn and look back at who said it, and continued to walk to her desk. She sat down just as the bell rang, and pulled out her English folder, ready to start.
English was her favorite subject, and she loved to write. Which made her weird on many different levels. She leaned back in her chair and glanced around the room. Unfortunately none of her friends were in this class with her. She noticed the brothers, whom she had just been complaining about, chatting it up with the same group of people who had just called her a freak.
“Figures.” She thought to herself. Her friends would see what she saw eventually. She looked back up at the front of the classroom where her teacher now stood; ready to begin the day’s lesson. She sighed as she slouched back in her chair and attempted to pay attention.
And hour and a half later, she walked out of her English class. She didn’t want to go to math. Her math teacher always made her feel stupid for not understanding anything.
She was so lost in her thoughts about hating math, that she jumped as she ran into someone, knocking their books from their hands. Cassie knelt down and picked up the books. She stood back up and then realized who was standing in front of her.
“Sorry.” The middle brother said as he took the books from her hand.
Cassie gave him a disgusted look, and replied with a, “Yeah. Whatever.”, and walked off to her math class.
After her morning classes, she ran to lunch and caught up with her group of friends who were all sitting at the same table that they always sat at.
“Rough day?” Lexy asked as she approached. They made room for her to sit next to Lexy and Kaytie.
Cassie obviously had an annoyed look on her face for everyone to read her that easily.
“Just a frustrating one.” She said recalling her math class, and the Joe incident.
Cassie noticed that everyone stopped listening to her, and were all staring at a table across the aisle.
“Of course.” Cassie said snapping everyone’s attention back to her.

Chapter *3*










Cassie drove home after school with Lexy, who lived just a couple houses down from her. Lexy had barely spoken to her since they left school, and Cassie had a feeling why.
“Hey, listen. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t talk about your crush the way I do.” She looked over at her friend with sad puppy dog eyes.
“It’s just…you don’t even know him.”
Before Cassie could stop herself she blurted out, “Either do you!”
Lexy just looked away from her away, obviously annoyed with everything.
“I’m sorry.” She said once more.
Lexy looked back at her and smiled. “Its fine. You don’t have to like him. Its not like anything will ever happen between us. We’re on two whole different social levels.”
Cassie laughed a little and smiled as they turned the corner onto their block. Cassie gazed ahead and noticed a car in her driveway that wasn’t usually there.
“Oh god.” Cassie said as she hit her brakes.
“Whoa!” Lexy said as she practically hit her head on the dashboard. “What’s wrong?” She asked after she sat back up.
“Is that my dad’s car?”
“uh……..Oh gosh.” Cassie and Lexy looked at each other, unsure of what to do.
“What to go get something to eat? Coffee? Anything?” Cassie asked as she quickly sped past her own house.
“Well, I don’t have a choice now do I?” She said laughing.
“No, no you do not.”
As Cassie pulled into the South Side Café, they sat down in a booth and ordered a drink, and an order of fries.
“How long are we going to stall?” Lexy asked as she looked at the time on her phone.
“I have no idea…” Cassie said laughing as she sipped on her pop. Then she jumped as she felt her phone vibrate. She sighed as she saw that it was her mom. She flipped it open giving Lexy that pleading look of not wanting to go home.
“Hello?” Cassie said as she pressed send, answering the phone.
“Cassie! Where are you?”
“The café with Lexy.” Cassie said as she took a fry off the plate in front of her and ate it.
“You should be home…”
“Why?”
“Because I need you to help me with something.” She said, obviously lying.
“Whatever. Fine. I’m on my way.” She said giving in, knowing that there was no way around this without admitting that she and Lexy drove purposely from her house.
She hung up the phone, almost feeling guilty about getting an attitude with her mom, almost.
She looked at Lexy who was shoving the last of the fries in her face, and laughed.
“We have to go.”
“I figured that much out.” Lexy said laughing as she stood up, grabbing her purse.
As they drove home, they talked about the possibility of Cassie having to go to her dad’s house for the week. It killed her to think that, but she knew she couldn’t say no straight to his face, she always got her mom to say no for her. Though, there was no getting out of this one.
As they rounded the corner she still saw that black car sitting in her driveway. Taunting her. She drove past her house, and dropped Lexy off, trying to stall as much as possible.
“I could have walked from your driveway you know.” Lexy said laughing, even though she understood.
“Shut it!” Cassie said smiling.
She pulled away from Lexy’s house, and drove around the block until she wound up at her house once more. She pulled into the driveway, being careful not to block in her dads car, which she wanted to leave as soon as possible.
Approaching her door, Cassie began to breathe deeply to calm herself. She turned the doorknob and slowly walked into her house.
“Mom! I’m home!” She said as she walked around her house searching for he mother.
“In the kitchen!” She heard her mom call from across the house. There was something creepy about the kitchen; parents always talked in there, and it usually wasn’t something good. Cassie’s stomach began to turn as she made her way to the kitchen.
She saw her mom standing in the archway of the kitchen, looking at her with apologizing eyes. Cassie in return rolled her eyes as she stepped into the kitchen to see her dad standing there. He looked different than the last time she had saw him. His hair was longer, and he quite obviously, gained weight. It was amazing how much could change in five months.
“Hey!” Her dad said as she stood across the kitchen from him. She hated how he could act like everything was fine, when obviously it wasn’t.
“Hey…” Cassie said awkwardly as she jumped up onto the kitchen counter and sat down. She waited for her mom to try and make peace.
“So….” Her mom said as if she could read minds. “Your dad wants you to come spend a week with him.” She said finally, realizing that neither of us was going to talk.
“Why can’t he ask me himself?” Cassie said as she avoided making eye contact with her dad.
“Stop being stubborn. Do you want to or not?” Her dad said, practically scolding her.
“No no no no no no no no no no no” She repeated in her head.
“Yes.” Her father seemed just as shocked by her answer as she was. Without saying another word she ran off, upstairs to pack. She couldn’t believe how spineless she was. She really did not want to spend a week with him and his girlfriend. Not to mention his girlfriends kids, one who just so happened to go to her school, and be the leader of the snob crew. She sighed deeply as she plucked shirts off their hanger.
“What am I getting myself into?”

Chapter *4*



Cassie sat annoyed at her lunch table. She was the first one to get there today, because she didn’t feel like eating. She had been rude to everyone today, and she really didn’t mean to. The only people who actually understood were Lexy, Kaytie and sort of Alexa, because she as well has divorced parents. The night at her dads had been frustrating to say the least. The house she once called homed was completely changed, and she hated it. She didn’t even have her own room anymore; she had to share a room with Mackenzie. Which as you can imagine was the best experience of her life! Yeah, all she heard about all night was about who was going out with who, who broke up…and of course those Jonas Brothers that she was so sick and tired of hearing about. She smiled as her friends began to sit down at the table.
“Mood any better?” Kaytie asked as she sat down on the left side of her. Cassie shrugged.
“I’ll be fine At least I have school as an excuse to get away from my dad. I just can’t escape…. her.” Cassie said obviously looking at the table that was across the aisle from theirs.
“I heard her talking about having a sleep over type thing tonight.”
Cassie groaned. “Great, as if Mackenzie isn’t bad enough, Haley and Mandy will be there as well.”
Lexy, Alexa, Bailee and Vicky all say around the table at the same time.
“That’s rough.” Vicky said as she sat her tray down on the table.
“I know.” She said realizing that they had heard Kaytie and her conversation.
“Anyone want to come over?” She asked realizing that she didn’t want to stay alone with them. Immediately everyone started to name off reasons why they couldn’t. Some real, some lies. She knew they just didn’t want to be around those girls, because she didn’t either, though it seemed she didn’t have a choice.
“You all suck, just so you know.” Cassie said laughing, not offended that they didn’t want to stay with her.

Cassie sat on the bed in her pink and black room. It had once just been her room, and that was obvious by the many band posters on the wall, and the many CD’s stacked up by her stereo. Thought now if you looked around, you could tell two totally different people lived in that room. Mackenzie’s half was flower filled, and pictures of her and all her friends were taped up on the wall, obviously to hide the black painted wall. Her thoughts were scattered from her mind as the door opened loudly, and in walked Mackenzie with all her friends.
“Ugh, why don’t you go downstairs and hang out with your dad or something?” Mackenzie asked as she, Mandy, and Haley made their way over to her side of the room.
“As much as I’d love to leave this room, and you. I’d rather be here than with my dad. Sorry, don’t mind me” Cassie said as she lay back, and inserted her headphones into her ears, and began to turn out the three girls.
“She’s so weird…” Was the last thing she heard from them for a while.

Awhile later she woke up without her music playing in her ears. She sat up and looked at her ipod, which lay next to her now, lifeless. She looked over at the three girls, whom were all huddled around a phone, which was on speakerphone. Cassie strained her ear, curious to know who was so important.
“Okay! See you in a few!” She heard Mandy and Mackenzie say together happily. After they shut the phone closed the three girls finally acknowledged Cassie’s presence.
“Ugh, you would wake up right as they were coming over.”
Cassie, who was still curious, asked. “Who?”
Mackenzie laughed. “The Jonas Brothers.” As she said this Mandy and Haley squealed, and Cassie rolled her eyes not caring that much anymore.
“Does my dad know?” She asked, knowing her dad was always weird about being around the house, though she’d been gone for a while. Rules could have changed.
“Of course silly, why wouldn’t he?” Mackenzie said with a singsong voice that was extremely annoying.
Cassie shrugged and sat on her bed, leaning her back against her wall.
Just as she got comfortable, Cassie heard the doorbell downstairs.
“That was fast.” She murmured.
Haley laughed. “That’s because they only live a couple blocks away.”
Cassie rolled her eyes, of course. How could she not know that? Oh, that’s right, because she didn’t care.
After about two minutes of sitting on her bed, staring at her dead ipod, she heard people running up the stairs.
“Oh HEY!” She heard Tiffany, Mackenzie’s little sister say.
Cassie heard the brothers muster up a hi, and Mackenzie yelling at her sister to go away, then the door to their room opened, and all six of them piled in.
“God….” Cassie said quietly as she backed up into the corner of her room, obviously she had said it loud enough to get people attention because Mackenzie rolled her eyes, and Mandy and Haley, being the followers that they were did too.
“Guys, this is my…uh… my Mom’s boyfriends daughter.” Mackenzie said as she half introduced her.
“You go to our school right?” The youngest one said. The one Alexa and Bailee liked. Nick? Nick I think.
“Yeah, sadly.” Cassie said quietly replying to his answer, she could get an attitude with him, but he hadn’t done anything personally to her…yet.
“She’s that weird one I told you about!” Joe said loudly.
“The one who ran into you?” Kevin asked.
Cassie just rolled her eyes. “That’s me.”
In a way, she almost thought that they were going to be nice to her, but it was just Nick.
“Just act like she isn’t here.” Mackenzie said as she took the boys over to her side of the room. Cassie shrugged and stood up, and walked over to the computer that they had in their room, and began to charge her ipod so she would have something to do while she was being ignored.
She pulled out her phone, and started to text Lexy and Kaytie.
“Your crush is here! Save me? Come over? Flirt? Whatever, I just don’t want to be alone.” She sent the same text to both of her friends, and waited impatiently for them to reply. As she sat on the computer waiting for her ipod she drummed her hands against the desk.
“God! Can you stop?” Haley said, which surprised Cassie. She was usually the quiet one.
Cassie stopped, and pulled her ipod out of the computer hoping that thirty minutes was long enough to charge, and sat down and began listening to Seether.
It was going to be a long night if Lexy and Kaytie didn’t come over.

Chapter *5*









Cassie sat on her bed when she felt her phone vibrate. “We’re on our way.” It was a text from Kaytie, and a smile went across her face.
Cassie ran downstairs without a word, which probably made attention drawn to her by everyone in her room, but she didn’t care.
She skipped down her dad’s steep steps, and walked into his room where he lay on his bed watching TV with his girlfriend Nancy.
“Dad…” Cassie said getting his attention, though he has selective hearing, and she had to say his name three times before he finally looked at her.
“Kaytie and Lexy are coming over to spend the night.”
“You could have asked.”
“Sorry.”
“No.”
“What?” She asked confused.
“There are already six people in that room.”
“Seven.” She said correcting him, and adding herself in.
“Exactly.”
“It’s a big room!” She said in defense. “Plus, I’m not going to sit in that room with them the entire night while they make me feel like crap.”
“What?”
“Nothing. Are the Jonas Boys staying the night?”
“Mackenzie said they were.”
Cassie just groaned as she walked to the front door, opened it and sat on the porch waiting for her friends.
Soon after a couple moments, Kaytie’s black car pulled in front of the house. Cassie ran to it, her bare feet hitting the ground hard.
“Thanks for coming SO much. You have no idea how out of place and lost I was.”
“Yeah yeah yeah. Where are the cute guys?” Lexy said as she got out of Kaytie’s car.
“Hi to you too!” Cassie said jokingly as they all walked back into the house, avoided her dad and made their way up to her room.
Lexy and Kaytie had been best friends for the longest time, and they had known her dad before his girlfriend came into the picture and changed everything. So, they knew where Cassie’s room was, and knew how to navigate around the house blinded.
As they reached her room, Cassie slowly opened it and walked in, making the room even more crowded with all nine people.
“Are you serious?” Mackenzie said as she stood up from her bed.
“Apparently. This was my house before it was yours, I have the right to bring friends here!”
Lexy and Kaytie backed her up by nodding continuously.
“Whatever.” Mackenzie said as she walked back over to her group. Cassie noticed her two friends looking at Kevin and Joe, and she just sighed.
“Try and not make it look creepy when you check them out.” Cassie said quietly, but loud enough for the two of them to hear, and blush wildly.
“Who are you?” Cassie was a little confused by this, and turned around to see Kevin turned around looking at the three of them.
“I’m Lexy!”
“And, and. I’m Kaytie.” She said obviously trying to keep her cool.
“I’m Kevin…” He said as he smiled and turned around.
“They would be nice to you two. Is there something wrong with me?” She said laughing as she sat down on her bed with her friends.
“So, what are we doing tonight?” Lexy asked after an awkward moment of silence.
“Honestly, I haven’t an idea.” Cassie said laughing as she pretended to think deeply.
Then just as Cassie came up with the idea to leave, and drive around she realized Mackenzie was talking to her.
“What?” Cassie said realizing that she didn’t hear her.
“I said, do you want to play a game?”
Cassie couldn’t help but laugh at this.
“Not really.” But Lexy raised her hand excitedly.
“I do!” Cassie laughed and rolled her eyes.
“You would.”
“What do you have in mind?” Kaytie asked, obviously thinking the same way she was. She had something evil planned.
“Spin the bottle?”
Cassie laughed loudly.
“There’s not an even amount of boys and girls, besides what are we? Fifth graders?”
This made everyone laugh, including Mackenzie.
“I just don’t want you guys to be sitting over there awkwardly, and alone.”
Cassie rolled her eyes.
“I don’t know what your plan is, but whatever. We have nothing better to do.” Besides, Cassie knew her friends would like the idea of socializing with the Jonas Brothers.
“Are we honestly playing spin the bottle?” Lexy asked as she jumped off Cassie’s bed and sat in the floor.
“No. Lets just play hide and go seek.” Mandy said with a smile.
Cassie shrugged; at least she wouldn’t have to see Mackenzie’s face.
“Sure, whatever.”
“Then, I’ll be it.” Mackenzie said smiling.
Cassie stood up, and began thinking of places to hide. Her Lexy and Kaytie had an advantage over everyone, seeing as they knew this house like the back of their hand, though Lexy didn’t know her hand very well.
Cassie and Kaytie looked at each other, still not sure of what was going on, but she knew that it couldn’t be anything too horrible.
“Okay, on three I’ll close my eyes, and you all go hide. I’ll count to a hundred.”
Everyone nodded and began to run and search for a hiding place as soon as Mackenzie turned around and counted down from three.
Cassie, Kaytie and Lexy all split up. They knew the rules of playing hide and seek, no hiding with your friends. It was just against the rules.
Cassie walked around thinking of a super good place, though she wasn’t sure.
She walked into the bathroom, and saw her attic type place, which was more just like a crawlspace, and shook her head. Too easy.
She walked down the stairs quietly and walked into the kitchen and looked around. Then she remembered something. She walked over to the sink, and opened the cabinet underneath it and moved some of the cleaning supplies out of the way. She felt someone standing behind her and saw Nick.
“Uh, Hi!” She said as she opened the latch, that led to a basement, that wasn’t a basement. It was just extra storage space that no one used.
“Mind if I hide with you?” He asked as she crawled in. She looked around and shrugged.
“There’s enough room I guess.”
With that she scooted over and let Nick crawl in with her. “Shut the cabinet. Or else she’ll figure it out.”
Nick nodded.
“Good thinking.” As they shut the cabinet and the door that the crawled into, Cassie grabbed a piece of string and pulled it, turning the light on. Cassie smiled at Nick.
“She won’t find us in a million years.”
“Doesn’t she live here though?” He asked as he looked around the semi-dirty space.
“Yeah, but I’ve lived here longer. Chances are she knows nothing about this space. It used to be my favorite spot when I was little.” She said smiling widely, and then she realized that she was actually talking to Nick Jonas. One of the brothers she supposedly hated.
He wasn’t that bad looking, and he wasn’t as rude as his other two brothers.
“Listen… I know you probably don’t want to be in here with me. But, thanks.”
“For giving you a hiding spot in a stupid game?” Cassie asked dumbly.
Nick nodded. “And I’m sorry for my brothers, sometime they seem to slip into cliques, and be rude without thinking about it.”
Cassie smiled. “I didn’t notice…” She said sarcastically.
“They really are nice guys, they just have to get to know you.”
Cassie raised her eyebrow at him. “You don’t know me?” She said laughing.
“At least I gave it a shot. You seem pretty cool, and I love your room. Much better than Mackenzie’s side of the roo-”
He was cut off when the door overhead opened, and she saw Kaytie and Lexy standing there smiling.
“I knew you were in here!” Kaytie said smiling. She and Lexy then looked at Nick, and gave her a weird look. Cassie just shrugged.
“Did she find you two?” Cassie asked.
“Yeah, apparently she knows the house better than we thought!”
“Then go away! We’re hidden! Leave us be!” Nick said laughing as he shut the door on them.
Cassie laughed and helped him close it, but accidentally pulled the string that turned the light on and off, making it dark. She tripped and fell. She realized that she had knocked Nick over as well, and the two of them were laughing loudly. Cassie felt around, trying to find something to help pull her up, but managed to make her hand land on Nick’s curly hair. She smiled and then the lights flicked on.
“FOUND YOU!” She heard Mackenzie’s voice. “Oh god, what are you?”
She obviously was speechless about something, and then Cassie became aware to her surroundings. Her and Nick’s face were literally centimeters apart.
They both jumped, and stood up.
“What’s going on?” Mackenzie asked awkwardly.
“What?” Cassie asked.
“Nothing!” Nick said quickly.
They quickly crawled out of the space and looked at each other awkwardly.
“That didn’t look like nothing.” Mackenzie was now giving Cassie the death glare.
“For your information, it was nothing. Now if you excuse me, I’m going to go see my friends.” She said as she stormed past the evil one, and made her way to her room where Kaytie and Lexy sat on her bed smiling at her.
“Nick?” They both said the moment she walked into the room, obviously questioning the same thing she was in her mind.

Chapter *6*

Cassie awoke the next morning on her bed, with Lexy’s feet lying right next to her head, and Kaytie’s hand draped over her legs. It was awkward trying to fit three people into a twin-sized bed, but somehow they made it work. Mackenzie on the other hand made everyone of her guest sleep on the floor, and when Cassie looked down it just looked like a sea of blankets. She couldn’t see her carpet at all. She knew from experience that, that floor was not comfy at all.

As Cassie sat up, she obviously woke up Lexy and Kaytie.

“Good morning!” Cassie said to them cheerfully. They all three began to stretch.

“Cassie, you know you talked in your sleep last night right?” Lexy said laughing.

Cassie groaned. “Again?” Cassie had the tendency to talk in her sleep when she was confused, or when there were people sleeping over that she wasn’t used to.

Cassie looked around the room and carefully stepped around all the people on the floor. She accidentally stepped on someone’s hand. “Sorry.” She said softly as she realized that it was Nick. He turned in his blankets and looked up at her and smiled. Cassie quickly looked away and her, Lexy, and Kaytie all made their way to the door, and got out of the crowded room.

“Something is going on with you two.” Kaytie said trying to tease her.

“No, sorry. There isn’t.” She laughed and began to walk down the stairs. The downstairs of the house was quiet, filled with just the sound of her dads snoring.

“Want some cereal?” Cassie asked her two friends. Lexy and Kaytie both nodded and began to help themselves to some food.

“So anything happen last night that I missed? Did you two purposely hide with Joe and Kevin?” Cassie asked, knowing her friends well.

Cassie found her answer as both of her friends looked at the ground trying to hide their smiles.

“Me and Joe talked a lot.”

“Same here, ‘cept with Kevin.”

Cassie laughed. “Maybe something really could happen between you all.” She said smiling.

Lexy squealed excitedly and poured herself some cereal.

“Maybe something will, or did, happen with you and Nick?”

Cassie laughed. “Yeah right. Besides, I don’t like him.”

Just as Cassie said this she heard a couple sets of footsteps coming from the stairs. A moment later the three brothers appeared in front of them.

“At least you guys are awake.” Kevin said. His hair was perfect, even after just waking up. Joe and Nick on the other hand, both looked like they just got back from running a mile, minus the sweat.

“Nice hair.” Cassie commented. She wasn’t sure who she said it to though, Nick or Joe.

“Thanks freak.” Joe replied.

Cassie sighed, she just wasn’t even going to try and be nice to him.

There was no use. Cassie glanced at Lexy who obviously was surprised by Joe’s comment, but Cassie wasn’t at all.

Nick walked into the kitchen, looked at her and gave her a wide toothy grin, and began to look for food.

Cassie couldn’t help but wonder what was going on inside of Nick’s head. There was no way she liked him, and no way he liked her. It was just common sense.

After eating breakfast, and watching Lexy and Kaytie flirt with Joe and Kevin, the two decided that they had to leave. Cassie begged them to stay, but they said they couldn’t. Of course, this left Cassie alone with the brothers, until Mackenzie and her friends would wake up, which she knew from experience was around 2 o’clock or later.

“Lexy is pretty cool…” Joe said randomly.

“Uh? Where did that come from?” Cassie asked, almost afraid to talk to Joe.

“My mind?” He said with a little laugh, which made Cassie laugh.

“She is…pretty cool…”

“So is Kaytie…” Kevin chimed in, obviously just tuning into the conversation.

“You guys are scaring me with your randomness.” Cassie looked at Nick.

“Would you like to say anyone is cool Sir Nicholas?”

“No, not really. I’ll sit this one out.”

They all laughed, and Cassie was almost starting to feel less awkward around them.

Just as she flipped the channel on the TV, she noticed her dad standing in the archway of the living room.

“Uh, Morning?” Cassie said, choosing her words carefully.

Everyone shut up as her dad stood there, obviously angry.

“Do I look angry?” He asked.

Cassie didn’t know if this was a question she was supposed to answer.

“Kinda?” She asked scared

“Did you make enough noise last night?”

“I don’t know?” Cassie asked. She exchanged glances with the three brothers, who were sinking into their seats.

“I got no sleep at ALL!”

“I’m sorry!” Cassie said trying to get him to lower his voice; this is why she didn’t want to stay with her dad. He always made her feel like crap.

After rolling his eyes, and punching the wall dramatically, he walked out the house, slammed the door and drove off in his car.

Cassie just assumed that his girlfriend was already at work.

“Wow…” All three brothers said quietly after her dad left.

“Sorry about that…” Cassie said awkwardly.

“Is he always like that?” Nick asked quietly.

“Sometimes. It’s the reason I don’t live here. Specially when he gets drunk…it’s just not pretty.”

After a long awkward silence, Joe broke it by laughing randomly.

“What?” Kevin asked him.

“Nothing….I have a question though.”

“Yes?” Cassie said, assuming he meant for her.

“Does Lexy have a boyfriend?”

Cassie wanted to squeal. “No! No she does not!”

“Kaytie?” Kevin asked smoothly.

“Nope.” By this time her insides were screaming, and she wanted to call her two friends and scream at them, this was a good scream of course.

Cassie looked over at Nick, expecting him to ask about Mandy, or Haley or…anyone while the subject was up, but he just sat back in the leather couch smiling widely.



“We should probably go…” The brothers said after an hour of waiting for Mackenzie to wake up.

“Later…” Cassie said as she shut the door after the brothers walked out.

She grabbed her phone and called Lexy first, as her friend picked up the first thing she said was.

“OH MY GOODNESS!”
“What? Huh? I missed something.”

Chapter *7*




Cassie woke up in her bed. She had been really tired the night before and had gone to bed super early. She rolled over, yawned and sighed. She reached for her phone on the nightstand and realized that she had two text messages on her phone, the first one from Lexy, which read: “Hanging with the bf today. Wanna come?” Cassie smiled as she hit reply and told her friend yes.
The next one came from Kaytie, and read: “Me and Kevin are going to the movies. I’ll catch you and Lexy later.”
Cassie smiled, she was happy for her two best friends, both of who were dating one of the Jonas brothers. She rolled out of bed, getting slightly light headed from standing up too fast. She groaned as she made her way to the shower, and washed her annoyingly thick hair. She got out, dressed in her jeans and a black and white plaid shirt with a tank top underneath it.
Cassie walked into the kitchen, smiling at her mom.
“Any plans for today?” Her mother asked her as she fixed herself a bowl of cereal.
“Just hanging out with Joe, Lexy, and maybe Nick.”
Her mom said nothing except that she had to run to work, and took off in a dash. Cassie sighed as she ate her cereal in silence, and then went to do her hair.
As she looked herself over in the mirror, she shrugged, thinking that she looked presentable enough. Then she walked out of her house, got in her car and drove three houses down, to Lexy’s house and honked her car horn, and smiled as her friend came out, and got in the passenger’s side of her car.
“Hey you!” Cassie said smiling as her friend swung her purse around her shoulder, and buckled herself in.
“Hey!” Lexy said enthusiastically. “Do you know where Kaytie is?” Lexy asked as Cassie pulled away from her house.
“She sent me a text saying that her and Kevin were going to the movies, so we might see them later.”
Lexy just smiled and fell silent, Cassie turned on the radio because she didn’t like silence, it made her laugh…and not in a good way.
“Where are we going? Just to their house?” Cassie asked.
“Uh, yeah…I think so. Then I think after that Joe said we could just hang out, and play wiffle ball.”
Cassie laughed. “We ALWAYS play wiffle ball.”
Lexy shrugged, “What ever makes him happy, I guess.”
Cassie laughed once more, “Aw, how cute.” She said silently gagging.
“And, what about you and Nick?” Lexy said raising her eyebrows at her.
“What about us? We’re just friends.”
“He likes you, you know?”
Cassie shrugged, “He’s just my friend….” Cassie stopped and began thinking, “I’m not leading him on am I?”
Lexy looked at her confused, and then shrugged. “No, I don’t think…well…maybe just a little…” Lexy said as she looked at her with sad eyes.
Cassie rolled her eyes, “I don’t like him though. Do I have to tell him that?”
“No, just don’t flirt with him!”
Cassie laughed. “I don’t do it on purpose!!!”
Lexy nodded. “I know, I know…I just promised Joe that I would talk to you about. He doesn’t want to see his brother get hurt, or something.”
“Aw! Brotherly love.” Cassie found her smiling widely at the thought of Joe, and began to think that maybe she likes… She stopped herself and shoved the thought way in the back of her head, not wanting to even think that. Joe had become basically her best guy friend in the past two months, and she knew she didn’t like him. She didn’t like anyone. No, not even Nick.
As they pulled up to the Jonas household, Cassie noticed Joe outside in the front yard, running around with Frankie, trying to get something back from him. Cassie honked her horn, scaring Joe long enough for him to be distracted, and long enough for Cassie to scream, “Run Frankie! Run!” and with that the little Jonas ran off, and out of sight.
“You suck!” Joe said walking towards her parked car. Lexy ran over to him and gave him a hug, and a quick kiss on the lips. Cassie looked away, it was always awkward when her friends kissed their boyfriends, and Cassie wasn’t sure where she was supposed to look. After a moment, Cassie began walking past the couple, and sat down on the fancy porch swing. She loved the smell of the spring air; it was one of her favorite seasons. The sweet breeze blowing on her screamed, “summer is coming, summer is coming.” The sooner summer came, the sooner Cassie could be done with high school, and go to college.
After sucking in the beautiful day, she realized that her friends were talking to her.
“Huh?” She asked confused.
“We said….” Joe said starting the sentence. “Do you want to go pick Nick up with us at the recording studio?” Lexy said finishing it. Aw, how cute…they finish each other sentences.
“Uh, yeah. Sure. Wait…who is driving?”
“Me…” Joe answered.
“No.”
“What?” Joe asked confused.
“I’ve seen you drive. I drive, or I stay here.” Cassie said defensively.
“Fine, guess I can’t use your car if you don’t come with us anyways.”
“I win.” Cassie said proudly.
As they walked back to her car, Joe and Lexy sat in the back seat, so they could be together and cuddle, or something.
Cassie rubbed her eyes hard, as her vision became blurry. She rested her head against the steering wheel for a moment, and sighed deeply.
“Whoa.” Lexy said, obviously coming out of Joseph-land. “What’s wrong Cass?”
“Huh?” Cassie said sitting up. Her eyes were still blurry, and she rubbed them again.
“Nothing, my eyes are just bothering me. I shouldn’t have worn my contacts.”
They all nodded at her, and Cassie started her car.
She pulled away from the curb, and pressed the CD button on her radio, and drowned out the sound of her friends kissing with a mixed rock CD.
A couple minutes later they pulled up to the recording studio.
Cassie hit the power button on her radio, making Joe and Lexy jump from the sudden silence.
“Go get your brother.” Cassie said as she held her head, trying to get rid of the headache that she had.
“Why don’t you?” Joe said rudely.
Lexy had obviously realized that Cassie didn’t feel good, and whispered something to Joe, making him reluctantly get out of the car and go inside the recording studio.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Lexy asked as she leaned forward from the backseat.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m sure.” Cassie said flashing her a smile, and then looking out her window at Joe and Nick walking back to the car. .
Joe walked around the car and got in the back, and Nick just opened the door to the passenger’s side, and sat next to her.
“Hey Nick.” She said smiling. “Stop it.” She told herself, and made her sheepish smile wipe off her face.
A couple hours later, and a million wiffle ball games later, Cassie began to feel lightheaded again.
“Hey guys…I’m going to head home… I don’t feel that hot.”
They all laughed at her word usage, and then nodded.
“Will Kaytie or Kevin or someone take you home Lex?” Cassie asked her friend.
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t worry about me. Go home and get some sleep.”
Cassie smiled, and then looked at Joe.
“Bye!” She said as she walked over to Nick and gave him a hug.
“See ya later…” She said as she walked to her car.
Cassie drove home in silence, she was trying to hard on getting her eyes to focus on the road, her eyes were cloudy, and she could barely see anything. She was lightheaded and felt like death. She was grateful as she pulled into her driveway, and saw her mom there.
She walked inside her house, and it smelt like apple candles, which was explained as she walked into the living room and saw two candles burning.
“Mom! I’m home!”
Cassie walked into the kitchen and smiled weakly at her mom.
“Are you okay? You’re really pale?” Her mom rushed over and put her hand on her forehead. “Ohmigosh, you’re burning up.”
“I didn’t feel good, that’s why I came home. I’m just going to take some medicine and go to bed.”
Cassie walked over to the cupboard and grabbed three Advil, and swallowed them with a swig of water.
“Night honey…” Her mom said to her as she walked away to her bedroom.
“Night! Love you!” Cassie said as she shut her bedroom door. She walked into her bathroom and looked at herself, and began brushing her teeth. Her mom was right, she was really pale, more so than usual. She spit the toothpaste out of her mouth, and rinsed her mouth out with water. She grabbed her face wash from the shower, and began to wash her face. She bent down to rinse the soap off, and rubbed her face with the cold water, hoping that it would make her feel better. She stood back up, and felt that familiar lightheaded feeling this time, but worse. The room was spinning, and she was seeing four of her selves in the mirror. She leaned back, trying to find something to hold on to, but ended up falling to the floor.
“Cassie?!” She heard in the distance, a voice that sounded like her moms.
“Oh my god,” and everything was black.

Chapter *8*









Cassie lay in her bed, weak and tired. She had successfully avoided school for a week, due to her being in and out of the hospital for most of the week. She held her phone in her hand, and went through all of her missed calls. There were a few from Alexa, Bailiee, Vick and even some from Haley, Mackenzie’s friend, but there were a ton from Lexy, Joe Nick, Kaytie and Kevin. She had a ton of voicemails that she purposely didn’t listen to. She knew she was avoiding them, and she knew why, but she just couldn’t bring herself to talk to them, no matter how much she wanted to. She was afraid of her next doctor visit, and of what they may tell her.
Cassie rolled out of bed and went to look at herself. Her normally thick, shiny hair was now stringy and thin looking. She sighed as she rubbed her dark blue eyes. For the first time in her life she was truly afraid. She walked out of the bathroom and into the living room, sat down on the plush, leather couch, and sunk into the comfyness, cuddling a big blanket up around her face. She grabbed the remote and began flipping through channels on the TV. She stopped at a Full House rerun and watched, bored by the fact that there was nothing to watch during the day besides reruns and soap operas. Cassie began to nod off during the second commercial, but was jolted awake by a knock at the front door. She slowly stood up and the knocking increased, and became louder.
“Hold on!” Cassie said, her voice weak and fragile, just like the rest of her. She made it to the door, and looked out the peephole, she sighed deeply as she saw her friends outside. It was only 12:30, what were they doing home? Cassie looked down at herself, and frowned. She looked like crap. She had boxers on and a simple blue tank top. Cassie slowly unlocked the door, and opened it.
“It’s about ti-Whoa.” Joe was obviously surprised by her appearance.
“Hello to you too.” Cassie said forcing a smile upon her weak face. She opened the door wider, and allowed her friends to come inside. “What are you guys doing here?” She asked looking at each person. Lexy, Kaytie, Kevin, Nick and Joe were all giving her the same frightened look.
“You weren’t at school…” Lexy said quietly. “All week.”
“And we were worried.” Kaytie said finishing her sentence.
“Are you okay?” Nick asked, as he looked her up and down once more.
“Yeah. I’m fine.” She liked, and they all knew she lied.
“No you’re not! Look at yourself!” Lexy said, saying what everyone else was thinking.
“Shouldn’t you be in school?” Cassie said changing the subject, and looking at the clock.
“We skipped lunch to come make sure you were alright. Which, you obviously aren’t.” Joe said raising his voice towards the end of his sentence.
“Don’t come see me if you’re just going to yell at me!” Cassie said as she sat down on the couch, out of breath from yelling.
“You could have answered your phone or called one of us back, and we wouldn’t be!”
Just as Cassie was about ready to defend herself, she heard the back door open and close. Her mother walked into the living room, she looked around at all the kids, and then at Cassie, who looked weak and afraid.
“I think you guys should leave now.” Her mother said as she opened the front door and pointed out of it, motioning for them to leave.
“What? No!” Lexy said angrily.
“NOW!” Her mom said raising her voice loud enough to scare her friends. They all piled out of the house, each looking back at her before they left. The moment her mom locked the door, Cassie began bawling. Her mom walked over to her, and put her arm around her daughter, and made shushing noises into her ear as she cried.
“Mom, I can’t do this. I don’t want to go to the doctor tomorrow. I don’t want to even know.




Cassie lay in her bed, it was five o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, and she just didn’t know how she was going to tell everyone. She just needed to get out of this house, and have fun. Live her life. She walked into the bathroom, and looked at her still wet hair from the shower. She pulled out some of her mom’s makeup, which was slightly darker than hers, and applied it to her face, making her look less pale and weak. She pulled down her ponytail and straightened her hair. She smiled as she walked out into the kitchen where her mom was staying.
“Hey, I’m going to Lexy’s.” Cassie said smiling.
“To tell her…”
“Uh, yeah…I guess.”
“Good luck Hon.” Her mom said to her as she pulled her into a hug and kissed her forehead, her mom had obviously been crying all afternoon, and Cassie understood why, any normal person would, yet Cassie couldn’t seem to get tears to come out of her eyes, they just wouldn’t fall.

Cassie walked out of her house and decided to just walk to Lexy’s house, which was only two houses away, she cut through the yards, and made her way to Lexy’s front door. She rang the doorbell, not sure if anyone was home…and smiled as she saw Joe, Nick and Kevin answer the door.
“Why, hello.” Cassie said smiling.
They all gave her a stare, and Cassie realized why. “Listen guys, I’m sorry about yesterday. Really.”
They all smiled and all pulled her into a big hug.
“You don’t look sick anymore!” Joe said with joyness in his voice.
Cassie smiled, and thought to herself that she needs to use her mom’s makeup for the next four months.
Cassie walked into Lexy’s house and saw Lexy sitting down on the floor in the living room with Kaytie.
“What are we doing here?” Cassie said smiling, as she approached her friends.
“Chilling!” Kaytie answered loudly over the television.
Cassie laughed at her friends and joined them on the couch.
“We were actually about to go pick up Frankie from his friends.” Lexy said correcting Kaytie. “You want to just stay here?”
“Alone?!” Cassie said laughing at her loud response.
“I’ll stay with her...” Nick said raising his hand.
“On second though, I think I’ll just stay here...” Joe said laughing.
“Alright, Can we please go?” Kevin said tapping his foot impatiently.
Lexy gave Joe a quick kiss, and soon the two of them were alone.
“So…” Cassie said awkwardly as she stared at the TV.
“So… tell me the truth. You’re still sick aren’t you?”
Cassie looked oddly at Joe, and laughed. “No, I feel much better.”
“Yeah right. You’re being way un-Cassie like for you to be feeling better. Have you been to the doctor?”
“Yes. Yes, Joe I have.” Cassie said as she sat back in the couch frustrated. She didn’t want to lie, but she didn’t know how to say what she needed to say.
“And? What did they say?” Joe proceeded to ask her questions.
“Nothing…”
“Stop lying to me! You’re horrible at it.” He said raising his voice, Cassie was starting to get upset once again.
“I have CANCER Joe! Okay? Just stop talking about it!”
All of Joe's expression fell from his face, as he stared at her from across the couch, she regretted telling him. Him out of all people, she had meant to tell Lexy and Kaytie first, together.
“Stop joking.”
“I’m not.”

Chapter *9*








Cassie and Joe sat in silence for a moment, Cassie attempted to watch TV, but her mind was racing.
“Are you…going to be okay?” Joe asked, cutting through the silence.
Cassie sighed. “I don’t want to answer that question…” She said as she stared blankly at the TV. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Joe wiping at his eye. Was he crying?
“Just tell me you’ll be okay…” Joe repeated, obviously ignoring her last answer.
“I can’t Joe!” After Cassie finished her sentence the door opened, and in walked her friends.
“Where’s Frankie?” Cassie asked.
“We dropped him off at our house.” Kevin said as he twirled his car keys around his finger.
“Oh,” Cassie said glancing over at Joe and Lexy. They were cuddling together on the couch, but Cassie noticed Joe staring at her with sad eyes. She knew she had to tell everyone else, but she wasn’t sure how. She hadn’t intended to tell Joe first, but it just happened. She looked over at Nick who was sitting next to her, with his arm half around her. He really couldn’t take a hint, but it felt nice to be held, especially today, with how scared she was. She leaned back in his arms and smiled up at him. She knew she was leading him on, but she couldn’t seem to stop herself today.
“Your skin is really hot. Are you sure you’re not stick still?” Nick asked as he felt her forehead, checking for a fever.
“No… I’m just…hot.” Cassie said, noticing Joe staring at her. “Actually, Lexy, Kaytie… can I talk to you outside?” Cassie asked as she made her way to the door, she knew what she had to do… but she didn’t want to. As Lexy and Kaytie followed, they both gave her a weird look.
“What’s up?” Kaytie said as they got outside. Cassie shut the front door, and then sat on the steps and looked at them unsure of how to start.
“Well, I’m not exactly sure how to say this, but I…I…I…” She said stuttering over her words.
“Like Nick?” Kaytie said laughing.
“No! Just friends, for like the millionth time!”
“Well, what then?” Lexy said obviously getting impatient.
“I have…”
“Have what?” Kaytie said raising her voice.
“Cancer.” Cassie said softly.
“What?!” Lexy said loudly.
“You’re kidding. Don’t joke around like that!”
“I’m not…and…” She braced herself for the next part. “The doctor doesn’t think I’m going to live any longer than four months, because we caught it so late.” Cassie really didn’t feel like going into detail, and she wasn’t going to.
Cassie watched as her two friends exchanged glances.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Kaytie said as a tear swelled up in the corner of her eye.
“Unfortunately.” Somehow, Cassie couldn’t let it sink in as much as everyone else was, she wouldn’t allow herself to cry.
They both rushed forward and hugged her tightly. As they pulled away, Cassie shivered.
“Can we go inside? It’s getting chilly.”
“Yeah! Of course!” Lexy said as she opened the front door, causing three guys to fall forward onto the ground in front of them.
“You were listening weren’t you?” Kaytie asked as she helped each of them up.
“No.”
“What are you talking about?”
“We’d never do that.”
Though, Cassie knew they had been by the look of sadness on Kevin and Nick’s face. It must have already sunken into Joe, though you could tell he was still sad.
“Yeah, right.” Lexy said rolling her eyes.
“Cass….” Nick started.
“Can I go inside? I’m freezing.” She said looking down at her hands, which were starting to turn purple.
“It’s like fifty degrees out, Cass.” Kevin said as he looked at her oddly.
“You guys were listening in on our conversation. Put two and two together.” Cassie said as she pushed past the three guys and walked into Lexy’s slightly warmer house.
“Can we talk?” Nick said as he followed her into the living room.
Cassie sighed. “About what?”
“What do you think?”
“Figures.” Cassie mumbled quietly. “What about it?”
“Are you going to be okay?”
Cassie looked at Nick blankly, why did everyone ask her this.
“I don’t know Nick. I really don’t know.” She said being slightly harsh, even though she didn’t mean to be.
“Listen, I know what you’re going through…I went through it with my diabetes.”
Cassie sighed. “Listen, Nick… I know you’re just trying to help, but I really just don’t want to talk about it.”
“Cass, you can’t just ignore it.” Joe said, speaking for the first time since everyone had came back.
“I can. I will. If they think I’ve only got a certain amount of time left well, then…I’ll just live my life out.”
“Cass….” Lexy said as she sat next to her. “I know this is hard, but you’ve got to take it easy, get as much treatment as you can, and try to fight it. With the attitude you have, you’ll let it win.”
“Its not a person Lexy.”
“Ugh…”
“And, anyways…I don’t want to loose my hair, and in my last waking moments be bald. How much would that suck?” Cassie said laughing.
No one laughed with her.

Chapter *10*
[finally]






Sunday morning came faster than expected. She had just decided to stay at Lexy’s house with the rest of her friends. All night she kept getting questions, many about all of her recent doctor visits, and the tests they did on her.
“And then they took this huge,” Cassie said holding her hands up, indicating how huge, “needle, and shoved it in my bone, to get to my bone marrow.” It had been the most painful test she had endured yet, but it seemed as if Cassie entertained everyone with her stories. Eventually Cassie became tired, and fell asleep before everyone else.


Nick’s Point of View


“I’m going to lay down guys, I’m tired.” Cassie said as she began curling up on the couch, and shut her blue eyes.
Everyone was quiet for about thirty minutes while Cassie dozed off into a deep sleep, everyone knew that once Cassie was asleep, there was no way to pull her out of it. Nick caught himself looking over at her every couple seconds. He sighed deeply, as he knew he never had a shot with her. They were just friends, and that was all they’d ever be, but while she lay there asleep, he couldn’t help but fantasize. Her golden blonde hair lay perfectly flat across her face, perfectly messy, if that’s possible. Though her skin was pale, and fragile looking, since her makeup had worn off through out the day, Nick could still see joy and happiness deep in her face.
He broke his gaze from her and looked over at Joe, his eyes were red and puffy, and Nick realized he had been crying, though no one else took notice, not even his girlfriend. Nick followed Joe’s dreamy eyesight, assuming that he was staring at Lexy, who was sitting next to the sleeping Cassie, but Lexy was gone. Nick looked back at Joe, and at the next room over, where Lexy stood picking up her house before he parents got back, tomorrow. Nick returned his attention back to his seemingly love sick brother. He noticed the way his eyes sparkled with interest, even behind the red puffiness from crying. Nick looked at the peacefully sleeping Cassie, and back at Joe, and put the pieces together. Nick wasn’t sure what to make of the situation. He tried to convince himself that Joe was just worried about her, that he cared…the way a brother should, but he knew that look after many years, and many girlfriends that Joe had.
“What’s your problem?” Nick jumped, and snapped out of his thoughts.
“Wha?” He said as he realized that Kevin was talking to both him and Joe.
“Both of you guys are completely spaced out,” Kevin said answering Nick’s half question. Nick looked over at Joe, hoping that he was going to answer first, but he didn’t.
“I was just thinking about Cass,” Nick replied, half truthfully. After Nick answered, he looked over at Joe, waiting for his answer.
“Yeah, I’m just worried about her, is all,” Joe answered.
For almost the first time in his life he wanted to jump across the room, and strangle his brother.
“She’ll be fine. She’s strong,” Lexy said as she walked over and kissed Joe softly on the lips, and then sat on his lap, cuddling with him.
Nick just kept his mouth shut. There was so much confusion in his brain at that moment that he couldn’t handle it. He didn’t even know where to start. He turned to Kaytie and Kevin, who seemed completely head over heels for each other. Nick couldn’t help but be envious. He wished he could get up, walk over to the couch and put his arm around Cassie and brush her hair out of her face softly, but he knew better than that. He knew that she saw them as just friends, and he didn’t want to loose that. It usually wasn’t hard to contain his feelings, but every time her skin made contact with his, he couldn’t help but melt. Like earlier when he had put his arm sort of around her, and she leaned back into his arms. He felt his muscles tighten, and he became nervous. He wasn’t usually the most outgoing guy around girls, but he was never this shy.
Joe didn’t realize how luckt he was to have a girlfriend like Lexy, who understood the whole fame thing. Though, if Joe liked Cassie…
Nick cut off his thoughts as everyone stood up, except the sleeping Cassie.
“What’s going on?” Nick asked confused.
“We don’t want to wake up Cass, so we’re going upstairs,” Joe said answering his question, and Nick followed the entire group up the stairs, but not without taking one more glance at Cassie.


[Main POV (Cassie’s)]

Cassie woke up and looked around the room, aware that it was early morning. She looked around, expecting Lexy and Kaytie to be curled up in the floor. She sighed as she realized she was all alone, and threw the blankets off of her. She stretched her arms above her head, and her feet off the couch. She figured that everyone was upstairs, and slowly put her feet on the cold, hard wooden floor, and made her way up the stairs. She walked down the narrow hallway, and slowly opened the second door on the left, knowing that it was Lexy and her sister Emily’s room. She quietly walked into the silent room, causing the floor to creak as she did so. Though, as she walked in she realized the room wasn’t silent, and that Joe’s snoring was extremely loud. She peered around in each bed, realizing that Kaytie and Kevin shared Emily’s and Joe and Lexy shared Lexy’s bed. This left Nick on the hard floor all by himself. She couldn’t help but be drawn to him while he was asleep. She knelt down next to him and ran her fingers slowly through his curly hair. She couldn’t help herself, but decided to stop. If Lexy or Kaytie woke up, they’d never let her live it down.
“What are you up?” Cassie stood up, with a beating heart, to see Joe sitting up, half smiling at her. His hair was a mess, and his eyes screamed with tiredness. Cassie just smiled.
“I went to bed early, so I guess I just woke up,” Joe pulled off the blankets that were covering him up, and stood up stretching.
“What are you doing?” She asked emphasizing “you”.
“Its like seven A.M.” She said while looking at the clock. “Get back in bed.”
Joe laughed and looked down at Nick.
“I can’t just let you be awake all by yourself, now could I?”
Cassie laughed and shrugged. “Actually, you could, but I’d be awfully lonely.” Cassie said keeping her voice low so they didn’t wake anyone up. Joe laughed as he walked out of Lexy’s room and headed straight for the kitchen.
Cassie walked over to the counter, and sat down on the door that was by it.
“Want anything to eat?” Joe asked her as he fixed himself a pot of coffee.
“You cook?” Cassie said jokingly.
“I can make a mean bowl of cereal?” Joe laughed at his own corny joke and pulled two bowls out of the cupboard.
“Well then, in that case…I’d like a bowl of Rise Krispies please.” She smiled as she saw him grab two boxes from the cabinet. One Rice Krispies, and one Trix, which she assumed was for him. He poured hers firs and filled the bowl up with milk, and then handed her the bowl with a spoon stuck into it.
“Why, thank you.” She said as she put a spoonful into her mouth, she couldn’t help but notice how much of a gentleman he was.
Joe just smiled as he sat down with his bowl next to her.
“Joe,” She said breaking the silence, “can I ask you a question?”
Joe nodded as he put another spoonful of cereal into his mouth.
“How do you think I handle this whole Nick thing?”
Joe swallowed his food before answering.
“Well, you’re leading him on, that’s for sure.”
Cassie sighed and nodded.
“I know, I don’t mean to though. It just happened…” She took a slight pause and then continued talked.
“Do you think I should give him a chance? As in…more than a friend?”
Joe choked on his cereal, and Cassie laughed.
“No!” He said after he was done coughing.
“What? I thought…” Cassie was confused now. “You’re his brother, aren’t you supposed to tell me yes, to make him happy?”
“No.”
“What?”
“Listen, I just think you can do better…”
“What are you talking about Joe?” Cassie was lost.
“Just-“
Joe was cut off by another voice. Cassie turned her head to see Nick standing in the doorway.
“What he means is that that he likes you too.” Nick said as he glared at his brother.
Cassie looked from Nick, to Joe, and back to Nick again.
“What?” She looked back at Joe. “What’s he talking about?”
“I have no idea…” Joe said as he stared at his little brother, not taking his eyes off of him.
“Don’t try to deny it Joe. I saw you last night, staring at her.”
They were both starting to raise her voice, and Cassie was freaking out. Her doctor had told her to stay calm, and relaxed at all times. She wished she would have told them this, because now she regretted it as she fell to the floor once more, her world turning black in perpetual sleep.

Chapter *11* [11?]








Cassie awoke, but she couldn’t see anything. She heard beeping and lots of talking in the background. She wanted to open her eyes, but she couldn’t muster the strength to do so.
She felt like she was dreaming, like everything was so distant, yet so close. She focused on the voices, trying to find voices she remembered. She smiled, or thought that she smiled, as she heard the three brothers smooth voices. She slowly, once more tried to open her eyes, and with success this time. She looked around the oddly blank hospital room, and then recalled what happened. She banged her arm against the side of her bed, to let everyone know that she was awake, she couldn’t seem to pull herself up, or she feared her arms might snap in half. She smiled as she saw five heads crowd around her. Though, there was someone missing. She looked around the group.
“Where’s Lexy?” Cassie asked as she smiled at each of her friends, and mom that stood around her.
“She’s…kind of mad,” Kevin said answering for everyone, Cassie noticed Joe let his head slump forward, and she remembered what all happened.
“That wasn’t a dream then? With the breakfast? And…..” She let her voice fade off, knowing that she’d gotten her point across; they all nodded.
“Can I talk to someone alone?” Cassie said not sure whom she wanted to talk to first.
Everyone started to pour out of the room, when all that was Joe and Nick.
“Can I talk to Nick, Joe?” Cassie asked, the moment the words escaped from her lips, Joe began walking out the door.
Cassie tried to pull herself up once more, but failed weakly. She knew what she must look like. She could feel the paleness in her face, the lack of blood in her face to give her that usual red-tint. She looked up at Nick, whose face was obviously confused on what to say. The unusually shy brother would be hard to talk to, that’s why she wanted to talk to him first, to just get it over with.
“Nick….” She started to talk, but he hushed her, with a soft voice that she’d never heard him use before. She was taken back by it, and then waited for him to talk.
“I don’t want to put you through anything else, not right now anyways. I know we’re just friends, and that’s fine for right now, okay?” Nick said as he brushed a strand of hair out of Cassie’s face that had fallen as he talked to her.
“Nick….”
He shushed her once more. “I’m serious. This is no place to talk about this, we can talk later,”
“What about Lexy? Does she hate me?”
“She’s pretty mad at Joe, but I doubt she’s mad at you.”
Cassie groaned, and finally pulled her self up, and sat upright in the lumpy hospital bed. “What am I going to do about your brother Nick?”
“You don’t like him?”
“What? He’s dating my best friend. That’s against all girl rules,”
Nick laughed sheepishly and smiled, a wide smile that she rarely saw out of him.
“Let me talk to him…and, thanks Nick. Thanks for being so…calm about all of this,”
Nick smiled as he bent down and kissed her cheek. Cassie felt some heat rush to her face, but it quickly went away as she felt weak again.
Nick walked out of the swinging doors, and Cassie watched as it swung back and forth two times before Joe walked in.
“Hey loser.” Cassie said, smiling as much as she could, trying to break the tension.
He smiled at her with a half smile, and walked to the side of her bed, and put his hands, which were interlaced, on the rail.
“What’s going on?” Cassie knew she didn’t have to say anything else for him to know that she didn’t just mean in general. She wanted to know what was going through his head this whole time.
“I don’t know!” He groaned, Cassie could tell he was obviously frustrated by everything. He closed his eyes, and pulled his hands apart, and pinched the bridge of his nose, as if when he opened it, everything would be back to normal.
“I can’t like you Joe, you know nothing can happen between us,”
“Why?”
Cassie sighed deeply. “Isn’t it obvious? I mean you’re dating my best friend. She would never want to talk to me again, let alone talk to you again.
“I don’t like her the way I like you though.”
Cassie didn’t realize it was going to be this complicated. She watched as Joe attempted to blow a piece of hair from his face, as a distraction to their conversation.
“Joe, if you don’t like her…. fine, but nothing will ever happen between us,” She said unusually harsh. She regretted saying it, the second she even thought it.
“Cassie, I’m not going to give up.”
Cassie was momentarily confused, but was brought out of confusion as she felt his warm lips touch hers. She pulled away quickly.
“Joe!”
He looked down at the ground, and then without another word began walking to the door.
Cassie looked at the door, wishing that she could get out of there faster than he could, then she realized someone standing at the door.
“Hi kiddo.” She heard the deep voice said, his voice wasn’t smooth, and it wasn’t the one she wanted to hear.
“Joe!” She called after him, but he obviously didn’t want to turn around, she just didn’t want to be alone with him.
“Hi dad…” She said as she fell back in her bed sighing deeply.
Where was her mom at?
