I ran fast down the dark, paved alley. Edward said not to look back. It was getting worse. I couldn’t breathe anymore. The air escaped in wheezed puffs from my mouth as I ran, and I couldn’t help but to think, to wonder.

Why was Edward fighting the werewolves? What had happened? I had just been walking in the mall with Edward, picking things out for our wedding when they had attacked. We were mostly just picking out things for the proper family, though we would never need them. The china, the kitchen supplies, the house necessities, all props and just part of the act. We were anything but normal. I was marrying into a family of vegetarian vampires, and I was to become one within the next two months, soon following our wedding.

I stopped in the doorway of a small store and stepped inside. The light flooded over the small glass cabinets and shelves, and the warmth welcomed and encircled me.

“May I help you, miss?” said a small voice behind me.

I jumped. This had scared me; the store looked empty from the window.

I turned to face a short, plump woman in an apron. Her face looked kind, and her eyes were big and a very deep shade of green.

“Um,” I said thinking fast, “Could I use your bathroom?”

“Yes, but please be quick, I need to lock up.” She showed her keys and pointed to a door at the far end of the store. “Just through there.”

“Thanks.” I walked straight ahead and through the door. I felt the wall for a light switch and flipped it on. The door locked as I shut it and I looked around the small room. No windows. That was good. There was no way for Jacob or his friends to come and find me, for them to come and take me away from Edward.

I slid down the wall to the floor and pulled my knees to my chin. The floor was cold and hard, but it reminded me of Edward. I sat there and just thought. What was Jacob doing? Why was he doing this? Scratch that. I know exactly why he was doing it.

He was mad at Edward. Mad at Edward for not leaving me alone, mad that Edward just wouldn’t leave and never come back. He wanted Edward to hurt me so he could pick up my broken pieces.

Well, too bad for Jacob, I didn’t want him anymore. If Jacob was going to hurt someone for loving me, then I didn’t want him anymore. I felt my love for him shrinking and shriveling up inside me as the minutes passed.

I sat for a few minutes, emptying my mind. I traced patterns on the tile floor with my finger, but they always turned into something that reminded me of Edward or Jacob. The Edward ones made my eyes fill with tears, and the Jacob ones made me angry. I couldn’t stand him anymore! This was the Jacob that I hated. The Jacob that bugged the crap out of me. It was the Jacob that would probably end up killing my one and only love, and then probably his family. All over me. I am a stupid little human that isn’t even worth my own weight in anything. Useless, weak, slow, and clumsy as I was, I had to do something. I had to see what I could do, I had to think.
