“Get over it princess, you’re going. We’re all packed and the moving van’s here. Unless, of

When I woke up on the morning of July 22, I was greeted by two things. The first was the sound of one of my
mother’s favorite boy groups. The other was the smell of pancakes.

Now, the strange thing about pancakes in my family is that they don’t mean your mother is being nice and
making you a hearty breakfast. Oh no, in fact, it’s the opposite.

For the past fourteen and a half years of my life, pancakes have meant bad news. Usually, it was that my
mom was getting yet another divorce. But that can’t happen this time, I thought to myself. She and Fred got
married just last week. That could only mean one thing: we were moving.

You’d think I’d be used to it. Breaking the record at having been to thirty something schools throughout my
life. Of course my big mouth couldn’t be any help, but neither could my mother’s tendency to abandon things
right when they don’t start to go her way. It’s a miracle I’m still living with her at all.

“Licorice! C’mon downstairs! I made your favorite, pineapple pancakes!” I heard my mom bellow, in her
typical loud voice.

Yes, my name is Licorice. And yes, I love pineapple pancakes.

“Ugh. Coming mom!”

I quickly threw on some clothes (seeing as no one wants to greet their step-dad, step-bro, and mom in their
skimpy summer pajayjays) and trampled downstairs.

“Must you always sound like a herd of elephants is chasing after you?” my step-bro, Jason, asked.

“Must you always look like a herd of elephants ran over you?” I shot back.

“Be nice, be nice, Lick,” my mom said, using the embarrassing nickname she gave me at age seven.

I made a face at Jason behind her back, and ate my breakfast. “So what’s with the pancakes?” I asked my
mother, with my mouth full.

“Dude, chew, and swallow,” Jason said slowly, like I was just learning English.

“Can’t a mother make a nice breakfast for her family once in a while?” my mother asked innocently.

“No,” Jason and I chorused.

“Alright, you caught me. We’re moving.”

“WHAT?!” I exclaimed, even though I fully knew it was coming.

“Flight Q27 to Los Angeles, now boarding in gate seven,” the intercom blasted overhead.
But I couldn’t hear it. For all of my pouting and whining about moving, I was excited. It was
my first time being out of a small town in New England.

“Come on, let’s GO,” I said, frustrated at my family for not keeping up.

My mother and Fred laughed, their laughter booming off the walls, causing people to stop
and look at us oddly.

“Must you guys be so loud, 24/7?!” I exclaimed, throwing my hands in the air.

“Hey, Brenda! Aren’t those guys over there one of the bands you like?” Jason asked my
mom, pointing to where three guys were standing.

“HOLY SNAPS! IT’S THE JONAS BROTHERS!” she yelled, jumping up and down like a
little girl who had to pee her pants.

I quietly withdrew my iPod from my bag, knowing this could take hours. For example, one
time my mom saw Justin Timberlake on a trip to NYC. He was there for two hours, and was
only saved because he had to go to the bathroom.

And I was correct. Soon she was skipping giddily over to them, pulling her ever-present
camera phone out of her purse. The boys looked over, saw my thirty-five year old mother,
and looked surprised. I saw glance over at me, and then they seemed to understand.
I knew what they were thinking. That I was the fan. That I was the one who was obsessed.
Oh boy, were they wrong.

“Hey, you want an autograph or what?” what looked like the oldest one asked politely.

I snorted, pointed to my mom, and went back to playing solitaire on my iPod.

“Dude, I think her older sister wants one,” the youngest one whispered, but unfortunately
for them, she heard. My mom gasped in an “oh-you’re-so-funny” way, and said, “Oh
you’re too sweet Nick! I’m her mom, and I’d like an autograph and a couple of pictures if
you don’t mind. You can make that out to Brenda. B-R-E-N-D-A.”

“I’m sorry,” ‘Nick’ said. “We’re just about to get on our plane.” He pointed up, and I noticed
that we were at gate seven. Uh oh, I thought.

“Flight Q27?” Jason mumbled.

“Yea, you guys too?” the middle-ish one said. I could tell he though this was a bad idea. I
didn’t blame him, my mom was buzzing around snapping pictures and making sure they
spelled her name right.

“So what’s your name?” a boy sitting across my aisle asked me. He was butt ugly, if not
uglier. Not that I’m a shallow person or anything, but a girl’s gotta have standards, right?

“Don’t talk to me,” I responded, tying my long black hair into a ponytail.

He called me a few words that I would get grounded for repeating, and got up. And, for
some reason, he screamed. “DAAAAD! SOME LADY CALLED ME STUPID!”

What a loser, I thought to myself. He’s getting his daddy to save him.

I went back to my book (The Outsiders, what a classic), satisfied that UglyBoy would leave
me alone. But right when Ponyboy and Johnny ran into the fire, a HUGE military guy came
up to me and grabbed me by the ear.

“Ow! What are you doing?” I managed to squeak out.

“You. Mean. To. Son,” the MilitaryGuy grunted, like a caveman.

“What’re you talking about? He was rude to me first!” I lied, managing to yank free.

“Yea, buddy. He’s just as guilty as she is,” I heard a voice behind me say. I
wheeled around, surprised someone (or, someones) was watching. For there was a mob
behind me, including UglyBoy, my family, and the band we saw earlier in the airport. It
seemed like the youngest one in the band had spoken, for he had stepped forward, away
from the mob. For a split second, I noticed how perfect his biceps were. Not too big, but they
were definitely there. I quickly dismissed it from my mind.

“Yuh. Calm. You,” the middle-ish brother grunted like the MilitaryGuy. My mom and
Fred tittered, and MilitaryGuy lunged at the one mocked him.

“Leave ‘em dad. They aren’t worth it,” UglyBoy said, blocking his dad from lunging
at the (what seemed to be) eighteen-year old boy.

“Excuse me,” the always-cheerful flight attendant said. “What are your names and
seat numbers? You aren’t in any trouble, its just standard inventory.” No one bought it,
because we all knew she had our names before the “fiasco”. But we answered her all the
same.

“Brenda Carlson, 24B,” my mother said.

“Fred Carlson, 24C,” Fred said.

“Jason Carlson, 24A,” Jason mumbled.

“Licorice Rogers, 25A,” I said, and got a strange look from the band, and from the
flight attendant who was writing this all down.

“Norman Bates, 37C,” UglyBoy said.

“Bill Bates, 37B,” MilitaryGuy said. I caught the middle-ish band guy’s eye, and we
both giggled, before I realized what I was doing and scowled.

“Nick Jonas, 26A,” the youngest band guy said.

“Joe Jonas, 26B,” the middle-ish band guy said.

“And I’m Kevin Jonas, 26C,” the oldest band guy finished.

“Could you all please return to your seats, we’re experiencing some technical
difficulties and will be landing in Denver, Colorado. Thank you,” the pilot came out to tell us.

“Crap,” I muttered. Then I saw three sets of eyes peek out behind my seat.

“What’s wrong?” the second pair of eyes asked. I leaned up to figure out who they
were. It was The Band; Nick, Joe, and Kevin. In that order.

I growled at them to go away, and they did. Except Joe growled back and winked
before he disappeared.

"Macho Man" comes on the radio?

It was in the local grocery store. I needed some "Feminine Products", and my mother
needed some cigarettes. I didn't want for her to come, naturally, but I did want the
company, and it was the only way that Jason would page us.

Anyway, they were playing a seventies marathon, when "Macho Man" started. Way back
when I actually had friends, we had made up a super embarrassing dance to the song.

Right when I was getting to the grand finale, there was a spill in Aisle Four; the baby aisle.
White powder + white floor = deadly combination, if you're doing a headstand.

I did a faceplant. And instead of saying, "Oh honey, are you okay? In fact I think I will take
you to the hospital right away, and then we will never move again!" my mom just started
laughing her patootie off.

"I'm fine. Don't worry about asking!" I muttered.

"Oh, sweetie. I'm sorry. Well, we should probably get going. The plane might be fixed by
now, " my mom said wiping her eyes.

The plane left without us. Jason hadn't paged us. We were stuck in Denver.

"What'll we do now?" I said, wringing my hands out of nervousness.

"I guess the only thing we can do is book the next flight," my mom said; always calm when she should be
freaking out.

We walked up to the guy at the desk, "When's the next flight to Los Angeles?"

The twitchy young man typed some things into his computer and said, "Uhm, tomorrow at eight PM."

"Guess we're gonna stay at a motel, " my mom mumbled.

"You can stay with us, if you want," I heard a familiar voice say from behind us. When my mom let out a tiny
gasp, I knew I was right. It was one of the Jonases.

"So you guys missed the plane also?" I asked coldly.

"Yep. And we're about to book a room. We can split the cost and share it, if you like," Kevin offered.

"Well how could we pass up an offer like that? Of course we would love to share a room with you!" my mom
exclaimed, automatically accepting for both of us.

"Wait a minute. Mom can I talk to you?" I asked, already frustrated at not getting a say in this.

When we were successfully out of earshot, I angrily whispered to her, "Mom. You ALWAYS do this. Why
don't you EVER ask my opinion in what I want to do? What if I don't WANT to stay with them? You know
they're just trying to rip you off."

"Well, I suppose we could get another room for ourselves, if you feel this strongly about it," she replied
meekly.

"That's great becau-" I started, grinning with glee already.

"One condition," my mom said, holding her finger up. My GleeGrin instantly faded. 'One Conditions' were
never good. They were ALWAYS worse than what the original option was. "The difference that we would've
paid would have to come out of your own money."

Because I only had three dollars in my wallet, I fake-smiled and exclaimed, "Jonas it is!"

I've changed a little bit of the stuff but its close to what she had

and the snazzy stuff she does will have to come later.

Staying with celebrities definitely had its good qualities. And its bad.

It started right when we stepped out of the airport. Millions, or what seemed to be, of girls (and a couple of
guys) started screaming, and ran over (not unlike how my own mother did) with pens/paper and disposable
cameras, obviously supposed to be for vacation pictures.

If my own mom was anything to go by, we were going to be there for a while. I tried to stay near mom and
the band for as long as possible, but I soon got pushed out by the wild beasts of JonasLand.

As I looked around, surveying my environment, I noticed a girl, with headphones in her ears, waiting
patiently near a pole. I walked over to her, hoping for a little bit of company until the mob died down.

"What are you listening to?" I asked her shyly.

She paused whatever she was listening to, and asked back, "What?"

"Oh, uhm. What are you listening to?" I repeated.

She glanced at the screen, and answered, "Magic, by Ben Kweller."

"He's awesome! I've got a couple of his songs on my iPod, too."

"REALLY?" she screeched, her eyebrows shooting up into her hair. "I barely ever meet anyone who likes
him. I'm Liz."

"Licorice."

"Wow what a cool name."

"Thanks," I grinned. No one has ever said that to me before.

If someone asked me for one good thing about staying with "celebrities" it would have to be the hotel rooms.
They managed to get us a five-star room for only a three-star price. Which means that when we split the
cost, we paid like we would've for a one-star room.

And boy, it was HUGE. The bathroom ALONE was the size of my bedroom at our last house.

But there was a downside, however. There weren't enough beds. Even with the two beds, cot, and pull-out
couch, one of us was going to have to sleep on the floor. I had a feeling it was going to be me, and I could
NOT let that happen.

"I will never, in a million years, sleep on the floor," I cried dramatically.

"Of course you are sweetie. You know how bad my back is. And we're not going to let the boys do it!" My
mom said, like it was no big deal.

"But -" I started to protest against the unfairness.

"No buts," she said, holding her hand up like a crossing guard. That's when I knew there was no use
arguing.

"Its fine, Mrs. Carlson," Kevin said. He seemed like the only one of the Jonases that was half decent. "I'll take
the floor, so -uhm Licorice- doesn't have to."

"No," I glared. "I'll do it"

i hate this part
so i'm posting the rest of this then kind of starting fresh
(jenny you're in this part! since you asked haha)

Somehow I woke up. In the bathtub. With no socks on. And someone was snapping directly in front of my face.

"Yo, Princess," the person who was snapping whispered at me. I blinked a few times, realizing that it was Joe.

"Wha-?" I started, but he instantly put his hand over my mouth.

I hate it when people do that, so, naturally, I licked his hand.

I tried again, "What do you want?"

"Wanna help me pull a prank on Nick?"

I leaped up and whisper-yelled, "What're you waiting for pretty boy?! Grab me some socks and let's go!"

"Dude! Where're my pants?" I heard Nick yell from the "living room". Joe and I giggled, and Kevin gave us a
suspicious look.

"What did you do, Joe?" he asked.

"Hey, it was her idea, not mine!" Joe explained, pointing at me.

"Oh yea. And how exactly did I end up in the bathtub with no socks on? By the way, that is a very strange
thing to do," I pointed out, raising my eyebrows.

"Uhm..." Kevin said, even though I was talking to Joe. "Nick did it!"

"I did what?" Nick said, walking into the room wearing sweatpants and a loose t-shirt.

"Randomly put me in the bathtub with no socks on," I informed him.

"Well..." he blushed. "We all did it."

"WHAT THE DAVID?!" I exclaimed. "My god! You guys really are wackos! MOM! I'm gonna go grab some
breakfast!"

And with that, I grabbed my keycard and iPod. Only when I was in the elevator did I realize that I was still
wearing my pajayjays.

"Pants," I muttered, smacking my thigh.

"What did you say?" I heard a voice behind me say. But not unkindly. I looked around, and sure enough,
there was a girl around my age standing behind me.

She was wearing pajamas also.

"Oh. Um, pants. Its what I use instead of darn or crap."

"That's such a cool expression," the girl said, amused. "Mind if I use it sometime?"

"Not if you eat breakfast with me," I said, deciding to be forward for once.

"It's a date. I'm Jenny, by the way," she stuck her hand out, and I shook it.

I had a feeling we would become great friends.

"Man, I thought she was comin' 'round," I heard Joe say from the "bedroom". I was on the couch, "napping"
before the flight to LA, which I knew I would never sleep on.

"And you just had to put her in the bathtub, didn't you, Joe?" I heard Kevin counter.

"Its kind of weird, though. I mean, most girls always scream around us. And she...doesn't. As much as I don't
like the screaming, I don't like the hatred either," Nick jumped in.

"Guys I think she's waking up," Joe said obviously nervous. But he was wrong. I was just drifting off....

Now, I bet you're thinking that somehow I came around. That I learned to like them, and we all became great
friends.

No luck, man.

I hated them until we got to LA, and then I never saw them again.
