Hello!! Here is my easy gimp tutoral for making a simple avvie with one pic, and then with affects!!
1. So, when you open up the gimp file, it comes up with the basic page. if you look at the left hand side of your screen and then underneath file, you will see a big long row of mini pictures. The one nearest to the end is the square. Then you need to go along to the one that looks like a little rope. You need to click on that icon.
2. Then you need to go up to file, click on it and then go down to New. If you click on that, a little gray/ light brown box will come up. There is three white spaces to put something. The little white box that says Template beside it, you need to just leave that bit blank. Then, underneath that there is a title which says Image size. There is 2 little boxes under it. In the first box, you type 100 and in the one underneath it, you also type 100. In other ways, 100x100. It has to be set to pixels. You will see that little box beside the box that says Height.
3. Then, you click on OK and then it takes you to a little white square. On the border of that squar, there is File, Edit, Select, View, ect. You need to click on the first one that says file and then you go down to open. Then it will come up with a box that has all of pictures. Once you have found the picture that you want to use, you either double click on it or you click on it once and then click on open in the right hand corner.
4. Once the picture has came up, you need to hold down The botton on the keyboard that says Ctrl and at the same time, hold down C. Then you click back onto your blank square and then you again hold down Ctrl and also at the same time, hold down V.
Then you should end up with something like this: http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q191/2007_Cowgirl/jkjkld.jpg
5. To get the colour to turn brighter, you go along to filters and then you go down to colours and then go down to filter pack. You then click on the little box beside the words Saturation and then you click on more sat.
And then it should look like this: http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q191/2007_Cowgirl/uouie.jpg
6. To get a little light in the corner, go along to filters and then go along to light effects and then click on GFlare. Then click on the words that say Bright_Star and then you can move it to wherever you want it to be and then you need to go up to the top of that box and then click on the bit that says Settings and then on the place where it says Radius, you can choose how big/ small you want it. The rest, you can just leave. And then it should look something like this: http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q191/2007_Cowgirl/iidejnjkredfdgv.jpg
If you would like to know how to do anything else, please post questions here!!
